ChatGPT Temporary Chat keeps a conversation out of your chat history, never creates memories and isn't used to train OpenAI's models. Start one by opening a new chat, selecting Temporary and choosing Personalized or Unpersonalized before you send a message. You can save it to keep it; otherwise it's gone when you leave, though OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days.
Temporary Chat is ChatGPT's version of a clean room. You can ask a question, paste in a draft or think something through, and the conversation stays out of your history and isn't used to train OpenAI's models. For a business owner, it's the setting I reach for when a chat involves something I don't want shaping every future answer.
OpenAI changed how it works recently, adding a choice between personalised and unpersonalised chats and an option to save a temporary chat afterwards. This guide follows OpenAI's current help pages, so you know exactly what it does and doesn't do.
What is Temporary Chat in ChatGPT?
A temporary chat is a conversation that doesn't appear in your chat history and isn't used to improve OpenAI's models while it stays temporary. It also never creates or updates memories. When you leave it without saving, it's gone from your view and can't be reopened from your history.
OpenAI's data controls page sums it up in four points: not in your history, no new memories, not used for training, and a copy may be kept for up to 30 days for safety reasons.
How do I turn on Temporary Chat?
- Open a new chat in ChatGPT.
- Select Temporary.
- Choose Personalized or Unpersonalized.
- Send your first message.
The choice in step three matters, and you can't change it once the conversation has started. So decide before you type.
Personalized or Unpersonalized: which should you pick?
| Personalized | Unpersonalized | |
|---|---|---|
| Reads your existing memories | Yes | No |
| Uses your custom instructions | Yes | No |
| Uses plugins | Yes | No |
| Creates or updates memories | No | No |
| Appears in chat history | No | No |
| Used for training | No | No |
Pick Personalized when you want ChatGPT to know your business and writing style but don't want this particular chat remembered. Pick Unpersonalized when you want a completely fresh answer, such as checking how ChatGPT responds to a question without any of your background shaping it.
OpenAI's own pages don't describe the default the same way, so check which option is selected before you send your first message rather than assuming.
Can I save a temporary chat?
Yes. You can save a temporary chat, which turns it into a regular chat. From that point it follows your normal memory and training settings, just like any other conversation. If you leave an unsaved temporary chat, it can't be brought back.
Files work the same way. Files you upload in a temporary chat aren't saved to your Library, unless you save the chat, when eligible files may be saved.
Is Temporary Chat private?
It's more private than a normal chat, but it isn't invisible. Here's what OpenAI says:
- OpenAI may keep a copy of a temporary chat for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
- Temporary chats aren't used for training, whichever personalisation option you choose.
- If you use a GPT that sends data to a third party, that data follows the third party's privacy policy and may be kept longer than 30 days.
- Your account or workspace restrictions override the choice you make for an individual chat.
- For eligible Enterprise customers, temporary chats are available through the Compliance API for 30 days.
For anything sensitive about clients, I'd still strip out names and identifying details before pasting. Temporary Chat reduces what's kept; it doesn't replace common sense. My guide to Claude vs ChatGPT covers how the two assistants compare if privacy is part of your decision.
Temporary Chat vs deleting a chat vs turning off memory
These three settings get mixed up all the time, and they do different jobs. Here's the short version:
| Setting | What it affects | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary Chat | One conversation, from the start | You know before you type that you don't want it kept or remembered |
| Deleting a chat | A conversation that already exists | You've had a normal chat and want it gone from your account |
| Turning off memory | Every future chat | You don't want ChatGPT carrying details between conversations at all |
| Turning off model training | Every future chat | You're happy to keep history but don't want chats used to improve the models |
The useful habit is to decide at the start. If a conversation is going to involve something you'd rather not see resurface, open a temporary chat first. It's far easier than tidying up afterwards, because deleting a chat doesn't automatically remove a saved memory that was created from it.
Temporary Chat also suits people who share a ChatGPT login across a small team, although I wouldn't recommend that setup. Each person having their own account, with a shared Project where they need common files, keeps history and memory where it belongs and makes it clear who asked what.
When should a business owner use Temporary Chat?
- Drafting a delicate message, such as a complaint reply, that you don't want feeding into memory.
- Testing how ChatGPT answers a question about your business without your saved context.
- One-off personal questions on a work account that have nothing to do with your business.
- Brainstorming ideas you're not sure about yet, so they don't colour future suggestions.
- Letting a colleague use your laptop for a quick question without it landing in your history.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
I'm going to paste a customer complaint with the names removed.
Draft a calm, warm reply that apologises for [issue], explains what we'll do next and offers [remedy].
Keep it under [number] sentences and avoid sounding defensive.

Without using anything you know about me, answer this as you would for any small business owner:
[question about your industry].
Then list the three sources of information a buyer would most likely check next.
One more practical point: get into the habit of checking which kind of chat you're in before you paste anything sensitive. The Temporary option sits at the start of a new chat, so the moment to decide is before you type, not halfway through. When I train teams, this is the single habit that does the most to keep client details out of places they shouldn't be, because it turns privacy into a two-second decision instead of a clean-up job later.
What doesn't Temporary Chat do?
- It doesn't delete chats you've already had. For that you need to delete them separately.
- It doesn't create memories, even when personalised.
- It doesn't stop OpenAI keeping a safety copy for up to 30 days.
- It doesn't change your settings for normal chats; those carry on as before.
OpenAI also notes that in rare, high-risk situations, limited safety-relevant context may still be used even with memory and personalisation off.
Tools that work with Temporary Chat
Temporary Chat lives inside ChatGPT on the web and in the apps, and it works with GPTs. Where it fits in a wider workflow is with the tools around it: Google Docs or Word for the final version of anything you draft, a password manager so credentials never go into a chat, and your email client for sending the reply once you've checked it. If your team uses ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, your workspace admin's settings apply on top.

Frequently asked questions
Does Temporary Chat save anything?
It doesn't appear in your history, create memories or train OpenAI's models, but OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
Can I get a temporary chat back?
Only if you save it before leaving. An unsaved temporary chat can't be reopened from your chat history.
Does Temporary Chat use my memories?
Only if you choose Personalized. Unpersonalized temporary chats don't use memories, custom instructions or plugins, and neither mode creates new memories.
Can I switch personalisation on after starting?
No. You choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before your first message, and OpenAI says you can't change it once the conversation has started.
Is Temporary Chat used to train ChatGPT?
No. Temporary chats aren't used for training whichever option you choose. If you save the chat, your normal training setting applies from then on.
