Bar Exam Apps (2026): 10 Apps for the MBE and NextGen

A bar exam app lets you drill multiple-choice questions, listen to lectures or review rules on your phone while you prepare for the bar, the MBE or the MPRE. Some are full review courses, some are question banks and a few are built for the new NextGen exam. Ten apps follow, in no particular order.

Bar prep is long, and a lot of it happens in small gaps between other things. A good app turns those gaps into practice, whether that's ten MBE questions on the bus or an audio lecture on a walk.

The ten apps below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the app's own App Store listing, read this week. If you're juggling prep with work or family, my tips on balancing study, work and a personal life might help you protect the hours.

Bar exam apps at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each app's own App Store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the listing names a free app, a free version, a free tier or free content. Trial only means a time-limited trial or preview. Not stated means the listing I read named neither, even where there's a download button, so check the app's own page before you subscribe.

Ten bar exam apps worth a look

AdaptiBar

Best for: MBE takers who want licensed questions from the National Conference of Bar Examiners with technology that adapts to how each person answers.

Bar Exam Drills

Best for: Students who need a nudge to practise daily, with a gamified study companion that covers both the NextGen exam and the current Uniform Bar Exam.

Bar Exam Prep - Scrollprep

Best for: Scrollers who'd rather learn from short explanation videos and questions than long lectures, with explanations even for the wrong answers.

BARBRI

Best for: Law students and graduates already using BARBRI who want its legal education resources on a phone between classes or at work.

BarMax

Best for: Students starting with ethics, since the download includes an MPRE course with audio lectures before you decide on the full bar review.

BarPrep: NextGen Bar Exam Prep

Best for: Early NextGen takers who want practice questions built for the new skills-based format across its foundational subjects, described on the listing as completely free.

Crushendo

Best for: Auditory learners who'd rather listen to bar and MPRE material on a walk or drive than read another outline.

Helix Bar Review by AccessLex

Best for: Graduates comparing courses, with a free sneak peek and a free MPRE course from a review designed by a former MBE program director at NCBE.

MBE QBank

Best for: Commuters who want a large bank of MBE-style questions with a written explanation on each answer, all usable offline.

UWorld Legal

Best for: MBE takers who want exam-level questions with detailed answer explanations and adaptive flashcards, plus a free MPRE review in the same app.

Which app for which law graduate

  • You're sitting the NextGen exam: BarPrep: NextGen Bar Exam Prep.
  • You want licensed MBE questions: AdaptiBar.
  • You'd rather listen than read: Crushendo.
  • You're starting with ethics: BarMax or Helix Bar Review by AccessLex.
  • You study on the commute: MBE QBank.

Check which bar exam you're sitting first

This matters more than any app. NCBE, which writes the national parts of the exam, says most jurisdictions are moving from the MBE, MEE and MPT to the NextGen UBE, with the switch running from summer 2026 to summer 2028, and the legacy UBE carrying on until early 2028.

So the first job is to check when your own jurisdiction gives the NextGen exam. If you're sitting the legacy exam, MBE question banks are exactly what you need. If you're sitting NextGen, look for an app that says it was built for the new skills-based format, not one that's simply been renamed.

Question banks, courses and audio apps

Question banks give you volume, and volume is how most people get faster at multiple choice. Course apps add lectures and a plan, but they work best if you've enrolled with that provider. Audio apps are for the time when you can't look at a screen, such as driving or a run.

Most graduates do well with a course or plan for structure, one question bank for daily drilling, and maybe an audio app for the in-between moments.

A simple daily bar prep routine

  1. Do a short timed set of multiple-choice questions every day, even on light days.
  2. Read every explanation, including the ones for questions you got right.
  3. Keep a list of the rules you miss and review it at the end of the week.
  4. Write at least one essay or performance task a week, because apps rarely cover writing well.
  5. Take a full timed practice exam at a desk every couple of weeks.

My plain advice on bar exam apps

Confirm which exam your jurisdiction will give before you download anything, then pick an app built for that exam. Use it for daily question practice, and keep your writing practice on paper or a laptop, because that's where apps are weakest.

Start with the MPRE if it's on your path, since several apps here include free MPRE material. And if you're using AI to help explain rules, my guide to ChatGPT prompts for studying and revision shows how to check its answers against your outline.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best bar exam app?

It depends on your exam. MBE question banks suit the legacy exam, while NextGen takers should look for an app built for the new format.

Is the bar exam changing?

Yes. NCBE says most jurisdictions are moving to the NextGen UBE between summer 2026 and summer 2028, so check your own jurisdiction's date.

Are there free bar exam apps?

A few apps here name free content on their listing, such as a free MPRE course or a free practice app for NextGen.

Can I study for the bar on my phone?

Phones are great for daily multiple-choice practice and audio lectures, but you'll still need to write essays and take timed exams at a desk.

What is the MPRE?

The MPRE is the professional responsibility exam that many jurisdictions require, and several bar apps include MPRE practice.

How many MBE questions should I do a day?

There's no official number. Short daily timed sets, with every explanation read, tend to beat occasional marathon sessions.
