The best subscription box for you depends on two things: how often it arrives and who chooses what's inside. Some boxes come monthly, some every other month and some each season, and some let you pick your items while others are chosen for you by a quiz or a stylist. Settle those two, then pick the category you love.
A box on the doorstep that's just for you is a lovely thing, whether it's skincare, a new novel or a few clothes someone else picked out. What's less obvious is that these boxes differ more in how they work than in what's inside.
This list covers ten boxes across beauty, books, wellness and style, using what each company's own website says, read on 1 Nov 2026 (as of Nov 2026). It's alphabetical and in no particular order. I've left out every first-box offer, code and 'worth' claim, and kept to how often each box arrives and who picks what's in it.

Book of the Month

FabFitFun

Glossybox

IPSY

Love Goodly
Best for: Getting a box every other month in Essential or VIP versions, which the company says are always vegan, with no animal-derived ingredients and no animal testing.
OwlCrate
Best for: Picking monthly YA fantasy book-and-goodies boxes or book-only plans, or quarterly romantasy, romance and horror subscriptions.
Stitch Fix
Best for: Taking a style quiz and matching with what the company calls your (human!) stylist, who sends a Fix box chosen for your size and style.
How often the box turns up
This is the first thing to settle, and the pages differ more than you'd think. Glossybox sends '5 beauty products to try each month'. Love Goodly arrives 'every other month'. Alltrue's box comes 'every three months', and FabFitFun works on seasons, letting you 'select your products' each time. OwlCrate runs 'quarterly subscriptions' beside its monthly ones, and IPSY adds 'a quarterly box curated to your wellness goals'.
- Monthly: a new box each month, from beauty to books.
- Every other month: six boxes a year on the company's schedule.
- Seasonal or quarterly: four boxes a year, and one seasonal box lets you pick your products.
You pick, a quiz picks, or a stylist does
The second split is who chooses. Birchbox lets you 'choose the products you want, or let us build a box that's tailored just for you'. Stitch Fix pairs you with what it calls your '(human!) Stylist' after a style quiz, and its page also says 'No subscription required'. Book of the Month sends a shortlist of new fiction every month and says that if a month doesn't catch your eye, you can skip it.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
If you hate surprises, the boxes where you pick your items will suit you better. If you love them, a quiz or a stylist takes the deciding off your plate.
Book boxes for readers
Three boxes here are for readers. Along with the two above, FairyLoot, a UK site, lists YA, adult, romantasy and cosy fantasy plans, some on a set day each month and some every third month, and it shows a waitlist on several of them. If you're after a book box, check whether the plan you want is open before you get your heart set on it.
Before you sign up for a box
- How often do I want it: monthly, every other month or each season?
- Do I want to choose the items, or be surprised?
- Can I skip a box or cancel online?
- Does the company ship to my country?
- Is it a gift, or a treat for me?
- Will I use everything that turns up?
Do you make a subscription box? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My advice for choosing a subscription box
Pick the rhythm before the theme. If you love a little treat every month, a monthly beauty or book box suits that. If you'd rather have a bigger moment now and then, look at the seasonal and every-other-month boxes. And if you hate surprises, choose one where you pick the items yourself. Whatever you choose, find the skip and cancel options before you sign up.
If a book box is your thing, my book club questions will get the conversation going. And for a different kind of me-time, see my list of sleep apps for busy women.

Frequently asked questions
How often do subscription boxes for women arrive?
It depends on the box. On this list, some arrive monthly, one every other month, and some every season or every three months. One book box offers both monthly and quarterly plans.
Can I choose what goes in my box?
Some boxes let you. One lets you choose the products you want or have a box built for you, and another lets you select your products every season. Others are chosen for you by a quiz or a stylist.
Can I skip a month?
Some services say you can. One book club says that if a month doesn't catch your eye, you can skip it. Check the skip and pause terms on any box before you sign up.
Are there book subscription boxes on this list?
Three boxes here are for readers: a monthly book club with a shortlist of new fiction, a UK fantasy book subscription with several plans, and a book box with monthly fantasy and quarterly romance and horror subscriptions.
Is there a clothing box on this list?
One: a clothing box where a stylist picks pieces after a style quiz. Its page also says no subscription is required.
Are there vegan or eco-friendly boxes?
Two describe themselves that way. One says its boxes are always vegan, with no animal-derived ingredients and no animal testing, and another sends ethical and eco-friendly products each season.
