Gemini's usage limits are compute based: they depend on how complex your prompt is, which model and features you use and how long your chat is. Your allowance refreshes every five hours until you reach a weekly limit. Google AI Plus gets twice the free limit, Pro four times, and Ultra five or 20 times Pro's limit.
Google doesn't give a fixed number of prompts, which is why the limits feel unpredictable. Its help centre does explain what drains them fastest and how to check where you are. Here's how it all works on each plan, from Google's own Gemini help pages, checked as of October 2026.
Gemini limits by plan
| Plan | Usage limit | Context window |
|---|---|---|
| Without a Google AI plan | Standard limits | 32k tokens |
| Google AI Plus | 2x standard limits | 128k tokens |
| Google AI Pro | 4x standard limits | 1 million tokens |
| Google AI Ultra | 5x or 20x AI Pro's limits, depending on your plan | 1 million tokens |
The context window is a separate limit and the one people forget. It's how much Gemini can read at once. Google says 1 million tokens covers up to 1,500 pages of text or 30,000 lines of code. Go over it and Gemini can miss details scattered through a long file.
What uses up your limit fastest
Google ranks prompt types by how much of your allowance they cost:
| Prompt type | Relative cost | Google's example |
|---|---|---|
| Simple chat | Very low | Write a subject line for my email. |
| Long ongoing chats | Medium | A programming project with a lot of revisions |
| Large file analysis | Medium | Analyze this 100-page PDF financial report. |
| Deep Research | High | A deep competitive analysis |
| Video generation | High | Create a dramatic video of a flight over Rome. |
Video generally uses the most of all. The reason long chats cost more is that Gemini re-reads the whole conversation before every reply, so a chat that's run all morning gets more expensive with each message.
How to check your Gemini usage
- Open Gemini on the web at gemini.google.com.
- At the bottom left, select Settings.
- Choose Usage Limits to see where you stand.
- Watch for Gemini's warning when you're close to the limit; when you hit it, a second notice tells you when it refreshes.
What happens when you hit the limit
- If you have a Google AI subscription, you can carry on the conversation with Flash-Lite.
- You can wait for the five-hour or weekly limit to refresh.
- You can upgrade to a plan with higher limits.
- Without a plan, Google says heavy features such as Deep Research may be unavailable at busy times, and free users may be limited before paying ones.
One more point from Google's help page: features such as media generation and Deep Research use more of your allowance than ordinary chat, on every plan. So a single long research report can use as much as a full morning of quick questions. Plan the big jobs for when you've got room.
Five ways to make your limit last
- Start a new chat when you change topic. This is Google's own tip, because Gemini won't re-read a long history.
- Draft and plan in a simple chat, then use Deep Research once for the final report.
- Trim files before you upload them: send the chapter you need, not the whole book.
- Save video generation for the final version, after you've agreed the script in text.
- Batch small questions into one clear prompt instead of ten short ones.
Features each plan adds
Limits aren't only about volume. Google's feature table shows some tools only appear once you pay:
| Feature | Free | Plus | Pro | Ultra |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deep Research, Canvas, Audio overviews | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Daily brief | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Video generation | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Scheduled actions | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Redo images with Nano Banana Pro | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Tasks in Gemini | No | No | Yes | Yes |
Why your limit can change
Google is clear that these limits aren't fixed. Its help page says limits may change without notice, including because of capacity, and that access can be limited for testing, experiments or availability. When there's a big rise in activity, Google may change limits to keep quality up, and people without a Google AI plan may be limited before people with one.
There's also a travel quirk. If you go from a country where Ultra is sold to one where it isn't, you may still see Ultra notices in Gemini, but you can't upgrade to or use Ultra until you're back in a supported country. If your limits look odd on a trip, that's the first thing I'd check.

Gemini Notebook has its own limits
If you use Gemini Notebook, the tool that used to be NotebookLM, it runs on the same idea: compute-based limits that refresh every five hours until a weekly cap, with Plus at twice the standard limit, Pro at four times and Ultra at five or 20 times Pro. On the web you can choose Generate later for a Studio item when you've run out, and Gemini Notebook makes it in the background.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Age rules apply too: in the UK, the European Economic Area and Switzerland you must be 18 or older to use Gemini with a Google AI plan.

My verdict
Most people who hit Gemini's limit are running one very long chat or generating video. Change those two habits before you upgrade. If you still run out every week, the jump from Free to Pro gives you four times the usage and a far bigger context window, which is the upgrade I'd make first.
