Best Security Cameras Without a Subscription (2026): 10 Brands

A security camera without a subscription keeps its video somewhere you own: a microSD card in the camera, or a recorder with a hard drive, which several brands here call an NVR. Some brands say on their own pages that no plan is needed, and some also sell a cloud plan alongside. Check where the footage goes and which features need a plan before you buy.

It's easy to buy a camera, set it up and only then find that the recordings sit behind a monthly plan. If you'd rather keep your footage without one, the question to ask is where the video ends up.

This list covers ten brands whose own pages describe local storage or no monthly fees, read on 1 Nov 2026 (as of Nov 2026). It's alphabetical and in no particular order. Nothing here is a promise that a camera will stop a break-in, and where a brand also sells a cloud plan, I've said so.

Ten camera brands and where they store your video

Abode

Best for: A system the maker says works out of the box with no subscription required, including live video, though its page ties recorded clips and smart detection to its Standard plan.

Annke

Best for: Choosing a wireless outdoor camera whose listing names cloud and up to 128 GB local storage, or a PoE, NVR or DVR system from its menu.

eufy

Best for: Footage the maker says is encrypted and stored on your security device or sent to a HomeBase, on a page it titles Local Security with No Monthly Fees.

Lorex

Best for: U Series wired systems and V Series systems under a No Monthly Fees banner, though its page also lists a separate Connect Cloud+ subscription, and hard drives as accessories.

Reolink

Best for: Recording to a microSD card of up to 512 GB or to a compatible NVR from the same brand, as its RLC-510A camera page describes.

Swann

Best for: Wired security systems, Wi-Fi NVRs and Wi-Fi cameras from a brand that says all its products are yours to own with no ongoing fees.

Tapo

Best for: Recording to a microSD card in the camera, which the C200 page says holds up to 128 GB, equal to 384 hours of footage by its count.

Ubiquiti UniFi

Best for: Running AI and recording on your own local UNVR or Enterprise NVR, which the page says eliminates cloud fees and subscriptions.

Wyze

Best for: Local storage on a microSD card of up to 256GB, as the Cam v4 spec lists it, while the same spec says the cloud option needs a subscription plan.

Zosi

Best for: Kits that pair 4K PoE cameras with an NVR and a 2TB hard drive, as the kit names on its shop page list them.

Three ways to skip the monthly plan

Here's what's easy to miss: 'no subscription' means different things on different pages. Some cameras record to a card inside them. Reolink stores recordings 'locally and securely on a microSD card of up to 512 GB', and Tapo's C200 'locally stores up to 128 GB on a microSD card'. Some send video to a recorder you keep: on the Ubiquiti UniFi page, UniFi Protect records on 'your local UNVR or Enterprise NVR', and Zosi sells kits with an NVR and a 2TB hard drive.

And some brands simply state it. eufy's page is titled 'Local Security with No Monthly Fees', Swann says 'no ongoing fees', and Abode says it 'works out of the box with no subscription required'.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • microSD card: the camera records to a card inside it, up to the size the brand states.
  • NVR or hard drive: the cameras record to a box with a drive that stays in your home.
  • A brand's own statement: the page says no subscription, no monthly fees or no ongoing fees, in its own words.

Where a cloud plan still comes in

No-subscription doesn't always mean no plan exists. Lorex shows a 'No Monthly Fees' banner and, on the same page, a separate Connect Cloud+ subscription. Wyze's Cam v4 spec lists 'Local (microSD card required)' beside 'Cloud (with subscription plan)'. And one brand that says no subscription is required still ties recorded clips and smart detection to a plan, while live video works without one.

None of that is a problem if you go in knowing it. It just means the question isn't 'does this camera need a subscription?' but 'which features need one?'

Cards and drives to sort out first

A camera that records locally needs somewhere to record. Annke's outdoor camera listing mentions 'Cloud & Max. 128 GB Local Storage'. Before you order, check whether a card or drive comes in the box, how large a card the camera takes, and what the brand says happens when it's full.

Questions for a camera without a monthly plan

  1. Where does the video go: a microSD card, an NVR or a hard drive?
  2. Is the card or drive included, or do I need to add one?
  3. Which features does the brand tie to a plan, such as recorded clips or smart detection?
  4. Does the brand also sell a cloud plan, and would I want it?
  5. Wired, PoE or Wi-Fi: what suits where the camera will go?
  6. Can I watch live video from my phone without a plan?

My advice on cameras without a monthly plan

Decide where you want your footage to live, then shop for that. For one or two cameras, a camera with a microSD slot keeps things simple. For a whole house, a kit with an NVR and a hard drive keeps the recordings in one box. Either way, read the brand's own page on what needs a plan, and treat any security wording as the brand's description, not a promise.

Frequently asked questions

Can a security camera work without a subscription?

Yes, according to several brands here. Some record to a microSD card in the camera, some record to an NVR with a hard drive, and some say on their own pages that no subscription is required.

Where does the footage go without a cloud plan?

On the pages here, it goes to a microSD card inside the camera, or to an NVR or hard drive at home. One brand says its footage is encrypted and stored on your security device or sent to a HomeBase.

How much footage does a microSD card hold?

It depends on the card and the camera. One brand says a 128 GB card equals 384 hours of footage for its camera, and others state the largest card they take, from 128 GB to 512 GB. Those are the brands' own numbers.

Do any of these brands also sell a cloud plan?

Yes. One brand's page lists a cloud subscription alongside its local systems, and another lists cloud storage with a subscription plan next to local storage. A third ties recorded clips and smart detection to a plan.

Which of these cameras record to an NVR?

Several brands here list NVRs. One sells kits with an NVR and a 2TB hard drive, one records on your local UNVR or Enterprise NVR, and others list Wi-Fi NVRs or connecting a camera to a compatible NVR.

Do I need a hard drive for a camera without a subscription?

Not always. Some cameras here record to a microSD card instead. If you choose an NVR system, check whether a hard drive comes in the kit: one brand's kits list a 2TB hard drive, and another sells hard drives as accessories.
