Hyper-V vs Proxmox: Which Hypervisor Suits a Small Business?

Choose Hyper-V if your servers already run Windows Server: it's built in, needs no extra hypervisor licence and handles Windows, Linux and FreeBSD guests with live migration and high availability. Choose Proxmox VE if you want an open source platform on Debian that runs full virtual machines and lightweight Linux containers side by side, managed from one web interface, with optional paid support.

I read Microsoft Learn's Hyper-V overview and install guide, then Proxmox's product overview, FAQ and support subscription page. The biggest practical difference isn't speed; it's what each one assumes about the rest of your IT.

Why Windows shops pick Hyper-V

Microsoft describes Hyper-V as a type-1 hypervisor that runs directly on the hardware for near-native performance. In Windows Server it brings live migration, high availability and disaster recovery; in Windows 10 and 11 it's a lighter option for development and testing. You add it as a role through Server Manager or one PowerShell command, and VM templates plus PowerShell automation cut deployment time.

One catch from the install guide: other desktop hypervisors that use the same processor features, such as VMware Workstation and VirtualBox, may not start or may run unreliably while the Hyper-V hypervisor is on. Worth knowing before you enable it on a laptop you also use for other virtual machines.

Why home labs and small IT teams like Proxmox VE

Proxmox puts two technologies on one platform: KVM for full Windows and Linux virtual machines, and Linux Containers for lighter workloads that share the host kernel. The FAQ explains that containers carry less overhead but only run Linux guests. Everything is run from a web interface, including clusters and backups.

Support works differently too. Proxmox sells Basic, Standard and Premium subscriptions per CPU socket per year. Basic includes 3 support tickets a year with a next-business-day response, Standard 10 tickets with a 4-hour response, and Premium unlimited tickets with a 2-hour response around the clock. Every plan includes the stable Enterprise Repository updates, and none of them unlocks extra features: the software is the same with or without one.

The detail most people won't guess: Proxmox VE now supports 64-bit ARM, but only on NVIDIA's Grace Hopper and Vera platforms, alongside the usual x86_64 servers. It doesn't run on 32-bit processors at all, though your guests can be 32-bit.

A common follow up question is licensing, which I answer in my explainer on what it costs to run Microsoft's hypervisor.

A quick way to decide

  1. List your guest operating systems. Mostly Windows Server points to Hyper-V.
  2. Decide whether you want containers on the same host. Only Proxmox gives you LXC alongside VMs.
  3. Check who will run it. Windows admins will feel at home with Hyper-V Manager and PowerShell.
  4. Think about support. Proxmox sells it per CPU socket; ask your Microsoft partner how Hyper-V support works for you.
  5. Build a test host with both, move one non-critical VM, and see which you're happier maintaining.

If you're rethinking where your files and servers live, see how cloud storage can change the way you work and how to choose remote support software for your IT team.

My advice on Hyper-V or Proxmox

If your business already pays for Windows Server and your IT person lives in Microsoft tools, I'd use Hyper-V and save yourself a second platform to learn. If you're building on spare hardware, mixing Linux services with a couple of Windows VMs, or want containers and VMs in one place, Proxmox VE is the friendlier fit and it's free to try. Start the support subscription only when the host carries work you can't afford to lose.

Do you make a virtualisation, backup or IT management tool? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place in comparisons like this one.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hyper-V free?

Microsoft says Hyper-V is included with Windows Server and Windows, so there's no separate hypervisor licence to buy.

Is Proxmox VE free?

Yes. Proxmox VE is open source under the GNU AGPL version 3. Support subscriptions are optional and sold per CPU socket.

Can Proxmox run Windows virtual machines?

Yes. Proxmox uses KVM full virtualisation for Windows and Linux images, and LXC containers for Linux-only workloads.

Can I run VirtualBox with Hyper-V turned on?

Microsoft warns that VirtualBox and VMware Workstation may not start or may run unreliably while the Hyper-V hypervisor is running.

What is Proxmox VE based on?

Debian GNU/Linux, using the KVM kernel module and QEMU for virtual machines.
