To change the font in Notion, click the three dots at the top right of a page, open Appearance & layout and pick Default, Serif or Mono. It applies to that page only, so you repeat it page by page. Notion says the option is for desktop and web.
Notion pages tend to look the same until someone tells you there's a typeface switch hiding in a menu. If you run a business and keep your client handbook, content calendar or meeting notes in Notion, a small change in look can make a page easier to read and a bit more like your own.
The catch is that Notion doesn't let you pick any font you like. I've followed Notion's own help page so you know exactly what's on offer, where it lives and what it will and won't change.
Switching the Notion font from the page menu
According to Notion's help, you choose from three typography styles on every page you make. Here's the route on desktop or the web version:
- Open the Notion page you want to restyle.
- Click the three dots (...) at the upper right of the page.
- Open Appearance & layout.
- Pick Default, Serif or Mono.
- Look at the page: Notion says all the text on it changes accordingly.
That's the whole job. There's no save button, so if the page looks right, you're finished.
What the three typography styles look like in practice
Notion names the three options and doesn't describe them further, so here's how I'd think about each one for everyday work:
| Notion option | A sensible use |
|---|---|
| Default | Meeting notes, task lists and anything you scan quickly |
| Serif | Long reading such as a handbook, a blog draft or a client brief |
| Mono | Code snippets, scripts, checklists or anything that should look like a technical document |
Those use cases are my suggestions, not Notion's. The only thing Notion promises is that the choice applies to all the text on the page you're on.
Notion font changes apply to one page at a time
This is the bit that catches people out. Notion's help describes font as a setting for each page, so changing it on your weekly plan doesn't touch the rest of your workspace.
If you've built a set of pages and want them all in Serif, you'll need to open each one and repeat the steps above. Pages that sit inside another page don't automatically copy the parent's choice, so check one or two before you assume.
Small text and full width: the other Notion layout switches
While you're in Appearance & layout, you'll see two more options that change how a page feels without changing the font itself:
- Small text: when you turn it on, the text on your page shrinks. It's handy for dense reference pages.
- Full width: this shrinks the margins to widen the content area, which suits wide tables and boards.
Notion says the text size styling and page width only exist on desktop and web. So if you set these up on your laptop, don't expect to adjust them from the phone app.
Changing the Notion font on your phone
Notion's help page doesn't give phone steps for changing the font, and it states that this styling option only exists on desktop and web. I'd rather tell you that than invent a menu. Menus vary between app versions, so if you open a page on your phone, you'll normally see the font you chose on your computer, and any change is best made on a computer.
Notion fonts for small business pages and client work
A few places where a quick Notion typeface change earns its keep:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- A client-facing handbook or onboarding page, where Serif reads like a document rather than a task list.
- An internal process page for your team, where Default keeps things quick to skim.
- A page of templates or scripts you copy from, where Mono makes the copyable parts stand out.
If you're still deciding whether Notion is the right home for all this, my round-up of Notion alternatives for notes, docs and projects compares what else is out there.
Making a Notion page easier to read beyond the font
A typeface switch only goes so far. If a page still feels heavy, I'd look at the structure before reaching for another setting. Short headings, plenty of white space and one idea per block do more for a reader than any style change.
It also helps to decide on a house style once. Pick the style that suits each kind of page, write it down in a short note at the top of your workspace, and anyone who joins your team can follow it without asking. Consistency makes a workspace feel looked after, and clients notice that straight away.
If you're using Notion alongside AI tools to draft and tidy pages, my write-up on how I use AI tools to boost my personal productivity shows where that saves time and where it doesn't.
If you can't find the Notion font option
Work through these in order:
- Check you're on the desktop app or notion.com in a browser, not the phone app.
- Make sure you're on a page, not on a database view you're only looking at as a table.
- Click the three dots at the upper right of the page itself, not the dots next to a block.
- Look for the words Appearance & layout, since menu wording can differ between versions.
- If it still isn't there, check Notion's help centre or contact its support team.
I'd also avoid any extension or add-on that promises extra Notion fonts. Notion's help doesn't mention one, so stick with the three it names.
