To share a video on Facebook, tap or click Share at the bottom right of the video post, then choose where it goes: Share now, your story, Messenger, a group or a Page. To post your own video, tap What's on your mind?, add a photo or video, pick an audience and tap Post.
Sharing a video on Facebook means two different jobs, and people often mix them up. One is sharing a video you've spotted in your Feed so your friends see it too. The other is posting a video of your own. The steps differ, so I'll cover both, with the exact options Facebook's help pages list for the phone app and for a computer.
If you share video for work, to promote a talk, show a product or keep a Page busy, it's worth knowing which share option puts the video where you want it, so I've added a section on that too.
Sharing someone else's video from your Facebook Feed on a phone
This is Facebook's route for a post you see in your Feed, and it works for a video post in the same way:
- Find the video post in your Feed.
- Tap Share in the bottom right, below the post.
- Select where you want to share it. Depending on the post's privacy settings, you may see Share now, Share to your story, Send in Messenger, Share to a Page, Share to a Group, Share From a Private Group, Copy Link and More options.
Facebook adds a handy tip. To share to a friend's timeline, tap Feed below your name, then select On a friend's timeline. Type your friend's name, then tap Share now.
Sharing a Facebook video from a computer
On a computer, the steps are almost the same:
- Scroll to the video post.
- Click Share in the bottom right of the post.
- Select where you'd like to share it. You may see Share now, Share to Feed, Share to your story (custom), Send in Messenger, Share to a group, Share on a friend's profile and Share to a Page.
The list you get depends on the video's privacy settings, so don't worry if one of these is missing on yours.
Why there's no Share button on some Facebook videos
This causes more confusion than anything else. Facebook's help page says that, depending on the privacy settings of the original post, you may not see the option to share it. If someone chose to share their post with friends only, for example, you won't be offered the full range of choices.
There's a second rule. Facebook says you can't share posts with people who weren't part of the original audience, so a post shared with Friends can't be shared with Public. If you need a link instead, my guide to copying a link from a Facebook reel covers the methods that still work.
Posting your own video on Facebook from the phone app
For a video you've filmed or saved, Facebook's steps on Android are:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Tap What's on your mind? at the top of your Feed or timeline.
- Add your update. You can add a photo or video, check in, tag people or add a feeling or activity.
- Select an audience for your post.
- Tap Post.
Posting your own video on Facebook from a computer
- From the top of your Feed, click What's on your mind and your name.
- Click the type of post you'd like to share, such as photo/video.
- Choose another option to add to your post if you like, such as a GIF or a live video.
- Click the audience selector at the top, for example Public, to choose who sees it.
- Click Post.
Choose the audience before you post. It's the setting people forget, and it decides who can see and, as above, who can share the video onwards.
Choosing where to share a Facebook video: story, Messenger, group or Page
| Share option | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Share now | Posts it straight to your timeline | Quick sharing with friends |
| Share to your story | Puts it in your story | A light touch, not a full post |
| Send in Messenger | Sends it to a person or chat | One friend or a small group |
| Share to a group | Posts it in a group you've joined | Topics a community cares about |
| Share to a Page | Posts it on a Page you manage | Keeping a business Page active |
If you're looking for groups to share into, my piece on finding Facebook groups for marketers has ideas. Read each group's rules first, because many don't allow promotional posts.
Sharing videos for your Facebook Page or small business
- Use Share to a Page when you want the video on your Page, not your personal profile.
- Add a sentence of your own. A video shared with a comment from you tells people why it matters.
- Check you're allowed to share it. Sharing someone else's video is fine, but don't present it as your own.
- Keep track of what works. Saved reels are a good source of ideas, and my guide to finding saved reels on Facebook shows where yours are kept.
If you can't share a video on Facebook
- Check the privacy of the original post. If it was shared to friends only, the share options will be limited or missing.
- Check your audience. You can't share to people who weren't in the original audience.
- Update the Facebook app, close it and open it again, and restart your phone if the Share button doesn't respond.
- Try the same share on a computer at facebook.com to see whether it's the app.
- If it still won't work, use Help and support, then Report a problem, to tell Facebook what's happening.

Frequently asked questions
How do I share a video on Facebook?
Tap or click Share at the bottom right of the video post, then choose Share now, your story, Messenger, a group or a Page. For your own video, use What's on your mind? and add the video.
Why can't I share a Facebook video?
Facebook says that depending on the original post's privacy settings you may not see the option to share it. A friends-only video usually can't be shared widely.
Can I share a Facebook video to my story?
Yes. Share to your story is one of the options Facebook lists on both the phone app and the computer when a post's privacy allows it.
How do I send a Facebook video in Messenger?
Tap or click Share on the video post and choose Send in Messenger, then pick who should receive it.
Can I share a video with a bigger audience than the original post?
No. Facebook says you can't share posts with people who weren't part of the original audience, so a friends-only post can't be shared publicly.
