No notification is listed for downloads. TikTok's Inbox lets creators filter their activity by Likes and Favourites, Comments, Add yours, and Mentions and tags, and downloads aren't one of them. What the creator does control is whether anyone can download their videos at all.
If you've tapped Save video on someone's TikTok and then worried they'll find out, you can relax a little. TikTok doesn't list downloads among the activity it shows creators. There are a few details worth knowing, though, because the creator decides whether downloading is possible in the first place, and the bookmark icon works differently.
What creators are told about, according to TikTok
TikTok's notifications page explains that you get notifications for new messages, activities, followers and more, and that push notifications can include likes, comments and video suggestions. In the Inbox, creators can filter All activity by:
- Likes and Favourites
- Comments
- Add yours
- Mentions and tags
Downloads don't appear in that list. So a download isn't something TikTok sets out to show the creator by name.
Download versus Favourite: don't mix them up
| Action | How you do it | Listed in the creator's activity filters? |
|---|---|---|
| Download | Share, then Save video | No |
| Favourite | Bookmark icon on the side of the video | Yes, under Likes and Favourites |
| Like | Heart icon or double-tap | Yes, under Likes and Favourites |
If you want to keep a video quietly, downloading is the one that isn't listed. The bookmark is a different story, because Favourites sit in the creator's Likes and Favourites filter. For the download steps themselves, see my guide on how to save a TikTok video.
Why you can't download some TikToks
TikTok gives creators a Video downloads setting. TikTok's help page spells out what each choice does:
- Downloads on: viewers can save the content to their device, turn videos into live photos or GIFs, and share directly to some other platforms.
- Downloads off: viewers can't save, convert or share it directly to some third-party platforms. The creator keeps download and sharing options for their own content.
- Turning it off later: it stops downloads of posts already published and future posts, but copies saved while it was on stay on other people's devices.
- Private accounts and under-16s: downloads are off by default and can't be turned on. A public account can choose.
TikTok also points out that even with downloads off, people can still share a creator's content through a link or direct messages on other platforms. Turning downloads off limits saving, not sharing.
How to download a TikTok you're allowed to save
- Open the post in the TikTok app.
- Tap the Share button.
- Tap Save video, or Save photo for photo posts.
TikTok says this option only appears on posts with download permissions turned on. If you don't see it, the creator has switched downloads off, the account is private, or the creator is under 16.
If you're the creator: how to control downloads
- In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap the Menu button at the top.
- Tap Settings and privacy, then Privacy, then Downloads.
- Turn Video downloads on or off.
If you want even tighter control, you can also change who can view each post. TikTok lets public accounts choose Everyone, Friends (followers you follow back) or Only you for each post. Fewer viewers means fewer people who could save it.
What about screen recording and screenshots?
Screen recording is a phone feature, not a TikTok action, so it's a separate question from downloading. I've covered the screenshot side in does TikTok notify screenshots.
What creators can and can't see after a download
Creators can see plenty about how a video performs. TikTok Studio's Manage area shows performance numbers for each post, such as likes, shares and views, and the Analytics area covers overview, viewer and engagement data. Those are numbers about the video. None of the inbox filters TikTok lists is a download filter, so there's no named list of downloaders for a creator to open.

Sending a TikTok to a friend on another app
Sharing is not the same as downloading either. TikTok's sharing guide notes something most people don't know: when you send a post to a friend on another platform, TikTok also sends that post to them on TikTok, as long as they tap the shared link and allow direct messages from others. So a share can land in two places, while a download stays on your phone.
| What you do | Where the video ends up |
|---|---|
| Save video | A copy on your device |
| Share by link to another app | In that app, and possibly in their TikTok messages too |
| Repost | In front of your followers, credited to the creator |
Be fair with what you download
Being able to download a video doesn't mean you can reuse it as your own. Keep downloads for personal reference. If you want to share someone's video with your followers, use TikTok's repost button, which credits the creator; here's how to repost on TikTok.
My take
Downloads aren't one of the activities TikTok lists for creators, so a quiet download won't show up in their filters. The real gatekeeper is the creator's Video downloads setting. If a creator has turned it off, respect that and use a repost or a link instead.
Frequently asked questions
Can a TikTok creator see who downloaded their video?
TikTok doesn't list downloads among the activity filters in the Inbox, which are Likes and Favourites, Comments, Add yours, and Mentions and tags.
Why is there no Save video option on a TikTok?
TikTok only shows Save video on posts where the creator has allowed downloads. Private accounts and creators under 16 have downloads off and can't turn them on.
If a creator turns off downloads, do saved copies disappear?
No. TikTok says videos or photos downloaded while the setting was on stay on the other person's device.
Does turning off downloads stop people sharing my TikToks?
Not completely. TikTok says others can still share your content through a link or direct messages on third-party platforms.
Do I need the TikTok app to download a video?
TikTok's steps use the app: open the post, tap Share, then Save video. The option only shows when the creator allows downloads.
Is downloading the same as adding to Favourites?
No. Downloading saves a copy to your phone. Favourites keeps it in the app, and TikTok lists Likes and Favourites as one of the creator's activity filters.
