See Where You're Logged In on Facebook (and Log Devices Out)

To see where you're logged in on Facebook, open Password and security in your Accounts Centre settings and select Where you're logged in, then choose your account. Facebook lists each active session with a date, time, location and device type. To end one, choose Select devices to log out, pick the session and click or tap Log out.

If you've ever logged in at a friend's house, on a work laptop or on an old phone, it's reasonable to wonder where else your Facebook account is still open. The good news is that Facebook keeps a list of every place you're logged in, and you can end any of them from there in a few taps.

It's also the first thing to check if you ever suspect somebody else has been in your account. I'll show you where the list lives on a computer and on the phone app, how to read it, and what Facebook says to do about a location you don't recognise.

Finding Where you're logged in on Facebook from a computer

Facebook says you can manage where you're logged in from your Password and security settings. The Where you're logged in section lists where you're currently logged in, and each entry includes a date, time, location and device type. These are the computer steps:

  1. Go to your Password and security settings.
  2. In Accounts Centre, click Password and security.
  3. Click Where you're logged in and select your account to see all the sessions where you're currently logged in.

Facebook notes that it's gradually updating people to Meta Accounts, so you may see either Accounts Centre or Meta Account settings as the place to manage your account settings. The path is the same idea in both.

Finding Where you're logged in on the Facebook phone app

On the Android app, Facebook's steps are:

  1. Tap Menu in the top left of Facebook.
  2. Scroll down and tap Settings and privacy, then tap Settings.
  3. Tap See more in Accounts Centre, then tap Password and security.
  4. Tap Where you're logged in and select your account to see all the sessions where you're currently logged in.

I didn't read a separate iPhone version of these steps, so on an iPhone look for Settings and Accounts Centre in your own menu, since layouts vary by app version.

How to read the Facebook logged-in list

Each entry shows four things: a date, a time, a location and a device type. A few things help when you're scanning it:

  • Look at the device type first. If you've got one phone and one laptop, you'd expect two or three entries, not ten.
  • Check the date and time against when you last used that device.
  • Treat the location with caution, as I explain below. It isn't always exact.
  • Look for devices you've sold, lent or replaced, because those may still be logged in.

Logging out of devices from Where you're logged in on Facebook

On a computer, Facebook says to do the following once you're on the Where you're logged in screen:

  1. Select the session you want to end, or scroll down and click Select devices to log out.
  2. Pick one or more sessions, or click Select all to end every session.
  3. Click Log out.
  4. Click Log out again to reconfirm. This logs you out of Facebook immediately on all the selected devices.

On Android, the steps are similar. You tap the session, or choose Select devices to log out and tick the ones you want to end. Facebook then asks you to enter the confirmation code it sent to your email, tap Next, and finally tap Log out to confirm.

What to do about a location you don't recognise on Facebook

There's a help article on unfamiliar locations in this very section, and it's reassuring. It says that when you sign in through a mobile device, you're often routed through an IP address that doesn't reflect your actual location. So a city you've never visited isn't automatically a problem.

If you don't recognise a location and it isn't connected to a mobile device, Facebook lists these possible reasons:

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Facebook has inaccurate information. Sometimes it can only provide an approximate location that looks wrong.
  • You forgot to log off. You may be seeing a mobile device you're still logged in to, and Facebook says you can log yourself out of it.
  • Someone else has access to your account.

If you think someone else is logged in, Facebook's advice is to log yourself out first and then secure your account by changing your password. If your concern is about location data more broadly, my explainer on whether Facebook tracks your location goes through what the app can see.

Why checking Facebook logins matters for business owners

If you run a Page, an old login on a former assistant's computer or a borrowed laptop is a risk. Make it a habit to open this list every so often, particularly after a team change, a phone upgrade or a trip where you used shared computers. Ending sessions you don't need takes seconds, and you can log back in whenever you want.

Once you're done, it's worth a quick look at your activity too. My guide to finding archived Facebook posts shows where older content lives, which helps you spot anything you didn't post yourself.

If you can't find Where you're logged in on Facebook

  1. Check whether your settings say Accounts Centre or Meta Account. Facebook says you may see either.
  2. Go through Settings and privacy, then Settings, then Accounts Centre, then Password and security.
  3. Update the Facebook app, then close it and reopen it.
  4. Try a computer. The computer route can be easier to follow than the phone menus.
  5. If the list isn't there at all, or you can't log in, use Facebook's Help Centre to recover or secure your account.
