Captions App Review: AI Credits, iOS Prices and the Free Tier

Captions is an AI video app that suits short-form creators on iPhone who want AI edits, generated clips and help cutting long videos into posts. The catch, as of Oct 2026, is that its listed prices are for iOS plans only, and the free tier has no AI usage credits, so AI generation starts on Max.

A search for a Captions app review usually comes from someone with a phone full of footage, wondering whether the free version will do or the paid plans are needed. I read the Captions pricing page, including the small print at the bottom, and that small print is where the most useful detail sits.

Prices are as of Oct 2026 and the page shows them as monthly figures without naming a billing period beyond that. Check the vendor's pricing page before you buy, on the device you'll pay from.

The iOS footnote on the Captions page

At the bottom of Captions' pricing page there's a line that's easy to scroll past: all prices are displayed in US dollars, and features and prices reflect iOS plans only. So the figures above are the iPhone plan prices. The page doesn't say what you'll pay anywhere else, and I'm not going to guess.

If you edit on an iPhone, the table is your guide. If you'd pay from a different device, look at the price there before you commit, because this page can't confirm it.

What the free tier leaves out

The second detail is in the comparison row for AI usage credits. Free shows None, Max shows Medium and Frontier shows High. In plain terms, the free tier is for traditional video editing and the teleprompter. The AI tools at the heart of Captions, like generating footage, AI actors and generated B-roll, run on credits, and the free tier doesn't have any.

Max is the first plan with AI credits, at 500 a month. Frontier lifts that to 1,400, Frontier 2x to 2,800 and Frontier 4x to 5,600. The page doesn't say how many credits a single video uses, so I can't tell you how many videos 500 credits makes. What I can say is that the credit step, not the feature list, is the main difference between the paid tiers, since all of them include everything in Max.

What you can make with Captions

On the Max plan, Captions lists a library of curated AI Edit styles, creating a fully produced video with AI, digital twins or custom AI actors, and a chat-based editor that handles changes for you. It'll also turn a long video into a batch of post-ready clips and generate custom B-roll, music, sound effects and images. The Frontier tiers add more usage on top so you can make more videos a month. If captions on your clips are the main thing you're after, I've covered AI auto captions and translations separately, and there's a roundup of video editing apps for Reels and TikTok too.

Who Captions suits and who should skip the app

  • It suits short-form creators on iPhone who want AI edits and generated clips.
  • It suits anyone who turns long videos into a stream of short posts.
  • It suits creators who can plan their month around a fixed credit allowance.
  • Skip it if you need the price on another device confirmed before you sign up.
  • Skip it if you want AI generation without paying, because the free tier has no AI credits.
  • Skip it if you only need plain trimming and captions, which the free tier's traditional editing may already cover.

My verdict on Captions

I'd start on the free tier if you mainly want traditional editing and the teleprompter, because that's what it's for. The day you want AI actors, generated B-roll or long videos cut into clips, you're looking at Max, and I'd stay there until you're regularly running out of 500 credits before the month ends. I'd only move up to a Frontier tier once that happens. And if you're not on an iPhone, I'd check the price where you'll pay first, because Captions' own page says its figures are for iOS plans only.
