A CPA exam app puts practice questions, flashcards, simulations or audio review on your phone so you can study in the gaps of a working day. Some are full review courses, some cover one section, and one official app tracks your eligibility and scores. Ten apps follow, in no particular order.
Most CPA candidates are studying around a full-time job, which is why a phone app matters so much. Twenty minutes on a train or a lunch break adds up over a few months, but only if the app gives you the right kind of practice for the section you're sitting.
The ten apps below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the app's own App Store listing, read this week. If you're still weighing the route itself, my guide to becoming an accountant sets out the bigger picture first.
CPA exam apps at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each app's own App Store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the listing names a free app, a free version, a free tier or free content. Trial only means a time-limited trial or preview. Not stated means the listing I read named neither, even where there's a download button, so check the app's own page before you subscribe.

The free official app most candidates forget
Prep apps teach you the material, but they don't run your exam. NASBA, the body that handles applications and score reporting for many state boards, says its CPA Mobile App is free on iOS and Android, and it's the place to check eligibility, application status and your Notice to Schedule.
NASBA also makes a point worth knowing before results day: it doesn't write the CPA Exam or score it, it doesn't receive every score at the same time, and some jurisdictions don't release scores through its website at all. So if a friend has a score and you don't, that's normal, and no prep app can speed it up.

Full course apps versus supplement apps
There are two kinds of app on this list. Course apps sit on top of a review course you've already enrolled in, so they're only useful if you're with that provider. Supplement apps stand alone and fill a gap, such as flashcards, audio notes or quick quizzes.
Most candidates do best with one of each: the course for structure and depth, and a small supplement for the dead time in the day when opening a laptop isn't realistic.
If law is your route instead, see bar exam apps.
Five checks before you download
- Check that the app covers the section you're sitting next, and the current Core and Discipline structure.
- Look for task-based simulations, not only multiple choice, because simulations are part of the exam.
- See whether it works offline, if you study on planes or underground trains.
- Read when the listing was last updated, since exam content changes over time.
- Check how the free trial ends before you start it, so you're not charged by surprise.

My plain advice on CPA exam apps
Get the free NASBA app first, because it's the one that tells you where you stand. Then choose a single prep app that matches your main study method, and use it daily for short bursts rather than in long weekend sessions you'll end up skipping.
And don't let an app replace full practice exams. Phones are brilliant for repetition, but you'll still need timed sessions at a desk before test day. For free extras, my guide to finding free exam study materials is worth a look.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best app for the CPA exam?
There isn't one best app for everyone. Course students should use their provider's app, and self-studiers can pick a stand-alone question bank or flashcard app.
Is there a free CPA exam app?
NASBA says its CPA Mobile App is free on iOS and Android, but it tracks eligibility and scores rather than teaching the material.
Can I pass the CPA exam studying on my phone?
A phone app helps with repetition and quick review, but most candidates still need longer, timed study sessions and full practice exams.
Does NASBA score the CPA exam?
No. NASBA says it doesn't develop or score the CPA Exam, and some jurisdictions don't release scores through its website.
Do CPA apps work offline?
Some do. Several apps on this list say they work offline, which helps on flights and underground trains.
Should I use an app for just one section?
If one section keeps beating you, a single-section app can help you focus, as long as it's up to date with the current exam.
