What Does the Paper Plane Icon Mean on Instagram?

The short version: the paper plane icon on Instagram is the Send or Share button, it opens Direct Messages so you can send a post, Reel, or Story to someone privately, and you'll see it both as the DM shortcut at the top of your feed and as a share action under individual posts. It has nothing to do with disappearing content or read receipts, that confusion belongs to Snapchat, not Instagram.

Where you'll see the paper plane icon

There are two places this icon shows up, and people mix them up constantly.

  • Top right of your main feed: this is your inbox shortcut. Tap it and you go straight into your Direct Messages, same as tapping the little message bubble on some older versions of the app.
  • Under a post, Reel, or Story: this is the share action. Tap it and Instagram opens a share sheet so you can send that exact piece of content to a friend, a group chat, or post it to your own Story.

Same icon, two jobs. Instagram has never been brilliant about keeping its iconography consistent, and the paper plane is a good example of that. If you've ever confused this with the repost icon with the two arrows, you're not alone, both live in similar areas of the app and both involve pushing content somewhere else.

What happens when you tap it

If you tap the paper plane under a post, here's the actual sequence:

  1. A panel slides up from the bottom showing your recent chats and contacts.
  2. You pick one or more people (Instagram lets you select several recipients at once, useful if you want to send something to three mates in one go instead of forwarding it three separate times).
  3. You can add a short message alongside it, or just hit send with no comment.
  4. The content lands in their DMs as a shared link card, they tap it to open the full post, Reel, or profile.

That's it. There's no notification badge that says "seen and screenshotted," no timer, no disappearing message mechanic. If someone sends you something via the paper plane icon and you open it, Instagram shows them a small "seen" indicator in the chat thread, which some people find more unsettling than they expect. That's worth knowing before you absentmindedly open a share from an ex at 1am and they see you looked.

A worked example

Say you run a small online homeware shop and you post a Reel showing a new ceramic mug range. A customer sees it, taps the paper plane icon under the Reel, and sends it to a friend with the message "this is so you." Her friend opens it, clicks through to your profile, and buys two mugs. That entire transaction, from discovery to sale, started with the paper plane icon, not a comment, not a like, not even a save. This is why I tell small business owners that the share count on a post often matters more than the like count. Likes are vanity, shares are distribution. If your Reels are getting liked but never shared via that paper plane, you've made something pleasant, not something people feel compelled to pass on.

Paper plane vs other Instagram icons

It helps to know what it's not, because Instagram's icon set causes genuine confusion:

  • Heart = like, public, shows up in the likes count.
  • Speech bubble = comment, public, visible under the post.
  • Paper plane = send/share, private, goes to DMs or your own Story.
  • Bookmark/ribbon = save, private, only visible to you in your saved collections.
  • Two arrows = repost, which is a newer, separate feature that posts someone else's content to your own grid or feed with credit attached, covered in this breakdown of the repost icon and how to undo it if you've ever reposted something by accident.

Does it mean they got your message?

One thing that trips people up: tapping the paper plane to send a post is a different action from sending a text message in a chat, but both land in the same DM inbox, which is why people sometimes ask what does DM mean on Instagram in the first place when they're new to the platform. If you want to know whether your message or shared content got through rather than failed to send, check for the usual signs, a "sent" status under the message, and eventually "seen" once they open it. If a message you sent disappears or shows as unavailable, that's a different situation entirely, usually linked to the sender deleting it or unsending it, which looks different again and is covered in detail if you've ever wondered what an unsent message looks like on Instagram.

The uncomfortable bit nobody mentions

Most explainer posts on this topic stop at "it means share," job done. What they don't say is that the paper plane icon is one of the clearest signals Instagram gives you about what the algorithm rewards, and it's not what most creators think. Instagram has said publicly, repeatedly, that shares (via that icon) and saves are weighted more heavily in distribution than likes or comments, because a share is a stronger signal of value than a passive tap of a heart. So if you're a business owner obsessing over your like count and ignoring your share count, you're reading the wrong number. I'd rather see a Reel with 40 likes and 25 shares than one with 400 likes and 3 shares, the first one is travelling, the second one is just sitting there looking popular. That's an uncomfortable truth for anyone who's been chasing vanity metrics for years and suddenly has to admit the number they've been proudest of was never the one that mattered.

How to use it deliberately if you run a business account

If you post content for a brand or a small business, don't treat the paper plane as something that just happens to you. Build it into how you plan content:

  • End Reels with a direct line that prompts a send, something like "tag someone who needs this" or "send this to the friend who's always late."
  • Check your Instagram Insights under each post for the "Shares" metric specifically, it's usually sitting right next to saves and reach, and most people never click into it.
  • If a piece of content gets shared a lot but doesn't convert to followers or sales, that tells you the content is entertaining but not building your brand, which is a different problem worth solving separately.

If you're trying to work out what's moving the needle across your whole content strategy rather than just this one icon, it's worth getting real AI consultant for small business support to look at your engagement data rather than guessing from icon counts alone.

A quick note on Stories and Reels specifically

The paper plane shows up slightly differently depending on content type. On Stories, tapping it (or swiping up, depending on your app version) opens the same send panel, and you can also use the sticker version to let your audience reply directly. On Reels, the icon sits in the right-hand column alongside the heart, comment bubble, and bookmark, stacked vertically, which is the same layout used across most of the Reels icons worth knowing if you're new to the format. Instagram borrowed a lot of its iconography logic loosely from Snapchat's symbol system, though the two platforms don't mean the same things by similar-looking icons, which is a separate rabbit hole covered in a full guide to Snapchat symbols on Stories if you use both apps and keep getting them muddled.

Frequently asked questions

Does the paper plane icon mean someone sent you a disappearing message?

No. That's a Snapchat concept. On Instagram, the paper plane is simply the send or share button, content sent through it stays in your DMs until someone deletes it, there's no automatic disappearing feature attached to it.

Can the other person see I opened what they sent?

Yes, typically. Once you open a shared post or Reel sent via DM, the sender usually sees a "seen" marker in the chat thread, similar to reading a normal message.

Why would I tap the paper plane instead of the comment button?

Comments are public and visible to anyone viewing the post. Tapping the paper plane sends it privately to a specific person or group, which is what you want if you're recommending something to a friend rather than reacting publicly.

Does sharing through the paper plane icon help a post's reach?

Yes. Instagram treats shares as a strong engagement signal, often weighted more heavily than likes, because it shows someone valued the content enough to pass it on rather than just reacting to it.
