Claude Free vs Pro (2026): What You Get, the Two Limits and When to Upgrade

Claude Free gives you a session limit that resets every five hours, while Pro gives you more usage per session, priority access when Claude is busy, Claude Code and longer multi-step tasks. As of Nov 2026, Pro also has a weekly limit on top of the five-hour one, and it still doesn't include the API, or the Fable models unless you pay for usage credits.

If you use Claude for work and keep running into the wall, that's the choice in a sentence. Below is what each plan gives you according to Anthropic's own help pages, the catches that aren't on the upgrade screen, and how to tell when you've outgrown Free.

What the free plan gives you

Free Claude is open to anyone in a supported location with an email address: you sign up at claude.ai. It runs on a session-based usage limit that resets every five hours. Anthropic doesn't publish a message count, because the number you can send varies with demand, and it may add other limits to keep access fair. Claude tells you when you've hit the limit, or when a prompt is too long for the context window.

Free users can also use the memory import feature to bring memory over from another AI provider, though you can't import your past conversation history.

What Pro adds on top

Anthropic's Pro page lists five benefits:

  • More usage per session than the Free plan.
  • Priority access during high-traffic periods.
  • Early access to new features.
  • Claude Code access.
  • Longer, multi-step tasks.

As of Nov 2026, the help page lists Pro at $20 per month (US), with pricing in local currency where supported and a discounted annual option. Prices vary by region, so check claude.ai/upgrade or your app store, and the full Claude pricing breakdown for the wider picture. There are no standing discounts on individual plans, and Support can't issue one-off coupons.

Two limits, not one

This is the part the upgrade screen doesn't spell out. Pro has a five-hour limit and a weekly usage limit that applies across all models. The five-hour period starts when you send your first message and resets in full five hours later. The weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week that's assigned to your account, whatever day you subscribed, and you can see your next reset in Settings, then Usage.

So moving to Pro buys you more room per session, but a heavy week can still stop you on the weekly cap. And because there's no fixed message count on any plan, how far you get depends on message length, the size of files you attach, how long the conversation is, and which model or feature you're using.

One more thing people don't expect: claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all count towards the same limit. A long Claude Code session in the afternoon eats into the same allowance as your morning chats. There's more on how this works in my guide to Claude usage limits.

What Pro still leaves out

Two gaps catch people out. First, the API. Pro doesn't include API usage through the Claude Console. If you want to build with the API, you set up Console access and pay for that usage separately.

Second, the Fable models. Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 aren't included in Pro's usage limits. On Pro they run on pay-as-you-go usage credits from the start, and they aren't available on Free at all. On Max and Ultra they're a standard part of the plan, and you can use up to half of your weekly limits on them at no extra cost. The earlier promotion that included Fable 5 in Pro's limits ended on July 19, 2026.

Signs you've outgrown Free

  1. Open Settings, then Usage, and look at Current session to see how much you've used and the time left.
  2. Note when you hit the limit and what you were doing: one very long chat, big files, or lots of tools switched on.
  3. Try the free fixes first: start a new chat when a conversation gets long, turn off connectors and web search you don't need, lower the effort level for routine jobs, and move reference material into a Project.
  4. If you still hit the five-hour limit during work you can't trim, Pro is the next step.
  5. Once you're on Pro, if the weekly limit becomes the thing stopping you, compare usage credits with Max.

Usage credits, and when Max makes sense

Pro subscribers can switch on usage credits to keep working beyond the plan's included limits. With credits enabled, your work carries on instead of stopping when you hit a limit. That suits an occasional heavy week better than a permanent upgrade.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Max is built for people who work with Claude all day. Anthropic says it gives five times the Pro plan's usage every five hours and every week, priority access to new models and features, and monthly credits for the Claude API. If you upgrade, the new plan's limits apply straight away. Here's my full look at Claude Max if you're weighing it up.

Length limits are a separate problem

If Claude says your chat is too long, that's a length limit, not a usage limit, and the fix is different. Length limits are about the context window, which is how much Claude can hold in one chat. On paid plans the newest models support up to a 1M token context window, while others support 500K or 200K tokens.

For users with code execution switched on, Claude summarises earlier messages automatically as a long chat nears the limit, though those longer chats use more of your usage allowance. The bigger fix is a Project. Projects use retrieval, so Claude loads only the relevant content into the chat. Keep project instructions short and clear out files you no longer use. This walkthrough of Claude Projects shows how to set one up.

What I'd do in your shoes

I'd stay on Free until I hit the five-hour limit twice in a week doing paid work, after trying a fresh chat and a Project first. Then I'd go Pro. I'd skip Max until Pro's weekly limit is what's stopping me, not the five-hour one, and I'd only pay for Fable usage credits if a specific job needs those models. Anthropic changes limits and plans often, so check its own help pages before you decide.

If your team is deciding which Claude plan to roll out and how to use it well, that's the kind of AI enablement I help with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Claude Free and Pro?

Free has a session limit that resets every five hours. Pro adds more usage per session, priority access in busy periods, early access to new features, Claude Code and longer multi-step tasks, along with a weekly limit across all models.

How many messages do you get on Claude Free?

Anthropic doesn't give a fixed number. It varies with demand on Free, and on every plan it depends on message length, file size, conversation length and the model or feature you use.

Does Claude Pro include the API?

No. Pro doesn't include API usage through the Claude Console, which is set up and paid for separately.

Can I use Fable models on Claude Pro?

Yes, but only with pay-as-you-go usage credits, because Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 aren't included in Pro's usage limits. They aren't available on Free.

Does Claude Code use the same limit as chat?

Yes. Usage across claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop counts towards the same limit.
