Atlassian Rovo: What's Included, Who Can Switch It On, and What It Does

Atlassian Rovo is the AI layer across Atlassian's cloud apps: it searches your company's tools, answers questions in a chat, and runs AI agents that take on tasks. As of October 2026 Rovo credits are included in all paid Jira, Confluence, Service Collection and Teamwork Collection cloud subscriptions.

Here's the catch. Your organisation admin has to be on a verified business domain to turn Rovo on. If your Atlassian organisation is registered with a generic email domain such as gmail.com or outlook.com, Rovo can't be enabled, even if you're paying for Jira or Confluence. Check this first if you set Atlassian up with a personal address.

Who can switch Rovo on

Two conditions have to be true. You need a paid cloud subscription to Jira, Confluence, Service Collection or Teamwork Collection, because that's where the Rovo credits come from. And your organisation admin needs to be on a verified business domain.

If you set Atlassian up with a Gmail or Outlook address, the domain is the job to fix first. Until the organisation is on a verified business domain, nobody can enable Rovo, however senior they are.

Rovo Search: one search across your tools

Rovo Search looks across Jira, Confluence and connected third-party apps such as Google Drive and Slack in one go. It respects your permissions, so each person only finds what they could already open.

For a team whose decisions sit in Slack, specs in Confluence and tasks in Jira, that's the part that saves the most time. It's the same idea as the tools in my roundup of AI knowledge base software, built into the apps you already use.

Rovo Chat: questions answered from your own content

Rovo Chat answers using company data you have access to. You'll find it in Jira, Jira Service Management, Jira Product Discovery and Confluence, and the Rovo browser extension puts it anywhere you're working in the browser.

The useful habit is asking it the questions you'd normally message a colleague about, such as where a decision was written down or what's blocking a piece of work. Because it uses only what you have access to, two people asking the same question can get different answers.

Rovo agents, Studio and Definitions

Agents are the part that does work rather than finds it. Atlassian describes them as AI virtual teammates, with examples such as cleaning up Jira backlogs, organising Confluence pages and helping with onboarding. Builders create their own agents and AI-powered automations in Studio, which sits alongside Automations, Company Hubs and Assets.

Definitions is the small feature I'd point new starters to. It explains company jargon it finds in your own content, so the acronyms everyone else takes for granted come with an explanation.

I'd start most teams on Search and Chat, because neither needs any building. Agents and Studio come later, once you can see which jobs keep coming back every week.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

How to get started with Rovo

  1. Check your Atlassian organisation is on a verified business domain, not gmail.com or outlook.com.
  2. Confirm you're on a paid Jira, Confluence, Service Collection or Teamwork Collection cloud subscription.
  3. Ask your organisation admin to turn on Rovo.
  4. Connect the third-party apps you want Search to cover, such as Google Drive and Slack.
  5. Try Search first, then Chat, then build one agent in Studio for a job your team repeats.

My verdict on Atlassian Rovo

I'd switch it on if you already pay for Jira or Confluence in the cloud, because the credits come with the subscription and Search alone can save your team a lot of hunting. I'd start with one agent for a dull, repeated job, such as backlog clean-up, before building more, and I'd connect Google Drive and Slack early so Search covers the places your team talks and stores files. I'd skip it for now if your organisation is on a Gmail or Outlook domain and you can't change that, because Rovo won't switch on. If you're still deciding how Jira and Confluence fit together, start with Jira vs Confluence.

Turning on an AI tool is the easy part. Getting a team to use it well is where I help. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement, AI automation and GEO, which is about getting your business seen and cited in AI answers. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams, telecom companies and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
