DocuSign Alternatives for Small Businesses and Freelancers (2026)

The right DocuSign alternative depends on how often you sign. Dropbox Sign and Zoho Sign suit small teams and occasional signing, Adobe Acrobat Sign suits businesses that live in PDFs, Google Workspace eSignature suits people already in Google Docs, and PandaDoc and Proposify suit teams that send proposals and want signing built in.

In the US and the UK, an electronic signature is generally accepted for most everyday business contracts. Quotes, service agreements, freelance contracts and NDAs usually fall into that group. Some documents are treated differently, such as certain wills, property documents and court papers, and rules vary by country and state.

I'm not a lawyer, so treat this as a starting point. If a contract is unusual, high value or crosses borders, check with a solicitor or lawyer before you rely on any signing tool. It's also worth asking the tool's provider how it records an audit trail of who signed and when.

If you're drafting your own agreements, my notes on what should be in a consultant contract cover the clauses worth checking before the signing step even starts.

Why people look beyond DocuSign

DocuSign is the name most people know, and it does the job well. People still look around for a few reasons.

  • They only sign a handful of documents and don't want a plan built for a big sales team.
  • They want signing inside a tool they already pay for, so there's one less login.
  • They want proposals, quotes and contracts in one flow, not three tools.
  • They want a simpler screen for clients, who often sign on a phone.

Plans and features change, so I'm leaving out plan details on purpose. Check each provider's current pricing page for limits on documents, templates and team members.

For occasional signing

If you send a few contracts a month, you want something quick that doesn't need training.

  • Dropbox Sign (the tool many people still remember as HelloSign) is a clean, simple signing tool. It suits freelancers, consultants and small teams who want to upload a document, add fields and send. Its limit is that advanced workflows and heavy automation aren't its focus.
  • SignNow is a long-standing option for sending and signing documents, with templates and team features. It suits small businesses that want a straightforward alternative with reusable templates. Its limit is that the interface can feel busier than the simplest tools, so try it with a real document first.

For small teams that want a full suite

  • Zoho Sign is part of the wider Zoho family of business apps. It suits teams already using Zoho CRM or other Zoho tools, because documents can connect to the rest of your setup. Its limit is that it makes most sense inside the Zoho world.
  • Adobe Acrobat Sign sits alongside Acrobat, the tool many offices already use for PDFs. It suits businesses that edit, fill and sign PDFs all day and want everything under one roof. Its limit is that it can be more than a solo freelancer needs.

Signing inside tools you already have

Before you add another subscription, check what your current tools already do.

  • Google Workspace eSignature lets you request a signature from within Google Docs on supported Workspace plans. It suits small businesses that write contracts in Docs. Its limit is that it's lighter than a dedicated signing platform, and availability depends on your plan, so check yours.
  • Adobe Acrobat Sign and Dropbox Sign also plug into tools like Google Drive and Dropbox, which can save a lot of uploading and downloading.

If you use a contract tool for storing agreements, signing is only part of the picture. My guide to the best contract management software explains how to keep track of renewal dates and versions.

Proposals and signing in one flow

Some businesses don't want to send a PDF, wait, then send a contract. They want the client to read the proposal and sign it in the same place.

  • PandaDoc combines document building, quotes and e-signatures, with templates and tracking. It suits sales teams and agencies that send lots of proposals. Its limit is that it's a bigger tool than someone who signs two contracts a year needs.
  • Proposify focuses on proposals, with signing built in. It suits agencies and service businesses that care about how a proposal looks. Its limit is that it's built around proposals, so it's less natural for generic form signing.

One more point on clients. The person on the other end is often busy and signing on a phone between meetings. Choose a tool where they can open the link, check the document, tap to sign and get a copy straight away. Anything that makes them create an account first is friction you don't need, so check how each tool handles that step before you send your first real contract.

How I'd choose

  1. Count how many documents you send in a typical month, and how many people need to send them.
  2. Check what you already own. Google, Microsoft, Zoho and Dropbox users may already have signing options.
  3. Send yourself a test document and sign it on a phone. If it's awkward for you, it'll be awkward for clients.
  4. Check where signed documents are stored and how you export them if you ever leave.
  5. If a contract matters, ask a solicitor or lawyer whether the tool and the document type suit your situation.

Frequently asked questions

Is a DocuSign alternative legally binding?

In the US and the UK, electronic signatures are generally accepted for most business contracts, whichever tool you use. Some document types are excluded, so check with a solicitor or lawyer for anything unusual.

Is there a free alternative to DocuSign?

Several tools offer a free plan or a free trial, and some office suites include basic signing. Plans change often, so check each provider's current plans page for document limits.

What's the easiest e-signature tool for a freelancer?

Dropbox Sign and Zoho Sign are popular picks for light use, and Google Workspace eSignature works if you already write contracts in Google Docs. Try one with a real document before you decide.

Can I send proposals and get them signed in one tool?

Yes. PandaDoc and Proposify are built for proposals with signing included, which saves switching between tools.
