The short version: Instagram chats aren't "transferred" the way people assume, they're tied to your account and re-download automatically when you log in on a new phone, but only if chat history syncing is switched on and only within limits Instagram doesn't advertise clearly. If you've never checked that setting, there's a real chance your DMs vanish the moment you set up the new device.

What happens when you log into Instagram on a new phone

Unlike WhatsApp, which lets you export a full encrypted backup file to Google Drive or iCloud, Instagram stores your direct messages on its own servers and quietly syncs them to whichever device you're logged into. There's no "export chat" button, no backup file you control, and no official way to move chats manually. You log in, you wait, and Instagram decides what comes back.

That's the part most guides skip. People search "how to transfer Instagram chats" expecting a WhatsApp-style process, and it simply isn't that. If you're used to how WhatsApp handles backups and transfers, Instagram will feel frustratingly opaque by comparison.

Step-by-step: moving your Instagram chats to a new phone

  1. Keep your old phone switched on and logged in until the new one is fully set up. Don't wipe the old device first, that's the number one mistake.
  2. On your old phone, open Instagram, go to your profile, tap the three lines in the top right, then Settings, then Account Center.
  3. Check "Message and story controls" under the main Instagram settings and make sure "Chat history" or "Sync across devices" is turned on. This single toggle determines whether your DMs follow you.
  4. On the new phone, download Instagram from the App Store or Google Play and log in with the same username and password.
  5. Open the Direct Messages tab and wait. For accounts with a modest message history (a few hundred conversations), this usually takes under five minutes on wifi. For heavy users with thousands of threads, it can take considerably longer, sometimes over an hour, and Instagram gives you no progress bar.
  6. Don't log out of the old phone until you've confirmed every important conversation has reappeared on the new one. Once you log out everywhere, you lose your only fallback if the sync fails.

A worked example

Say you run a small jewellery brand and most of your sales come through Instagram DMs, customers asking about sizing, custom orders, shipping times. You've got around 400 active conversations. You get a new iPhone, set it up, and the first thing you do is restore your old phone's backup through iCloud, including Instagram's app data, then immediately factory reset the old phone because you're trading it in.

Here's where it goes wrong: iCloud's app backup doesn't restore Instagram's full message history reliably, it's never been designed to. You open Instagram on the new phone, log in, and find maybe 60 of your 400 conversations. The rest simply aren't there because chat sync was never confirmed, and your old phone, your only real backup, has already been wiped. That order someone placed three weeks ago with specific engraving instructions is gone, and the customer has to be asked to repeat themselves.

The fix would have been checking the sync setting first and keeping the old phone alive for 48 hours as insurance. That costs nothing and takes two minutes.

The uncomfortable part nobody mentions

Even when sync works perfectly, Instagram doesn't guarantee it keeps everything forever. Messages older than a certain point, media-heavy threads, and anything sent before you enabled end-to-end encrypted chats can behave unpredictably when you switch devices, especially if you switch between Android and iOS rather than staying on the same operating system. Meta has never published exact retention numbers for DM history the way it has for some other data categories, and support staff will often tell you different things depending on who you reach. If your Instagram DMs are important to your business, running a side folder of screenshots for your five or ten most critical conversations isn't paranoid, it's sensible.

This is different from how WhatsApp handles things, where you can at least see and control your backup. If you've ever had to restore a WhatsApp backup from Google Drive on a new phone, you'll know that process at least gives you a visible file size and a restore progress bar. Instagram gives you neither, you just have to trust it.

What doesn't transfer, no matter what you do

  • Messages from accounts you've since blocked or that have been deactivated
  • Vanish mode messages, which are designed to disappear and were never meant to be permanent
  • Disappearing photos and videos you've already viewed
  • Chats from a secondary Instagram account if you only sync your primary one
  • Group chats where the group itself has been deleted by another member, even if you personally never left it

If you're switching between iPhone and Android

This is where things get shakier. Instagram's sync works best when you're moving between two devices on the same ecosystem. Cross-platform moves (iPhone to Samsung, for example) rely entirely on Instagram's own servers rather than any device-level backup, so the account-level sync toggle matters even more. Log in on the new Android phone, open Direct Messages, and give it time before assuming anything is missing. Pulling down to refresh the inbox a few times helps kick the sync along.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

It's worth comparing this to how business tools in the same family behave. If you've ever had to set up WhatsApp Business on a new phone, you'll know separating personal and business chats before a switch saves a lot of grief later. Instagram doesn't offer that same clean separation unless you're running a dedicated business account with its own login.

What to do before you switch phones, not after

  • Screenshot or export (via copy and paste) any DM containing an order number, address, payment confirmation, or legal detail. Don't trust the sync for anything contractual.
  • Confirm you're logged into the correct account, especially if you manage more than one, before you start the migration, not halfway through it.
  • Update the Instagram app to the latest version on both phones. Old app versions have known sync bugs that Meta rarely documents publicly.
  • If you use Instagram for business enquiries, treat it the same way you'd treat any other client-facing messaging channel, meaning don't rely on a single undocumented sync process for something your income depends on.

When it's worth paying someone to sort it

For most people this is a ten-minute job. But if you're running a business account with years of customer history, a shared team inbox, or compliance requirements around keeping records of customer conversations, it's worth getting real advice on how your messaging stack is set up before you ever need to switch devices. That's exactly the kind of practical, unglamorous process an AI consultant for small business can help map out alongside the rest of your customer communication tools, rather than discovering the gaps the day your phone dies.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer Instagram chats without an internet connection?

No. Instagram's sync happens entirely through its own servers, so you need a stable wifi or mobile data connection on the new phone before any messages will reappear.

Why are some of my Instagram DMs missing after switching phones?

The most common reason is that chat history sync wasn't enabled in Settings before you logged out of the old device, or the old phone was wiped before the sync fully completed on the new one.

Does deleting Instagram and reinstalling it delete your chat history?

Not automatically, since your messages live on Instagram's servers, but reinstalling can trigger sync issues, so it's safer to log in on the new phone first and confirm your chats appear before removing the app from the old one.

Is there an official way to back up Instagram DMs like you can with WhatsApp?

No. Instagram has no user-facing export or backup file for direct messages, which is a real limitation compared to apps that let you save a backup to your own cloud storage.
