You can join or create up to 100 Discord servers. Discord Nitro raises the limit to 200, and if Nitro ends while you're in more than 100, you keep them all but can't join any new ones until you're back under 100.
Hit 'You're at the 100 server limit' and Discord stops you joining anything new. Here's how the cap works, straight from Discord's help centre, and the quickest way to make room.
The limits
| Account | Server limit |
|---|---|
| Standard account | 100 servers (joined or created) |
| With Nitro | 200 servers |
| Over 100, Nitro ends | You keep them, but can't join more until you're under 100 |
The detail people miss is the word 'create'. Discord counts servers you've made as well as servers you've joined, so a handful of test servers you set up and forgot about are using up slots.
What happens if Nitro runs out
Discord is generous here. If you're in more than 100 servers and lose Nitro, it won't remove you from any of them. The catch is that you can't join any new servers until your total is back under 100. So if you've drifted well past 100 on Nitro, you'd need to leave enough servers to get back under 100 before you could join anything new without it. That's worth knowing before you let Nitro lapse, because the clear-out has to happen first.
How to make room, step by step
- Scroll your server list, the column on the far left of the app.
- Look for servers you haven't opened in months, test servers you created and old event servers.
- Open the server's menu and leave it; for servers you own, decide whether to delete them or hand them to someone else first, so the community isn't left without an owner.
- Repeat until you're comfortably under the limit, so one new invite doesn't put you straight back at the cap.
Keep the list manageable
Discord lets you rearrange servers by dragging their icons, and group them into folders by dragging one on top of another. Folders don't change the count, but they make it much easier to see which servers you use and which you've forgotten, which is half the battle when you're near the limit.
Joining well when you've got room
When you do join, Discord's help centre points out a useful step most people skip. If you open an invite link directly, you can set your server nickname, choose whether server members can message you, and decide whether to show your activity status, all before you press Accept. It's worth doing every time, particularly in big public servers.
A simple rule of thumb
If a server hasn't made you open it in the last few months, it's a candidate to leave. Communities you care about will still be there if you rejoin later through a fresh invite, and you'll be able to choose your settings again on the way in. Keeping a buffer of ten or so open slots means you're never caught out when a friend sends an invite you want to accept straight away.
Is Nitro worth it just for servers?
Only if you really need more than 100 active communities, which most people don't. For most of us, a regular clear-out does the same job. If you're a community manager in lots of client servers, the higher limit can make sense; otherwise, tidy up first and see if the problem goes away.
My verdict
A hundred servers is a lot. If you're at the cap, the fix is almost always a clear-out rather than an upgrade, starting with servers you created yourself. And while you're tidying, it's a good moment to sort out your other chat apps too, such as blocking unwanted contacts on Telegram and reporting spam accounts on Telegram.

Frequently asked questions
How many servers can you join on Discord?
Up to 100, counting servers you've joined and servers you've created. Discord Nitro raises it to 200.
What happens to my Discord servers if Nitro expires?
Discord won't remove you from any servers, but you can't join new ones until you're back under 100.
Do servers I created count towards the Discord limit?
Yes. Discord says users can join or create up to 100 servers, so both count.
How do I join a Discord server?
Press the + icon at the bottom of your server list to join or create one, or open an invite link, where you can adjust your nickname, direct message and activity settings before pressing Accept.
Does leaving a server open up a slot straight away?
Discord's cap is on how many servers you're in, so leaving servers brings your total down and makes room under the 100, or 200 with Nitro.
Do server folders count towards the limit?
Folders just group servers together in your list; each server inside still counts towards the limit.
