Free Animated Text Generators (2026): 9 Tools

An animated text generator turns words into moving titles, from simple fades and bounces to full kinetic typography where text moves in time with speech or music. Some are browser tools for social videos, some are motion design apps and some export lightweight animations for websites. Nine options follow in no particular order.

Text that moves gets noticed in a feed, which is why so many short videos open with a word or two sliding onto the screen.

An animated text generator gets you there without learning a full motion graphics package. The nine tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the maker's own website, read this week. If you already design in Canva, my guide on how to animate in Canva covers its built-in options.

Animated text tools at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website or store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version, a free account, a free edition, an open source release or says the tool itself is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

The five-second rule for moving text

The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative's guidance on WCAG success criterion 2.2.2 says moving, blinking or scrolling information that starts automatically, lasts more than five seconds and sits alongside other content needs a way for the user to pause, stop or hide it, unless the movement is essential.

That rule is about web pages, not your videos. If you put a looping animated headline on your website, keep it under five seconds or give people a pause button, because constant movement makes it hard for some visitors to read the rest of the page.

Video titles versus web animations

For social videos, you'll export text as part of the video file, usually MP4. Browser video makers and template sites are the fastest route, and they're fine for most creators.

For websites and apps, a video file is heavy. Lottie and SVG animations are tiny by comparison, scale to any screen and can play, pause or react to clicks.

Kinetic typography sits in between: text that moves to a voiceover or beat. It takes more timing work, so templates help a lot, and it's worth starting from one.

Questions to ask before you animate text

  1. Is it for a video, a website or both?
  2. Which file type do you need: MP4, GIF, Lottie or SVG?
  3. Can you use your own brand fonts?
  4. Does the free version add a watermark?
  5. Can you time the text to audio?
  6. Will the animation still read with the sound off?

Signs your text needs movement

  • Viewers scroll past your opening. Animate the first line.
  • Your videos are watched on mute. Move the key words.
  • Static titles feel flat. Add one simple motion.
  • Web animations load slowly. Switch to Lottie or SVG.

My plain advice on animated text

Pick one simple animation style, such as a fade or a slide, and use it on every video so your titles look like a brand rather than a sampler. Keep words on screen long enough to read twice.

Frequently asked questions

What is an animated text generator?

It's a tool that turns typed words into moving text, such as titles, captions or kinetic typography, ready to export as a video, GIF or web animation.

Can I make animated text for free?

Yes. Several generators are free or have free versions, though some add watermarks or limit exports. Check the free plan column above.

What is kinetic typography?

It's text animated to move in time with speech, music or an idea, often with words scaling, spinning or sliding to emphasise meaning.

Which format is best for animated text on a website?

Lottie or animated SVG files are usually best, because they're small, sharp at any size and easy to control.

Can animated text be bad for accessibility?

It can if it flashes or moves for a long time without a way to pause it. Keep web animations short and avoid rapid flashing.

How long should animated text stay on screen?

Long enough to read comfortably, usually a couple of seconds for a short phrase. If in doubt, leave it a beat longer.
