When you unsend a message on Instagram, it disappears from the chat for both of you. The other person may see a small note saying a message was unsent, but the wording and whether it shows can vary between app versions. The text, photo or voice note itself is gone.
So if you're on the receiving end and a message suddenly vanished, that's almost certainly what happened. The sender took it back. Here's how it works, what the other person can and can't still see, and how it differs from a plain delete.
How to unsend a message on Instagram
The steps are the same for text, photos, voice notes and reels shared in a chat. Menu words may differ a little on your version, so if you can't see Unsend, press and hold the message and look at what options appear.
- Open Instagram and tap the message icon (the paper plane) to go to your inbox.
- Open the chat that has the message you want to take back.
- Press and hold the message. On some versions you tap and hold; on others a small menu pops up.
- Tap Unsend from the options.
- Confirm if the app asks you to. The message disappears.
You can only unsend your own messages. You can't unsend something another person sent you. If you want to tidy up an old chat instead, I've written about how to delete old Instagram direct messages.
What does an unsent message look like?
On your side, it just goes. The bubble is removed from the chat. On the other person's side, it's usually the same: the message is gone from the thread. Some versions of Instagram show a small grey line saying a message was unsent, so the person knows something was there. The exact words vary, and I wouldn't rely on seeing the same thing every time.
What you won't see is the old content. Once it's unsent, the text, image or voice note isn't visible to either of you in the chat.
Can the other person still see it?
Mostly no, but there are a few ways they might already have caught it. Be honest with yourself about these before you rely on unsend.
- Notification previews. If the person's phone showed a preview on the lock screen, they may have read the message before you took it back. Unsending doesn't remove a preview they've already seen.
- They were looking at the chat. If they had the thread open when you sent it, they saw it live.
- Screenshots. Anyone can capture a message before you unsend it. I've explained what Instagram does and doesn't do about this in my guide on whether Instagram tells people about screenshots in DMs.
- Email or other alerts. Depending on their settings, they may have been notified in another way.
- Someone else's device. If you sent it to a group, other members may have seen it too.
The sensible way to think about it: unsend is a good tool for a typo, a wrong chat or a message you regret. It isn't a guarantee that nobody saw it.
Unsend vs delete for you
These two sound alike and do different things. In some versions the second option is labelled Delete for you, and in others you may see slightly different wording.
| Option | Who it affects | What the other person sees | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unsend | Both sides of the chat | The message disappears, with a possible note that a message was unsent | You sent something by mistake or changed your mind |
| Delete for you | Only your own view of the chat | Nothing changes for them; the message stays | You want to clear your own screen but don't mind them keeping it |
| Delete the whole chat | Only your inbox | They still have their copy of the conversation | You want a clean inbox |

If a message vanished from your chat
Seeing a message disappear can feel odd, especially if you only caught a glimpse of it. A few things are worth knowing.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- It was almost certainly the sender. Unsending is the usual reason a message vanishes from a thread, so it doesn't mean your app is broken.
- You can't bring it back. There's no button for restoring an unsent message, so if it mattered, ask the person to send it again.
- It's fine to ask, kindly. A simple "did you mean to send something else?" keeps things friendly.
- Check your connection if several messages vanish. If lots of messages disappear at once, close the app and open it again, or update it, in case the chat simply hasn't refreshed.
Everyone sends the wrong thing now and then. Treating an unsent message as no big deal is usually the kindest reaction.
Unsent vs edited messages
Instagram has also introduced editing for messages you've sent, for a short time after sending. An edited message stays in the chat and normally carries a small label saying it was edited, so the other person knows it changed. An unsent message is removed completely.
So if you spot a typo, editing may be enough, and it keeps the conversation flowing. If you sent the wrong thing to the wrong person, unsend is the better choice. Whether you can edit depends on your app version and how recently you sent the message, so check what appears when you press and hold.
A bit of DM etiquette
- Pause before you send. Reread anything sent in anger. A few seconds beats an apology.
- Don't unsend to dodge a conversation. If you said something hurtful, taking it back doesn't undo how it landed. A short, honest apology works better.
- Be kind about other people's unsent messages. If someone takes one back, you don't need to ask what it said. Most of the time it was a slip.
- Never rely on unsend for private information. Don't send passwords, bank details or anything you'd hate to see forwarded.
- Check the chat before you press send. Group chats and similar names are easy to mix up.
Frequently asked questions
What does an unsent message look like on Instagram?
The message disappears from the chat on both sides. The other person may see a small note that a message was unsent, though the wording can vary by version.
Does the other person get a notification when I unsend?
I'm not aware of Instagram sending a separate alert for it. They may still have seen the original message if a preview showed on their phone.
Can I unsend a message after a long time?
It depends on your version of the app. Press and hold the message, and if Unsend appears, it's available. If it doesn't, you may only be able to delete it for yourself.
Is unsending the same as deleting a chat?
No. Unsend removes one message for both people. Deleting a chat only clears it from your inbox, and the other person keeps their copy.
Can I unsend photos, voice notes and reels?
Usually yes. Press and hold the item and look for Unsend, the same as with text.
