Is BudgetAir Legit? Fare Rules, Fees and Refunds (2026)

BudgetAir is a real online flight seller, listed by Wikipedia as a Travix brand, and Travix has been owned by Trip.com Group since 2020. It's an agent rather than an airline, and its US fare rules document says tickets are non-refundable, with fees of 50 US dollars to cancel on the booking day and 100 US dollars per person to change. Read those rules before you pay.

If you've been quoted a fare on BudgetAir that's well below the airline's own site, I understand why you'd want to check who's on the other end. I'd rather you know the rules before paying than find them on a bad day. So here's what I could read in BudgetAir's own US fare rules document, plus what Wikipedia says about who owns it.

Who owns BudgetAir and who you're booking with

According to Wikipedia, BudgetAir is one of the brands of Travix, an Amsterdam-based online travel company, and Trip.com Group acquired Travix International BV in 2020. That's a large, identifiable parent, which is the first thing I look for when a travel seller is unfamiliar.

BudgetAir isn't an airline. Its fare rules document talks about the ticketing airline, airline penalties and fare rules in the third person, which tells you it's selling and issuing tickets on the airlines' behalf. Your seat is with the airline, but changes and cancellations go through BudgetAir first. That split is the thing that trips people up.

When your BudgetAir booking is confirmed

BudgetAir's fare rules say airfares and reservations aren't secured until all funds are collected, fares are reconfirmed and tickets are issued. They also say you must keep enough funds on your card from the time of booking until the ticket is issued, and that if the card is declined, BudgetAir may reprice or rebook, then ask for your approval.

In practice, don't treat the booking page as the finish line. Wait for the ticket confirmation, check the names against your passport and report mistakes quickly. The rules say names must match your government ID and that name changes are not allowed.

BudgetAir cancellation, change and refund rules

This is the section to read twice. Here's what BudgetAir's US fare rules document states:

  • Cancellation requests have to be made by phone and received on the same date as the booking is completed. If cancellation is possible, a 50 US dollars per person fee applies. After that date, the fare rules attached to your ticket apply.
  • If changes are allowed, BudgetAir charges a change processing fee of 100 US dollars per person, on top of the airline's own change penalty and any difference in fare.
  • Change requests must reach BudgetAir at least 48 hours before the original departure.
  • The document says tickets are non-refundable.
  • Customers making last-minute changes, within one business day of departure, have to contact the airline directly.

It also says BudgetAir has no control over airline penalties for changes, which it says can be as much as 500 US dollars per ticket. So a cheap fare with a change in the middle can end up costing more than a pricier fare you can alter.

One important caveat: the version I could read is dated 2020 in its footer, and BudgetAir operates in several countries with their own terms. Check the conditions on the BudgetAir site you're booking on, because the figures above may have changed.

BudgetAir fees and extra charges to watch for

The fare rules say prices are shown in US dollars and include all taxes and fees. They also say a fare may include a non-refundable BudgetAir fee, billed separately on your card statement, and that your total may be made up of several charges: BudgetAir, the airline and partners such as a travel insurance provider.

That last point matters if you click through an add-on without noticing. Look at the final payment screen for extras, untick anything you don't want and keep your card statement open afterwards. If you do buy trip insurance, the document says you contact the insurer directly for changes, cancellations and claims, rather than BudgetAir.

Also remember that baggage fees are separate. BudgetAir's rules say prices don't include baggage fees or other fees charged directly by the airline, so check the airline's site for what your fare allows. If you travel for work, my travel backpack guide covers the packing side.

If something goes wrong with your BudgetAir flight

The fare rules tell customers to call BudgetAir first if a problem affects their ability to travel. The document says that if you don't, costs or added expenses you incur won't be reimbursed by BudgetAir. That's a strong instruction, so keep your booking reference, the phone number from your confirmation and a note of who you spoke to and when.

Changes by email are mentioned too: the document says to email the address on the US site, after which BudgetAir replies with a quote or denies the request if fare rules don't allow it. For the current contact details, use the Help or Manage Booking links on the BudgetAir site itself rather than a number from a search result. Look-alike support pages and paid ads are common for travel sellers.

Questions to ask before you book with BudgetAir

  • Is the fare refundable or changeable at all, and what's the airline's penalty?
  • Is the price total including BudgetAir's own fee, and what is the final amount on the payment page?
  • Do you need to cancel today, since the cancellation route applies on the booking date?
  • Would booking direct with the airline give you more flexibility for a little more?
  • Do you already have travel cover that makes insurance add-ons unnecessary?

How to spot a fake BudgetAir page or phone line

Travel brands get impersonated more than most. Type the address yourself, avoid support numbers pasted into ads or forums, and never pay for a change by gift card or bank transfer to someone who rang you. If a payment page asks for card details somewhere other than normal checkout, stop. And if a hotel is part of the plan, the hidden risk zones in a hotel are worth knowing before you arrive.

My verdict on whether BudgetAir is legit

BudgetAir is a real company with a traceable parent, and nothing I read suggests the tickets aren't issued. The catch is flexibility. Its own rules lean towards no refunds, fees on changes and a short window to cancel, so a low fare is only good if your plans are fixed. I can't comment on how its customer service performs for anyone else. If your trip might move, I'd compare a flexible fare booked direct before deciding.

Frequently asked questions

Is BudgetAir legit?

It's a real online flight seller. Wikipedia lists it as a Travix brand and says Trip.com Group acquired Travix in 2020. The catch is its strict rules on refunds and changes.

Is BudgetAir an airline or a travel agent?

It's an agent. Its fare rules refer to the ticketing airline and airline penalties separately, so the airline carries you while BudgetAir handles the booking and changes.

Can I cancel a BudgetAir booking?

BudgetAir's US fare rules say cancellation requests must be made by phone on the same date as booking, with a 50 US dollars per person fee if possible. After that, the fare rules apply and tickets are described as non-refundable.

How much does BudgetAir charge to change a ticket?

Its US fare rules document says 100 US dollars per person, on top of the airline's change penalty and any fare difference, and requests must arrive at least 48 hours before departure. That document is dated 2020, so check current terms.

Does the BudgetAir price include baggage?

Not necessarily. The fare rules say prices don't include baggage or other fees charged directly by the airline, so check the airline's site.
