How to Sell on TikTok Shop: Become a Seller in the US or UK

To sell on TikTok Shop, you register in TikTok Shop Seller Center for your country, verify your identity or business, add your tax, bank and warehouse details, upload at least one product, then link one official TikTok account. In the US you must be 18 or over and live in the US; in the UK an individual seller registers as a sole trader with a UK passport or UK driving licence. Check every detail before you submit, because TikTok says business and personal information can't be changed afterwards.

If you've searched "TikTok seller" you probably want one of two things: the Seller Center login, or a plain explanation of how to become a seller in the first place. This guide is the second one. It's based on TikTok Shop's own seller academy pages for the US and the UK, so the rules are theirs, not guesses.

A quick word on who this is for. Selling on TikTok Shop means listing your own products. If you'd rather promote other people's products, that's the affiliate route, which works differently and has its own sign-up.

The five stages TikTok lists from sign-up to first sale

TikTok's US registration guide splits the journey into five stages. The UK flow follows the same shape, with UK documents.

  1. Sign up. Create a Seller Center account with your phone number or email, or log in with your TikTok account. Set your region to the country you'll sell in.
  2. Verify. Choose your business type and submit identity or business documents.
  3. Tax details. Add the tax information TikTok Shop collects for your business type.
  4. Products and logistics. Add your warehouse and return addresses, then upload your first product.
  5. Link your official account. Connect the TikTok account that will be the face of your shop.

TikTok says only two of these are required to get going: verifying your documents and uploading one product. Your products stay hidden from shoppers until verification is complete, so there's no point rushing the listing before the paperwork.

Who can sell in the US

RequirementWhat TikTok Shop US asks for
AgeAt least 18 years old
ResidenceYou must live in the US
Login detailsA phone number and email not already used to open another shop
IdentityUS passport or passport card, US driving licence, state ID or permanent resident card
Address proofUtility bill, insurance policy, bank statement or card statement
TaxA W9 form for US-based sellers (non-US sellers complete a W8)
Not allowedPoliticians can't become TikTok Shop sellers

Individual sellers also give their legal name, date of birth, residential address, the expiry date on their ID and the last four digits of their Social Security Number. If you don't have an SSN, TikTok accepts an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number instead.

Uploads must be under 10 MB, in PDF, JPEG or PNG format, show the whole document and not be altered. TikTok also asks you not to submit angled photos of your ID, which is one of the easiest ways to get bounced back.

Who can sell in the UK

In the UK, TikTok Shop has two seller types: sole traders and corporate sellers. If you're selling as yourself, you're a sole trader. The UK academy lists what an individual needs:

  • A valid UK passport or UK driving licence
  • Proof of your UK residential address
  • A selfie holding your ID
  • UK bank account details in the same name as your ID

Corporate sellers need their certificate of incorporation, company number and registration date, proof of a UK business or warehouse address, the ID of the business owner or primary authorised user, and a UK business bank account in the registered business name.

Two rules in the UK policy catch people out. You must store your inventory in the country you register in, and for UK orders you ship domestically and accept returns domestically. And every new seller goes through a Shop Probation Period after registration, so expect a settling-in phase rather than full freedom on day one.

Step by step: registering in Seller Center

  1. Go to TikTok Shop Seller Center for your country and choose to sign up.
  2. Sign up with your TikTok account (QR code or login), or with your email or phone number and the verification code TikTok sends you.
  3. Read the terms and enter an invitation code if you've been given one.
  4. Choose your seller type: Individual or Business in the US, sole trader or corporate in the UK.
  5. Enter your details exactly as they appear on your documents, then upload the documents.
  6. Fix any yellow verification warnings and submit only when every required field shows as verified.
  7. Complete tax details, add your warehouse and return addresses, and upload your first product.
  8. Link your official TikTok account.

The details you can't fix later

This is where most of the pain comes from, so it's worth slowing down:

  • No edits after submission. TikTok's US guide says business and personal information can't be changed once submitted.
  • Everything must match. The address on your utility bill has to match what you typed. Your taxpayer name and number have to match your tax documents.
  • One account, three changes. Each shop links to one official TikTok account. You can change it up to three times, and each change affects your brand continuity.
  • Investigations block you. The UK policy bars anyone currently under investigation by a trade or consumer protection authority from registering until it's resolved in their favour.

If your registration is rejected, TikTok's advice is simple: correct the mismatch, or upload a clearer copy in an accepted format.

Before you list anything

Once you're approved, read up on how TikTok Shop treats buyers and sellers. My guide to whether TikTok Shop is legit covers returns, refunds and the risks sellers face, and this breakdown of how much TikTok Shop takes explains the deductions from each order so you can plan each listing with your eyes open.

My advice: treat registration like a tax return, not a sign-up form. Gather every document first, check the names and addresses match letter for letter, and only then press submit. It's the one part of TikTok Shop you can't undo.

Returns will happen, so see returns management software.
