To make a TikTok a Live Photo on an iPhone, open the post, tap the Share button, then scroll across and tap Live Photo. TikTok saves it to your photo album, and you can then set it as your wallpaper in your phone settings. On Android, tap Share, then Set as Wallpaper instead. It only works on public posts, and the saved version has no sound.
This is one of those small TikTok features that people find by accident and then can't find again. The button lives in the share menu, it looks different on iPhone and Android, and it quietly refuses to work on some videos. Here's how it works on each phone, and why it sometimes doesn't.
Make a TikTok a Live Photo on iPhone
TikTok's help says the Live Photo option is only supported on Apple devices. The steps are short:
- Open the TikTok app and go to the post you want to save.
- Tap the Share button on the side of the post.
- Tap Live Photo at the bottom. You may need to scroll across the row of options to find it.
- Open your Photos app. The post is saved to your album as a Live Photo.
To use it as your lock screen or home screen background, set it as your wallpaper from your iPhone's settings, the same way you would with any other Live Photo you've taken yourself.
Set a TikTok as your wallpaper on Android
Android works differently. Instead of a Live Photo, TikTok offers a wallpaper option, and it uses a separate app to do it:
- Go to the post you want in the TikTok app.
- Tap the Share button.
- Tap Set as Wallpaper. You may need to scroll across to find it.
- If you're asked to, follow the steps to install the TikTok Live Wallpaper app.
- Tap Set as wallpaper at the bottom.

Why you can't save some TikToks as a Live Photo
If the option is missing or greyed out, it's usually one of these:
- The post isn't public. TikTok says only public posts can be saved as Live Photos or wallpaper. Private posts and some friends-only content won't show the option.
- You're on the wrong kind of phone. The Live Photo option is Apple only, and the wallpaper option and Live Wallpaper app are Android only.
- Your app is out of date. TikTok's first troubleshooting step is to make sure you have the latest version of the app.
- Your device doesn't support Live Photos. Again, that's an Apple-only format.
If none of those fix it, TikTok asks you to send feedback with screenshots of the problem. In the app, tap Need more help? at the bottom of the help article and follow the steps to submit a ticket.

The sound doesn't come with it
TikTok calls these dynamic photos, and its help page is clear that they don't include sound. So if you were hoping to save a video with its audio, this isn't the tool. For keeping a full copy of a video, the regular save option is the one you want, and I've explained it in my guide to saving a TikTok video. And if you're worried about the creator finding out, I've covered whether TikTok tells people when you save their video.

A small idea for brands
If you post eye-catching loops, such as a product spinning, a slow pour or a calming scene, your public posts are the kind people might save as a wallpaper. That's a nice bit of brand presence on someone's phone. It only works if the post is public, so keep that in mind before you lock anything down. I wouldn't build a strategy around it, but a looping clip that looks good without sound is worth making anyway, because plenty of people scroll with the sound off.
