To duet on TikTok, tap the Share button on the side of the video, then tap Duet at the bottom (you may need to swipe to find it). Record your side, tap the Continue tick, edit, then post or save it to drafts. If Duet isn't there, the creator has switched it off or their account isn't public.
A Duet puts your video side by side with someone else's, and TikTok plays both at the same time in a split screen. It's the format behind reaction videos, harmonies, cook-alongs and the business favourite: replying to a question video with your expert answer right next to it.
Here are TikTok's own steps, the settings that decide whether you can duet a video, and what happens to the Duet once it's posted.
How to duet a video, step by step
TikTok's help centre lays it out like this:
- In the TikTok app, tap the Share button on the side of the video you'd like to Duet.
- Tap Duet at the bottom. You may need to swipe along the row to find it.
- Add effects, filters or other camera tools if you want them.
- Tap the Record button to start and stop recording, then tap the Continue tick.
- Add a filter, voice effect, text, stickers or use the advanced editing tools.
- Tap Your Story to post it to your Story, or Next to add a description, hashtags, tags, a location, a link and privacy settings.
- Tap Post to publish, or Drafts to save it for later.
Drafts are visible only to you on your profile, so if you're not sure about the take, save it and come back. Before you record, check how long a TikTok video can be so your half doesn't run past what you meant to say.
Why you can't duet some videos
TikTok is upfront that not all videos have Duet turned on. There are two reasons you'll see no Duet button:
- The creator turned it off. Creators can switch Duet off for individual posts or for who can Duet with them in their privacy settings.
- The account isn't public. TikTok says you must have a public account to allow others to Duet with your videos, so private accounts can't be dueted at all.
- It's limited to friends. If the creator picked Friends, only people they follow who follow them back can Duet.
If you're under 18, TikTok points you to its separate teen privacy and safety settings, which change the Duet defaults. There's no workaround for any of these, and that's deliberate: it's the creator's call.
Control who can duet with your videos
TikTok gives you two levels of control:
| Setting | Who can Duet your videos |
|---|---|
| Everyone | Anyone, as long as Duet is turned on for the video |
| Friends | Only people you follow who follow you back |
| Off for one post | Nobody can Duet that video |
You can also remove Duet posts already associated with your content, so if someone uses your video in a way you don't like, you aren't stuck with it. If a Duet breaks TikTok's Community Guidelines or your privacy rights, TikTok says you can report it.
What happens after you post a Duet
This is the bit people misunderstand, and TikTok's help page is clear on it:
- The Duet appears only on the profile of the person who recorded it. The original video stays only on the original creator's profile.
- The privacy settings of the person who recorded the Duet decide who can watch, comment on, download or interact with it.
- The original creator can delete Duet videos associated with their post.
So a Duet is your post, judged by your audience, but it lives at the original creator's discretion. Build it around something you'd be happy for them to see.
Duet ideas that work for a small business
The format rewards a clear reason to sit beside the original. A few that suit business accounts:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Answer the question: someone asks how to do something in your field, and your half shows them.
- Show the result: a customer posts a tutorial using your kind of product, and you show the finished version.
- React with expertise: a myth in your niche is going round, and you calmly put it right.
- Duet yourself: answer a comment on one of your own older videos, which keeps the conversation on your profile.
Whatever you pick, keep your half short and make your first second count, because viewers see both screens at once and will drift to the busier one. Film in good light, look at the camera rather than the original video, and add on-screen text so the point lands even with the sound off.
Duet, Stitch or repost?
Duet shows both videos at once, side by side. Stitch is TikTok's other remix tool, and TikTok's help centre gives it its own privacy settings page, separate from Duet's, so check both if you're tightening up. A repost just shares their video with your followers without adding anything. If you only want to pass a video on, see how to repost on TikTok instead.
My advice
Use Duet when your half adds something: an answer, a demonstration, a correction made kindly. For a business, the best Duets reply to customer questions or trending how-to videos in your niche, so the original does the asking and you do the answering. Check the Share row first, and if Duet isn't there, take the hint and make your own video instead.
