Best Instagram Analytics Tools 2026: 10 Compared, Free and Paid

The short version: Instagram's own Insights tab is enough for most small businesses, and the paid tools (Sprout Social, Iconosquare, Metricool) only earn their fee once you're managing more than one account or need to report to a client. Below is what I found after using all ten, including the one that flattered a client's numbers so much it nearly cost her a rebrand budget.

Why I tested these instead of skimming review sites

Two years ago I had a client, a jewellery brand in Brighton, who was convinced her Instagram was "dying" because her reach had dropped. She'd been staring at one tool's dashboard for months. When I pulled her native Instagram Insights next to that tool's report, the numbers for the same 30 day period differed by close to 40 percent on reach. Same account, same posts, wildly different story depending which screen she looked at.

That's when I stopped trusting any single dashboard and started cross-checking. This list is built from running client accounts and my own through each of these ten tools over the past year, not from reading other people's roundups.

The uncomfortable bit nobody selling analytics software wants you to hear

Most of these paid tools are not measuring anything Instagram doesn't already give you for free. They're pulling from the same Meta Graph API, then wrapping it in a nicer chart. You are frequently paying £50 to £150 a month for prettier PDFs, not new data. That's fine if a client needs a polished report, or if you manage six accounts and can't face six separate app logins. But if it's just you and one business account, the free native Insights probably covers 90 percent of what you'll ever act on.

The 10 tools, compared

1. Instagram Insights (native, free)

Found under your professional dashboard, this is free with any Business or Creator account. It shows reach, profile visits, content interactions, and a follower activity breakdown by hour, which is useful for scheduling. The catch: data only goes back 90 days and you can't export it, you're screenshotting or copying numbers by hand.

Best for: solo founders and small teams who just need to know what's working, without paying for anything.

2. Meta Business Suite (free)

This sits across Instagram and Facebook together and adds a bit more trend context than the app alone, plus it lets you compare post performance side by side. It's still limited to Meta's own 90-day window and the export function is clunky, but if you run both platforms it saves switching apps.

Best for: anyone managing both an Instagram and a Facebook page for the same business.

3. Metricool (free tier, paid from around £14/month)

Metricool's free plan covers one Instagram account with basic analytics and scheduling, and the paid Advanced plan adds competitor tracking and best-time-to-post suggestions across up to 10 profiles. I use this for clients who need to schedule and analyse in one place without paying Sprout Social prices. The interface is a little busier than it needs to be, but the data lines up with native Insights within a few percentage points, which is what you want.

Best for: small agencies and freelancers juggling 2 to 10 accounts on a budget.

4. Later (paid from around £22/month, free trial available)

Later built its name on visual scheduling and the analytics has caught up, with a best-time-to-post feature that pulls from your actual audience's activity rather than a generic average. If you're already using Later to plan your grid and think about how to plan and schedule Instagram posts for consistency, the analytics tab is a natural add-on rather than a separate purchase.

Best for: brands who care about visual consistency and are already paying for Later's scheduling.

5. Sprout Social (from around £199/month for the Standard plan)

Sprout is the one agencies show clients because the reports look like something a board would approve. It covers cross-platform reporting, competitor comparisons, and good sentiment analysis on comments. It is expensive for what a solo business owner needs, and I would not recommend it unless you're billing a client enough to justify the line item.

Best for: agencies and mid-size marketing teams reporting to stakeholders.

6. Hootsuite Analytics (from around £89/month)

Hootsuite's analytics module is solid for cross-platform comparison and custom report building, but I've found their Instagram-specific data lags behind native Insights by a day or two more often than it should. Fine for a weekly report, not great if you need same-day numbers after a launch.

Best for: teams already inside Hootsuite for scheduling who want one login for reporting too.

7. Iconosquare (from around £39/month)

This is the one I'd point a serious single-brand business toward if they want to go beyond free tools. It's built specifically for Instagram and TikTok rather than trying to cover every network, which shows in the depth: hashtag performance, follower growth broken down by source, and story completion rates that native Insights doesn't surface as clearly. It was Iconosquare, incidentally, that flagged the Brighton client's follower spike as coinciding with a giveaway account, not organic interest, which native Insights hadn't made obvious.

Best for: businesses that live and die by Instagram specifically and want depth over breadth.

8. Sotrender (from around £45/month)

Less known in the UK but strong on competitor benchmarking, Sotrender lets you compare your engagement rate directly against named competitor accounts, not just an industry average. Useful if you need to say "we're outperforming X" in a report.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Best for: brands that need competitive benchmarking data for pitches or board reports.

9. Phlanx Engagement Calculator (free)

Not a full analytics suite, just a single-purpose free tool that calculates an account's engagement rate from public data, which makes it handy for vetting influencers before you pay them, or checking your own rate against industry benchmarks (aim for 1 to 3 percent on accounts over 100k followers, higher on smaller ones). I use it as a quick sanity check before any influencer partnership conversation.

Best for: fast engagement rate checks on your own account or a potential collaborator's.

10. Social Blade (free, paid from around £4/month for extra history)

Built originally for YouTube, Social Blade now tracks Instagram follower growth history over time, which almost nothing else does well. If you want to see whether a competitor's follower count has been climbing steadily or jumped suspiciously overnight, this is the tool. The paid tier just unlocks longer historical data.

Best for: competitor and influencer research, spotting bought followers or sudden unexplained spikes.

What I'd pay for, at each stage

  • Just starting out, one account, no budget: native Instagram Insights plus Phlanx for engagement checks. Cost: £0.
  • Small business, one to three accounts, need scheduling too: Metricool or Later. Cost: roughly £15 to £25 a month.
  • Instagram is your primary channel and you want depth: Iconosquare. Cost: around £39 a month.
  • Agency reporting to clients across platforms: Sprout Social or Hootsuite. Cost: £90 to £200 a month.
  • Researching competitors or vetting influencers: Social Blade and Phlanx, both free.

The three numbers I check every week

Regardless of which tool I'm in, I ignore vanity follower counts and check three things: reach on stories versus feed posts (stories usually reach a smaller but more loyal slice, which matters if you're trying to work out who is watching your Instagram stories), saves-to-reach ratio (a post saved by 3 percent of the people who saw it is doing something a like never will), and profile visits from hashtag or explore traffic versus from your own followers. That last one tells you whether you're growing or just talking to the same room.

On hashtags specifically, I'd add a warning: most of these tools will happily show you "top performing hashtags" data that's misleading now, because hashtags may not be working for your business anymore the way they did in 2019. Don't let a dashboard convince you a hashtag strategy is working just because it produces a chart.

Free tools that fill the gaps analytics dashboards leave

None of the ten above tell you much about who your audience is beyond age and location. For that, I lean on separate free tools to understand your audience's interests, and if a client is also active on Pinterest I'll cross-reference against Pinterest user numbers in the UK to see whether the two platforms are reaching the same demographic or two different ones entirely, which changes how you should be splitting content between them.

It's also worth reading what people are searching for around Instagram itself before you pick a tool. I went through 5,282 real Instagram searches for our 2026 study and the volume of questions about "why is my reach down" and "which analytics tool is accurate" told me most business owners are chasing a number the tool can't explain, because the honest answer is usually the algorithm shifted, not that your content got worse.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a paid Instagram analytics tool if I only post a few times a week?

No. Native Instagram Insights, free with any Business or Creator account, gives you reach, engagement, and profile visit data that's enough to make posting decisions at that volume. Pay for a tool once you're managing multiple accounts or reporting to someone else.

Why do different analytics tools show different numbers for the same account?

Most pull from Meta's Graph API but on different refresh schedules and with different date-range definitions, so a "30 day" report in one tool might not align exactly with another's. Differences of 10 to 40 percent aren't unusual, which is why I always cross-check against native Insights before trusting a report.

What's the best free Instagram analytics tool in 2026?

Native Instagram Insights for day-to-day content decisions, plus Social Blade for tracking follower growth history and Phlanx for a quick engagement rate check. Together they cover most of what a small business needs without any subscription cost.

Is a high engagement rate always a good sign?

Not automatically. Check whether saves and shares, not just likes, are driving the number, and check the account isn't inflating followers artificially, which Social Blade's growth history can help you spot. A 5 percent engagement rate built on bought followers is worse than a 2 percent rate on a real audience.
