To disconnect Instagram from Facebook, open Facebook's Settings & privacy, then Settings, Accounts Center, Accounts, and choose Remove next to your Instagram account. Your profile details stop syncing and cross-logins stop, but nothing is deleted. If Instagram is linked to a Facebook Page instead, disconnect it from the Page's Linked accounts settings.
Facebook and Instagram are connected in two different ways, and that's why disconnecting them confuses people. Your personal accounts are joined in Accounts Center, which shares logins, profile details and cross-posting. A business Instagram account can also be linked to a Facebook Page, which is a separate connection used for things like the Page inbox and ads. Here's how to break each link, and what changes when you do.
Disconnect Instagram from your Facebook account (Accounts Center)
- On Facebook, click or tap your profile picture.
- Select Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Open Accounts Center, then Accounts.
- Find your Instagram account and select Remove, then confirm.
You can do the same from Instagram's own Accounts Center. Meta says it's gradually moving people to Meta Accounts, so you may see slightly different menu names, but the Accounts Center area is where the connection lives.
What changes when you remove the account
| After disconnecting | What happens |
|---|---|
| Profile details | Your profile info stops syncing between the accounts |
| Logging in | The accounts can no longer log into each other |
| Your Instagram account | Stays active; nothing is deleted |
| Your Facebook account | Stays active; nothing is deleted |
That third row matters. People often hesitate because they think disconnecting will delete something. It won't. Meta's help is clear that removing login information from a device doesn't deactivate or delete an Instagram account, and removing it from Accounts Center simply separates the two.
Doing it from the Instagram app
Accounts Center is shared between the two apps, so you can start from Instagram if that's where you spend your time. Open your Instagram profile, go to the settings menu, open Accounts Center, then Accounts, and remove the Facebook account there. The result is the same as doing it from Facebook: the link between the two accounts is gone, and both carry on as normal.
How to check the accounts are separate
- Open Accounts Center on either app and look at the Accounts list. Only the account you're in should be there.
- Try logging out of Instagram and back in. If it no longer offers to continue with Facebook, cross-login is off.
- Change your profile photo on one app and check it doesn't change on the other, which tells you profile syncing has stopped too.
Just want to stop logging in with Facebook?
If your real goal is to stop using Facebook to log into Instagram, or the reverse, you don't have to remove the account entirely. Accounts Center has a setting under Connected experiences called Logging in with accounts, where you choose which accounts can log into each other. Meta also says removing your Facebook account from that Accounts Center stops cross-logins completely.
Disconnect Instagram from a Facebook Page
For business accounts, the Page link is separate. To break it in the Facebook app:
- Switch into the Facebook Page.
- Go to Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Open Linked accounts, then Instagram.
- Select Disconnect account and confirm.
Think before you do this on a business account. A Page link is what lets you manage Instagram messages from the Page inbox and run ads that use your Instagram account. Disconnecting can break those features until you relink, so plan it for a quiet moment rather than in the middle of a campaign.
Only one Facebook account per Accounts Center
Meta says you can only add one Facebook account to an Accounts Center. If you're trying to connect Instagram to a different Facebook account, perhaps a new one, you have to remove the current Facebook account first. That's a common reason people need to disconnect at all.
Before you disconnect: a quick checklist
- Make sure you know your Instagram password, so you're not relying on Facebook to log in.
- Check which features you'll lose, such as sharing posts to both apps at once.
- For business accounts, check whether your ads or Page inbox depend on the link.
- If you want to leave Instagram altogether, that's deletion, not disconnection, and Meta says a deleted profile is permanently removed 30 days after the request.
Once they're separate, anything you used to share to both apps at once has to be posted to Facebook on its own: my guide to sharing a video on Facebook covers that side. And to check which devices are still logged in afterwards, see where you're logged in on Facebook. If you change your mind, the same Accounts Center steps work in reverse to add Instagram back.

My verdict
Use Accounts Center, Accounts, Remove to separate your personal Facebook and Instagram, and nothing gets deleted. If you only want to stop shared logins, change Logging in with accounts instead. For business Instagram linked to a Page, disconnect from the Page's Linked accounts, but only once you've checked your ads and inbox won't break.
