Best CLM Software (2026): 9 Contract Lifecycle Tools

The best CLM software is the one that matches where your contracts get stuck. If renewals slip past you, you'll want a searchable repository and date alerts; if legal is the bottleneck, look for self-serve templates and approval workflows; and only buy full AI review once the basics are working.

Contract lifecycle management sounds like something only big legal departments need. In practice, most small and midsize companies feel the pain long before they have a legal team: a supplier contract auto-renews because nobody saw the notice date, a salesperson sends an old template, or nobody can find the signed version when a client disputes a term.

This list covers repositories, contract automation and full CLM platforms. If you mainly need somewhere to store and track agreements, my guide to contract management software is a good companion, and if signing is the step that slows you down, here's my guide to other e-signature apps.

Contract lifecycle management tools

Agiloft

Best for: Legal teams with unusual approval chains who want a contract system they can configure around their process rather than bend their process around it.

ContractSafe

Best for: Growing companies whose contracts live in inboxes and shared drives, and who mainly need one searchable home with date reminders.

ContractWorks

Best for: Finance and operations leads who keep getting caught by auto-renewals and want every key date flagged before it arrives.

Docusign CLM

Best for: Larger organisations already sending agreements through Docusign who want drafting, workflow and storage joined up with the signing step.

Ironclad

Best for: In-house legal teams handling a heavy flow of commercial agreements who want intake, review and approvals handled in one AI-assisted workflow.

Juro

Best for: Scale-ups where sales and HR keep waiting on legal for routine agreements, and want approved templates they can generate themselves.

LinkSquares

Best for: Companies sitting on years of signed agreements who want key terms extracted and reported without reading every document again.

Oneflow

Best for: Teams who want contracts handled as live digital documents whose details become searchable data rather than static PDFs.

SpotDraft

Best for: Lawyers who spend their day redlining in Word and want AI review, playbooks and approvals without leaving the document.

The five stages a CLM tool should cover

  1. Request: a simple way for sales, HR or procurement to ask for a contract, so requests stop arriving by chat message.
  2. Draft: approved templates and clause libraries, so people start from the right wording every time.
  3. Approve and negotiate: routing to the right approver, tracked changes and a record of who agreed what.
  4. Sign: electronic signature built in or connected, so the signed copy lands back in the system automatically.
  5. Manage: a searchable repository with renewal, notice and obligation dates flagged well before they arrive.

Are electronic signatures valid for contracts?

The Law Commission says electronic signatures are validly used instead of handwritten signatures in transactions every day, and the Government responded to its report in 2020 confirming it agreed with the legal conclusions. For ordinary commercial agreements in England and Wales, signing electronically is normal.

The exceptions are documents with extra formalities. Deeds, and anything that has to be witnessed, need more care, so check how a tool handles witnessing before you rely on it for those. If you work across countries, ask your lawyer which documents still need a wet signature where you trade.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Repository first or full CLM?

A repository with alerts solves the most common problem, missed dates, and you can set one up in an afternoon by uploading what you already have. Full CLM adds request forms, templates, approvals and analytics, which pays off when you're producing a steady stream of new contracts rather than just storing old ones.

Be honest about volume. If you're signing a handful of contracts a month, a repository and good templates will do more for you than a platform your team never fully adopts.

Questions to ask in every CLM demo

  • Can people outside legal request and generate contracts without breaking the templates?
  • How are renewal and notice dates found: automatically, or typed in by hand?
  • Which e-signature tools does it connect to, or is signing built in?
  • How easily can we bulk upload our existing signed contracts?
  • Who can see which contracts, and can we restrict sensitive ones?

The upload question matters more than it looks. A CLM tool without your history is just an empty filing cabinet, so make sure getting your old contracts in is part of the setup, not a project you'll get to later.

Getting sales and HR to use it

A CLM system only works if the people who need contracts use it instead of emailing legal. Make the request form short, put the most common templates at the top and let people generate low-risk agreements, such as standard NDAs, without waiting for approval.

Then keep legal for the contracts that need judgement. When routine paperwork flows through on its own, your lawyers spend their time on the negotiations that matter, and nobody feels the system slowed them down.

Do you make contract lifecycle management software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My advice on choosing CLM software

Start by finding every live contract and its renewal date, even if it's in a spreadsheet. That one exercise tells you how big the problem is and which stage of the lifecycle hurts most, and it's the data you'll load into whichever tool you choose.

Then ask each supplier to show your own messiest contract going through their system, from request to renewal alert. A polished demo contract proves nothing about how it'll cope with yours.

Frequently asked questions

What is CLM software?

CLM stands for contract lifecycle management. It's software that handles a contract from the first request through drafting, approval, signing, storage and renewal.

What's the difference between CLM and contract management software?

Contract management often means storing and tracking signed agreements. CLM usually covers the whole journey, including requests, templates, approvals and signing.

Do small businesses need CLM software?

Not always. Many small businesses get most of the benefit from a searchable repository with renewal alerts and a few approved templates.

Are e-signatures legally binding in the UK?

The Law Commission says electronic signatures are validly used every day in place of handwritten ones. Deeds and documents that need witnessing have extra formalities.

Can AI review contracts in CLM tools?

Several CLM platforms now include AI that flags risky clauses or extracts key terms. A person should still check anything the AI flags before you sign.
