How to Save a TikTok Video: Share Menu, Photos and Your Own

To save a TikTok video, open it in the app, tap the Share button on the side, then tap Save video. If Save video isn't there, the creator has switched downloads off for that post, and TikTok's help says that's their choice. You can also save your own video to your device from the Post screen before you publish.

Saving a TikTok sounds like the simplest job in the world, until the button isn't there and you can't work out why. If you make videos for a business or a side project, you'll want to know both halves: how to save other people's clips when they allow it, and how to keep copies of your own. Everything below comes from TikTok's own help page, so it's the route TikTok itself supports.

Saving a TikTok video from the Share menu

TikTok's help says you can save videos and photos to your device for offline viewing and sharing, as long as the person who posted allows others to download their content. Here are the steps it gives:

  1. Open the TikTok app and go to the video you'd like to save.
  2. Tap the Share button on the side of the video.
  3. Tap Save video.

That's the whole job. The clip then goes to your device, and you can watch it without a connection or send it on from there.

When the Save video option is missing on TikTok

This is the bit people trip over. TikTok's help says that if you don't have the option to save a video, it means the creator doesn't allow it. There's nothing wrong with your phone or your account, and there's no setting on your side that will change it.

It's worth respecting. Creators choose who can keep a copy of their work, and the sensible move is to ask them if you really need the file. If you're looking for another way to keep hold of a clip, I'd suggest sharing the link to the video instead. If the app itself won't load, my guide to the TikTok no internet connection error covers the usual causes.

How to save TikTok photo posts

Photo posts work slightly differently, because there can be several photos in one post. TikTok's help gives these steps:

  1. Go to the photo post in the TikTok app.
  2. Tap Share.
  3. Tap Save photo.
  4. If there are multiple photos, tap Select all to save every one, or pick the ones you want.
  5. Tap Save.

The same rule applies. If you can't see the option, the creator doesn't allow it.

Saving your own TikTok video before you post it

If you're the one making the video, save a copy before it goes live. TikTok recommends downloading your videos or photos before you post so you have offline copies of your content, and it gives two ways to do that:

  1. On the Post screen, tap More options, then turn on the Save to device setting.
  2. Or, while you're editing, tap Save on the side panel to download a single photo or video post.

Menus vary by app version, so the labels on your screen might sit in a slightly different place. If you run a small business account, I'd turn this on early. A raw copy of every video means you can reuse a clip on another platform or in an ad later, without hunting for the original.

Letting other people save your TikTok videos, or stopping them

TikTok's help says you can manage whether others can download your posts, and it links to a dedicated help page for that setting. I couldn't confirm the exact menu path from that page, so rather than guess, I'd search for video downloads in TikTok's Help Center and follow the steps shown there.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

The thinking is simple. Switching downloads on makes it easier for fans to keep and share your work. Switching them off keeps the video in the app. Either is a normal choice, so decide per account based on what you post. If you're curious about what viewers can see about you, my piece on whether TikTok notifies someone when you screenshot their video is a useful companion.

Saving a TikTok video: a quick table

What you want to saveWhat TikTok's help says to do
Someone else's videoShare, then Save video, if the creator allows it
A photo postShare, Save photo, then Save
Your own video before postingMore options, then Save to device
Your own video while editingTap Save on the side panel

What to do if you can't save a TikTok video

  1. Check that you're opening the video in the TikTok app, because the steps are given for the app.
  2. Tap Share and look at the full row of options again.
  3. Update the TikTok app and try once more.
  4. Accept that the creator may not allow downloads, and ask them directly if you need the clip.
  5. Share the link to the video instead, if you only need to find it again.

I'd steer clear of websites or apps that promise to download any clip. TikTok's own help doesn't point you to them, and they can ask for permissions or logins you shouldn't hand over.

Keeping the TikTok videos you save organised

Once a video is on your phone, give the file a name that says what the clip shows and who made it, and keep a short note of where it came from. If you plan to use anything on a business page, make sure you've got the creator's permission first. Saving a clip for yourself isn't the same as having the right to repost it.
