Claude Pro is the everyday plan: $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month on the annual plan, with Claude Code, projects and Opus included. Max is for people who use Claude all day: $100 a month for 5x Pro's usage or $200 for 20x, plus priority access at busy times, early access to new features and $100 to $200 a month in API credits. If you keep hitting Pro's limits, Max is the upgrade; if you don't, stay on Pro.
I read Anthropic's Claude pricing page and its help articles on the Pro and Max plans, as of October 2026. For most people the deciding question isn't features. It's how often you run out of usage.

What you get on Pro
Anthropic's pricing page pitches Pro for everyday work. Anthropic's help centre puts it at $20 a month in the US billed monthly, and the pricing page shows $17 a month if you pay $200 up front for the year. You get more usage per session than the Free plan, priority access during busy periods, early access to new features, Claude Code, projects, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, and access to Opus.
One thing catches people out: Pro doesn't include API usage through the Claude Console. If you also want to build with the API, you pay for that separately. Anthropic also notes that Claude Cowork is now just Claude and is rolling out to Pro and Max.
What Max adds
Max is everything in Pro with far more room. You choose Max 5x at $100 a month or Max 20x at $200 a month, for five or twenty times Pro's usage allowance. Anthropic adds higher output limits, early access to advanced features and priority access at high traffic times, so you're less likely to be slowed down when everyone else is online.
There's a detail many comparisons miss. Max comes with $100 to $200 a month in API credits to build on the Claude Platform, which Pro doesn't include. The pricing table also lists Fable at 50% of weekly limits on both Max tiers, while Pro reaches it through usage credits. Max is billed monthly only, and Anthropic says it doesn't offer standard discounts on individual plans.

How to choose between them
- Count how often you hit Pro's limit in a normal week. Rarely? Stay on Pro.
- Hitting it most days, or running long Claude Code sessions? Max 5x is the natural next step.
- Running Claude for most of your working day, across several projects? Look at Max 20x.
- Want to build with the API too? Max's monthly API credits can cover early experiments.
- Prefer to pay yearly? Only Pro offers an annual price.

My advice on Claude Pro or Max
Start on Pro. It's the plan most people need, and the annual option brings the monthly figure down. Upgrade to Max 5x only when limits are getting in the way of real work, not because more sounds better. If Claude is effectively your second employee, writing, coding and researching all day, Max 20x and its API credits start to make sense.
