ChatGPT Prompts for Job Interview Preparation: 40 Questions and Answers

Straight answer: ChatGPT is one of the best free interview coaches you'll ever get, but only if you use it to sharpen your thinking rather than to write scripts you memorise word for word. Below are 40 prompts covering your story, behavioural questions, salary talk, curveballs, and mock interviews, plus a real story about a client who used exactly this process before landing a job after seven months of rejections.

Why I started building interview prompts for clients in the first place

Last year I worked with a woman called Sarah, a marketing manager from Bristol, who had been made redundant and had gone through 11 interviews without a single offer. She was smart, well qualified, and completely rattled every time she sat in front of a panel. Not because she didn't know her job, but because she'd never learned to talk about it under pressure.

We spent one afternoon building a set of ChatGPT prompts around her actual CV and the actual job descriptions she was applying to. Not generic "tell me about yourself" templates pulled from a blog. Prompts that forced her to be specific about her own numbers, her own conflicts, her own failures. Three weeks later she got an offer at a fintech company in Leeds, and she told me the interviewer stopped her mid-answer to say "that's the clearest answer to that question I've heard all week."

That's the whole point of this list. Not to hand you words to say. To hand you a tool that pulls the right words out of your own head faster than you'd manage alone at 11pm the night before an interview.

The one rule that makes or breaks this approach

Before the 40 prompts, one uncomfortable truth: if you copy ChatGPT's answer straight into your head and recite it, you will sound like ChatGPT. Flat, generic, oddly formal, and completely unable to survive a single follow-up question. Interviewers who do this for a living can smell a memorised answer within about 15 seconds, and the moment they ask "can you give me another example" you're stuck.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

The prompts below work when you treat ChatGPT as a sparring partner, not a script writer. Feed it your real details. Argue with its first draft. Ask it to push you harder. Then say the answer out loud, in your own words, three or four times, until it sounds like you talking, not a LinkedIn post reading itself aloud.

How to run these prompts, step by step

  • Paste your CV and the job description into the same ChatGPT chat before you ask anything else, so every answer it gives you is anchored to the actual role.
  • Work through one category of prompts per sitting, no more than 30 to 40 minutes, because interview prep fatigue sets in fast and the answers get lazy.
  • After every answer ChatGPT gives you, ask it: "Now make this 40% shorter and remove anything that sounds like a template."
  • Record yourself saying the answer out loud on your phone. Listen back. If it sounds like you're reading, rewrite it in your own words.
  • Two days before the interview, run a full mock interview session (prompts 36 to 40 below) with your camera on, not just typing.

40 ChatGPT prompts for job interview preparation

1. Telling your story straight

  • Interview question: Tell me about yourself.
ChatGPT prompt: "Here is my CV and the job description for [role]. Write me a 90 second spoken answer to 'tell me about yourself' that connects my last three roles to this specific job, using my own achievements, not generic phrasing."
  • Interview question: Walk me through your CV.
ChatGPT prompt: "Turn my CV into a chronological story with a clear thread that shows why each move made sense, so I can talk through it without sounding like I'm reading a list."
  • Interview question: Why is there a gap on your CV?
ChatGPT prompt: "I had a gap between [dates] because of [reason]. Help me write a short, honest, confident answer that doesn't apologise or over-explain."
  • Interview question: Why did you leave your last job?
ChatGPT prompt: "I left because [real reason, even if it was redundancy or a bad manager]. Write me an answer that's truthful but doesn't criticise my old employer."
  • Interview question: What's your greatest professional achievement?
ChatGPT prompt: "Here are three things I achieved in my last role: [list with numbers]. Pick the one most relevant to this job and help me turn it into a story with a clear result at the end."

2. Behavioural and STAR questions

  • Interview question: Tell me about a time you failed.
ChatGPT prompt: "Here's a time I failed at work: [describe it plainly]. Build this into a STAR answer that shows what I learned, without making the failure sound too small to matter."
  • Interview question: Describe a conflict with a colleague and how you resolved it.
ChatGPT prompt: "I had a conflict with a colleague over [situation]. Help me shape this into a STAR answer that shows I handled it professionally without throwing them under the bus."
  • Interview question: Tell me about a time you missed a deadline.
ChatGPT prompt: "I missed a deadline because [reason]. Write me a STAR answer that owns the mistake and focuses on what changed afterwards."
  • Interview question: Describe a time you led a team through a difficult situation.
ChatGPT prompt: "Here's what happened when I led my team through [situation]. Turn it into a STAR answer that shows leadership without sounding rehearsed."
  • Interview question: Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager.
ChatGPT prompt: "I disagreed with my manager about [topic]. Help me write an answer that shows I can push back respectfully and still deliver."

3. Role-specific and skills questions

  • Interview question: Why are you a good fit for this role?
ChatGPT prompt: "Compare my CV to this job description line by line and tell me the three strongest matches I should lead with in my answer."
  • Interview question: What's your biggest weakness?
ChatGPT prompt: "Help me pick a real weakness that isn't a disguised strength, and write an answer that shows what I'm doing about it."
  • Interview question: How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?
ChatGPT prompt: "Here's an example of a high pressure period at work: [describe it]. Turn it into a short answer that shows how I stay organised under stress."
  • Interview question: Walk me through your process for [core task in the role].
ChatGPT prompt: "Here's roughly how I approach [task]. Sharpen this into a clear, structured answer with three or four steps I can say out loud."
  • Interview question: What tools or systems do you use day to day?
ChatGPT prompt: "Here's the list of tools I use in my current job. Match them against what this job description mentions and flag any gaps I should be ready to address."

4. Company fit and culture questions

  • Interview question: Why do you want to work here?
ChatGPT prompt: "Here's what I know about [company] from their website and news coverage. Help me build an answer that connects their actual work to my actual career goals, not generic flattery."
  • Interview question: What do you know about our company?
ChatGPT prompt: "Summarise the key facts about [company] I should know before an interview: recent news, products, competitors, and anything notable in the last 12 months."
  • Interview question: How do you handle change or ambiguity?
ChatGPT prompt: "Here's a time my job changed suddenly and I had to adapt: [describe it]. Turn this into a short answer for a 'how do you handle change' question."
  • Interview question: What does your ideal manager look like?
ChatGPT prompt: "Help me write a diplomatic, honest answer about the management style I work best under, based on what's worked and hasn't worked for me before."
  • Interview question: Where do you see yourself in five years?
ChatGPT prompt: "Given this job description and my current goals, help me write an answer that shows ambition without sounding like I'll leave the role in a year."

5. Salary and negotiation

  • Interview question: What are your salary expectations?
ChatGPT prompt: "Here's the salary range I've researched for [role] in [location], and here's what I currently earn. Help me write an answer that gives a range without underselling myself."
  • Interview question: How do I negotiate if the offer comes in lower than expected?
ChatGPT prompt: "The offer came in at [figure], and I was hoping for [figure]. Write me a short, confident script to push back without sounding ungrateful or aggressive."
  • Interview question: What do I say if they ask my current salary?
ChatGPT prompt: "Help me write an answer to a current salary question that redirects to my expectations for this role, since I'd prefer not to anchor on my old pay."
  • Interview question: How do I ask about bonus, equity, or benefits without seeming greedy?
ChatGPT prompt: "Write me three natural ways to ask about total compensation, not just base salary, during a final stage interview."
  • Interview question: How do I counter a lowball offer politely?
ChatGPT prompt: "The offer is [figure] and market rate seems to be [figure] based on my research. Write me an email script countering the offer professionally."

6. Curveballs and stress questions

  • Interview question: Why should we hire you over other candidates?
ChatGPT prompt: "Based on my CV and this job description, what's the specific thing I offer that most candidates for this role probably won't? Help me build an answer around that."
  • Interview question: What's a criticism you've received at work?
ChatGPT prompt: "Here's a piece of real feedback I once got: [describe it]. Help me turn it into an answer that shows self-awareness rather than defensiveness."
  • Interview question: Tell me something about you that isn't on your CV.
ChatGPT prompt: "Here are three things about me outside of work: [list them]. Help me pick the one most likely to make me memorable to this interviewer."
  • Interview question: Describe a time you didn't meet expectations.
ChatGPT prompt: "Here's a time I fell short of what was expected: [describe it]. Write me an honest answer that doesn't sound like a rehearsed weakness question."
  • Interview question: How do you respond to unexpected or trick questions?
ChatGPT prompt: "Give me five unusual or trick interview questions people have been asked for [job title] roles, so nothing catches me off guard."

7. Questions to ask the interviewer

  • Purpose: Understand the team.
ChatGPT prompt: "Write me three smart questions to ask about the team I'd be joining, based on this job description."
  • Purpose: Understand growth and progression.
ChatGPT prompt: "Write me two questions about career progression that don't sound like I'm already planning my exit."
  • Purpose: Understand company culture honestly.
ChatGPT prompt: "Write me a question that will get an honest answer about workload and culture, not a rehearsed HR line."
  • Purpose: Understand what success looks like.
ChatGPT prompt: "Write me a question that asks what success in this role looks like after six months and 12 months."
  • Purpose: Understand the decision timeline.
ChatGPT prompt: "Write me a polite closing question about next steps and timeline that doesn't sound impatient."
