What People Ask About Instagram in 2026: 5,282 Real Searches Analysed

The short version: 54% of the Instagram searches that reach my site are questions, more than half of all the demand is about Instagram Stories, and a page-one ranking (positions 4 to 10) now gets a click on 0.44% of the times it is shown. This study is built from 5,282 distinct Instagram searches recorded by Google Search Console on my own site over 28 days in August and September 2026. It is what people are asking, what they cannot find an answer to, and where the clicks still are.

Why I ran this

I have written about Instagram since it launched. This year the pattern of traffic to those pages changed: the number of times my pages are shown went up sharply, and the number of clicks did not follow. I wanted the real list of what people are typing in 2026, not a keyword tool's guess, so I pulled every Instagram search that showed one of my pages in Google over 28 days, removed my own test searches, and sorted the rest by theme, by search shape and by where the page ranked. The figures below are shares and rates. The raw counts are mine and stay private.

Finding 1: Stories are more than half the demand and the hardest place to earn a click

Instagram Stories account for 53.9% of every time one of my pages was shown for an Instagram search, from 1,710 distinct searches. The click rate on those searches was 0.21%. Compare that with Reels, at 10.7% of the demand but a click rate of 1.62%, which is 7.7 times higher. The Stories questions are short, factual and answered in the AI box at the top of the results before anyone scrolls: what does reshare mean, what is spotlight, where are story drafts. The Reels questions are more often fixes and how-tos where people still open a page.

Theme Share of distinct searches Share of times shown Click rate
Stories 32.4% 53.9% 0.21%
Notes, Threads, new features 2.6% 17.4% 0.73%
Reels 14.0% 10.7% 1.62%
Posting, captions, hashtags 13.2% 7.7% 0.21%
Views and reach 12.2% 7.6% 2.42%
Followers and unfollowers 15.4% 6.6% 1.18%
Fixes and errors 3.5% 2.6% 0.09%
Privacy and who can see 6.0% 1.6% 0.98%
Money and monetisation 3.0% 1.3% 0.89%
Blocked, hacked, banned 1.0% 0.4% 0.00%
DMs and messages 0.8% 0.2% 0.00%
Profile and bio 0.6% 0.1% 0.00%

Finding 2: the questions people ask most

These are the 25 question-shaped Instagram searches that showed my pages most often, with the average position my page held. Notice how many are about features Instagram added or renamed in the last year: reshares, spotlight, story drafts, trial reels, notes. New features generate a wave of confused searches within days, and the official help pages rarely answer them in the words people use.

  1. what does reshares mean on instagram story (average position 9.9)
  2. what does spotlight mean on instagram (average position 8.5)
  3. what are reshares on instagram story (average position 9.8)
  4. what does reshare mean on instagram story (average position 9.8)
  5. how many reels are there on instagram (average position 8.6)
  6. what is spotlight on instagram (average position 8.1)
  7. how to find story drafts on instagram (average position 8.2)
  8. how to fix instagram not loading (average position 7.6)
  9. what do reshares mean on instagram story (average position 9.8)
  10. what is a reshare on instagram story (average position 10.2)
  11. what is spotlight in instagram story (average position 5.9)
  12. where to find story drafts on instagram (average position 8.9)
  13. what is story spotlight on instagram (average position 7.7)
  14. how to see story drafts on instagram (average position 8.5)
  15. where to find instagram story drafts (average position 8.2)
  16. how to find instagram story drafts (average position 7.6)
  17. what does it mean when someone reshares your story on instagram (average position 10.3)
  18. what is reshares in instagram story (average position 9.1)
  19. what is reshares on instagram story (average position 9.7)
  20. what is spotlight story on instagram (average position 6.2)
  21. what is spotlight in instagram (average position 8.1)
  22. what does spotlight do on instagram (average position 8.1)
  23. where are story drafts on instagram (average position 8.8)
  24. what happens when you spotlight a story on instagram (average position 6.1)
  25. how to get views on instagram (average position 9.1)

Finding 3: page one is not what it was

Positions 4 to 10 carry 69.3% of all the times my Instagram pages were shown, and earn a click 0.44% of the time. Positions 1 to 3 earn 2.89%. Positions 11 to 20 earn 0.56%, which is barely different from page one. In a 2019 study of the same kind, a position 5 result would have expected a click rate of 5 to 8 percent. The gap is the AI Overview, the video carousel and the People Also Ask box that now sit between the searcher and the first organic result on almost every Instagram query.

Position band Share of times shown Click rate
1-3 1.0% 2.89%
4-10 69.3% 0.44%
11-20 11.8% 0.56%
21+ 17.8% 0.30%

Finding 4: the "why is Instagram" searches nobody is answering well

186 of the searches are complaints or errors, and they convert to a click at 0.09%, the lowest of any theme. That is not because people do not want an answer. It is because the results are dominated by forum threads and generic help pages, and the AI answer at the top guesses. These are the most common ones:

  • how to fix instagram not loading
  • why is instagram reels so toxic
  • why is instagram taking so much storage
  • why is instagram suddenly asking for verification
  • why is instagram taking so much storage on iphone
  • why is instagram using so much storage
  • why is instagram asking for my id
  • why is my instagram storage so high
  • why is instagram documents and data so big
  • why is my instagram reel blurry after posting
  • why is my instagram story not sharing to facebook
  • why is my instagram reel blurry all of a sudden
  • why is a person's story unavailable on instagram
  • why is my instagram reel lagging
  • why is my instagram reel lagging when i post

If you write about Instagram, this list is the content gap. Each one needs a page that names the real causes in order, with the exact menu path for the fix on iPhone and Android, and no padding.

My notes on combining a hashtag and a location on Instagram might help.

Finding 5: new features drive the spikes

Searches about Notes, Threads, broadcast channels, collabs, spotlight and trial reels are only 2.6% of the distinct searches but 17.4% of the times my pages were shown. A handful of feature-launch questions generate enormous short-lived demand. The page that answers a new feature in plain words within a week of launch owns that demand for months, because the official help centre lags and the AI box has nothing to summarise yet.

What this means if you rely on search traffic

First, measure clicks, not rankings. A page-one ranking on a Stories question is worth a fraction of a page-two ranking on a Reels fix. Second, answer the question in the first paragraph in the words people type, because that is the sentence the AI box lifts, and the citation is now the prize. Third, build for the searches the AI cannot answer: fixes with device-specific steps, calculators and checkers, and anything that needs the reader's own data. That is why I have spent 2026 building free tools rather than more articles on questions a chatbot answers in two lines.

All of my studies and free tools are listed on the research and tools page.

Method

Source: Google Search Console, search analytics API, query dimension, 28 days ending 8 September 2026, filtered to searches containing "instagram", with my own site-operator searches removed. Themes were assigned by keyword rules on the search text (a search can belong to more than one theme). Search shape "question" means the first word is how, what, why, can, is, does, do, which, who, where, when, will or should. Position bands use Google's average position for the search. Shares are of distinct searches or of total times shown; click rate is clicks divided by times shown. Raw counts are not published. I will re-run this in December 2026 and publish the change.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most searched Instagram question in 2026?

In this dataset it is what reshares mean on an Instagram story, followed closely by what spotlight means. Both are new feature names Instagram introduced without explaining them in the app.

Why is the click rate on Instagram searches so low?

Because most Instagram questions have a one-line factual answer, and Google now shows that answer in an AI Overview above the results, often followed by videos and a People Also Ask box. The searcher gets the answer without clicking.

Which Instagram topics still get clicks?

Reels fixes and views, follower and unfollower questions, and privacy questions all earn clicks at four to ten times the rate of Stories questions, because the answer needs steps or a tool rather than a sentence.

Can I use these figures?

Yes, with a link to this page as the source. The percentages and the question lists are published under a Creative Commons attribution licence. The raw counts are not published.

How often will this be updated?

Quarterly. The next run is December 2026, using the same method, so the change in Stories share and page-one click rate can be compared like for like.
