Pinterest Monetization Requirements for Creators in Ghana

The short version: Pinterest's own in-app monetization tools, things like Creator Rewards and ad revenue share, are only switched on for a short list of countries, and Ghana is not currently on that list. That doesn't mean you can't earn money through Pinterest. It means your money has to come from somewhere other than Pinterest itself, through affiliate links, your own products, or traffic you send to a blog or shop.

What Pinterest's monetization programmes require

Pinterest has built a few different routes for creators to get paid directly on the platform. The two most talked about are Creator Rewards (where Pinterest pays you for hitting idea pin engagement goals) and the ad revenue share tests Pinterest has been running with select creators. Both of these have eligibility rules that go beyond follower count. You typically need to be in an approved country, have an account that's been active for a minimum period (Pinterest has asked for 90 days of posting history in past versions of the programme), be over 18, have a business account linked to a website or domain you control, and follow Pinterest's Creator Code and Community Guidelines without recent strikes.

The bit that trips people up is the country list. Pinterest rolls these programmes out market by market, and historically that has meant the US first, then the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France and a handful of others. Ghana, along with most of Africa, hasn't been part of these rollouts. I'd check Pinterest's official creator help pages directly before you build a strategy around any of this, because these lists do shift, but as things stand in 2026, a creator based in Ghana cannot simply apply for Creator Rewards or ad revenue share the way someone in Manchester or Melbourne can.

The uncomfortable bit nobody tells you

A lot of "how to monetize Pinterest" content treats the whole world as if it has access to the same buttons. It doesn't. If you're in Ghana and you've spent months building a beautiful Pinterest profile hoping Pinterest itself will eventually pay you for views, you're waiting for a door that might not open for your country for years, if ever. That's not meant to be discouraging, it's meant to save you time. The creators making money from Pinterest while based in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya or anywhere else outside the approved list aren't getting paid by Pinterest. They're using Pinterest as a free traffic engine and getting paid by someone else entirely, an affiliate network, Etsy, their own online shop, Amazon Associates, or their own digital products.

That's a completely workable business model. It's just a different one from "join the Pinterest creator fund," and most articles on this topic blur the two together.

What you can monetize right now, from Ghana

  • Affiliate marketing through networks that accept Ghanaian members, such as Amazon Associates (via a US or UK storefront link), CJ Affiliate, Awin, or direct affiliate programmes run by individual brands. You pin product images and ideas, link out to your affiliate link, and earn commission on sales, typically 3 to 10 percent on physical goods, higher on digital products and courses.
  • Your own digital products. Printables, planners, Canva templates, ebooks, or online courses sold through Gumroad, Payhip, or Selar, which is widely used across West Africa and handles mobile money payouts well suited to Ghana. Pinterest is strong at sending traffic to this kind of product because pins work like evergreen search ads for exactly the kind of visual, how-to content that sells templates and planners.
  • A blog with display ads. If you build a WordPress site and run Google AdSense or apply to Mediavine or Raptive once you hit their traffic thresholds (Mediavine typically wants 50,000 monthly sessions, Raptive around 100,000 pageviews), Pinterest can be your main traffic source feeding those ad impressions.
  • Services and freelance work. Pinterest profiles for graphic designers, wedding planners, interior stylists and similar visual trades regularly bring in client enquiries, because people searching Pinterest are often in buying or planning mode already.
  • Your own shop. If you sell physical products, jewellery, clothing, home decor, art, Pinterest drives shoppers to Etsy listings or a Shopify store better than almost any other free channel going, because the platform is built around saving things to buy later.

A worked example

Say you run a small print-on-demand shop from Accra selling African-pattern phone cases and tote bags through Printify, connected to an Etsy storefront. You can't apply for Pinterest ad revenue share because Ghana isn't on the approved list, so you stop chasing that entirely. Instead you create 15 pins a week, each one a clean product photo with a text overlay like "Ankara Print Tote Bag Ideas for Summer," linking straight to your Etsy listing. You use Pinterest's free scheduling inside the app rather than paying for a third-party scheduler. Within three months of consistent pinning, a realistic target for a small, well-niched shop like this is 500 to 2,000 monthly sessions arriving from Pinterest to your Etsy store, converting at Etsy's typical 2 to 3 percent, which at an average order value of $18 could mean somewhere between 10 and 60 sales a month directly traceable to Pinterest traffic. None of that money comes from Pinterest. All of it comes from Etsy, because Pinterest did the one job it's good at: sending interested browsers somewhere they can buy.

Step by step: setting up to earn via Pinterest from Ghana

  • Convert your account to a free Pinterest Business account, not a personal one, this opens up analytics and the ability to add a verified website.
  • Claim and verify a website, whether that's your Etsy shop, your Gumroad page, or a WordPress blog, so Pinterest attributes traffic correctly and you can see what's working.
  • Pick one monetization route to start, affiliate, digital product, or shop, rather than trying all four at once. Focus beats spread when you're starting from zero.
  • Create 10 to 15 pins a week minimum. Pinterest rewards consistency far more than virality, unlike Instagram or TikTok.
  • Use Pinterest Trends (free, inside the app) to check what's being searched before you design pins, rather than guessing.
  • Track clicks through to your linked website using the Pinterest analytics dashboard and whatever analytics your shop or blog platform offers, and cut what isn't converting after 60 days.
  • Reinvest early affiliate or product income into one Pinterest ad campaign once you've proven organic traffic converts, because paid promotion on Pinterest is available in Ghana even though Creator Rewards isn't.

Why Pinterest ads work in Ghana even when creator payouts don't

This is worth separating out because people conflate the two. Pinterest's advertising business, where you pay Pinterest to promote your own pins, is available far more widely than its creator payout programmes. So while Pinterest won't pay you for your content from Ghana, you can pay Pinterest to boost your product pins or blog links, and that's a perfectly normal route plenty of small shop owners use once they've got a product or offer worth promoting. It's the inverse relationship most "how to monetize Pinterest" guides never mention.

What to watch for as the landscape changes

Pinterest has expanded its creator monetization footprint before, adding countries gradually as ad demand and user numbers in those markets grow. Ghana's Pinterest user base is smaller than markets like the US or UK, which is part of why it hasn't been prioritised for payout programmes yet. That could change. Keep an eye on Pinterest's official Creator Fund and Creator Rewards pages every few months rather than relying on blog posts (including this one) to stay current, because eligibility lists are exactly the kind of detail that gets updated without much announcement.

Frequently asked questions

Can creators in Ghana join Pinterest Creator Rewards?

Not currently. Creator Rewards and Pinterest's direct ad revenue share programmes are limited to a specific list of approved countries that has not included Ghana, so applying from a Ghana-based account won't get you accepted even with strong engagement.

How do Ghanaian creators make money on Pinterest then?

By using Pinterest purely as a free traffic source and earning through affiliate links, their own digital products sold via Gumroad, Payhip or Selar, a shop on Etsy or Shopify, blog display ads, or client enquiries for visual services. The income comes from those platforms, not from Pinterest itself.

Do I need a certain number of followers before Pinterest sends traffic?

No. Pinterest works more like a search engine than a social feed, so a pin with good keywords and a clear image can get clicks from strangers with zero followers, as long as it matches what people are searching for.

Is it worth paying for Pinterest ads if I'm based in Ghana?

Yes, if you already have a product, shop, or digital offer that's converting organically. Pinterest advertising is available far more broadly than its creator payout programmes, so you can promote your own pins even while being excluded from the direct monetization schemes.
