To cancel Kindle Unlimited, which Amazon now calls Kindle+, go to Cancel Kindle+, sign in to your Amazon account and select Cancel membership. Your membership stays active until your next billing date, and after that you lose access to the books you've checked out.
People still search for Kindle Unlimited, but Amazon's own help pages now use the name Kindle+ everywhere, so that's the name you'll see on the buttons. Here's the catch: Amazon says you won't get a partial refund for unused months on a prepaid Kindle+ membership, which covers gift and bundle memberships. Cancelling a prepaid one early just ends your reading sooner.
Cancel Kindle+ on Amazon
- Go to Cancel Kindle+ in Amazon's help pages.
- Sign in to your Amazon account.
- Select Cancel membership.
- Keep reading until your next billing date. After it passes, you lose access to the titles you've checked out.
Those steps are only for people who signed up through Amazon. If you joined in the Kindle app on Android and paid with Google, the subscription belongs to Google Play.
Cancel Kindle+ through Google Play
- Open the Google Play Store app on your Android device.
- Go to Payments and Subscriptions.
- Select Subscriptions and manage Kindle+ from that list.
Amazon reminds Google Play members that the subscription renews automatically through the Google Play payment method, so cancelling on the Amazon website won't stop it. The same rule applies to access: the membership runs until the next billing date, then your checked-out content goes.
Cancel, pause or change your card
| What you want | What to do, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Stop Kindle+ for good | Cancel membership; access lasts until the next billing date |
| A month off | Pause your monthly subscription for 1 month; it starts at the end of the billing cycle |
| Come back early from a pause | Resume any time from Kindle+ Central |
| Keep Kindle+ but pay with a different card | Update Payment under Payment Details |
| Stop a gift or bundle membership early | Possible, but there's no partial refund for unused months |
The pause is worth knowing about. Instead of cancelling, you can pause a monthly subscription for one month. It takes effect at the end of the billing cycle and resumes automatically, or you can resume it yourself any time while it's paused from Kindle+ Central. You can't pause during a free trial or a promotional period.
What happens to your borrowed books
Kindle+ is a lending service, not a shop, so nothing you borrow is yours to keep. While you're a member you can borrow up to 20 titles at a time from its digital books, audiobooks, comics, manga and magazines, with no due dates, and read them on any Kindle device or the free Kindle app on a phone, computer or tablet. Once your paid time runs out, you lose access to all of it.
Two recent changes matter if magazines were part of your reason for subscribing. Since April 22, 2026, each magazine issue you borrow counts towards the 20-title limit, and Amazon no longer delivers new issues automatically. Members used to be able to borrow up to 50 magazine issues, and Amazon said it would automatically return the excess for anyone over 20 borrowed titles by July 30, 2026. Amazon also notes the Kindle+ catalogue can change at any time.
Use your borrows before the billing date
If you're cancelling, the days before your billing date are still paid for, so it's worth finishing what you've started. In the Kindle app, turn on the Kindle+ filter to see Kindle+ books in both the Kindle Store and your library. For audiobooks, look for the with Narration headset icon on Kindle book pages, or browse the Kindle+ store and filter by audiobooks.
Magazines are fussier. You borrow them in the Kindle for Android app, the Amazon shopping app for Android or a mobile or desktop browser. You can't borrow them from the Amazon shopping app for iOS or on an eReader, though downloaded issues can be read in the Kindle app on all your devices.
Which Amazon store your Kindle+ runs through
You cancel in the Amazon store you subscribed through, and Amazon ties Kindle+ to your country or territory:

Free trials and payment details
If you're on a free trial, Amazon moves you to a monthly paid plan automatically when it ends, so cancel before then if you don't want to pay. You need an Amazon account with a current, valid payment method to use Kindle+ at all.
To change the card instead of cancelling, go to Manage your Kindle+ Membership, sign in, select Update Payment under Payment Details, then pick a different card or enter a new one. Amazon Store cards can't be used to pay for Kindle+ at the moment. Kindle+ can also be given as a gift for 6, 12 or 24 months, which is exactly the kind of prepaid membership that gets no refund for unused months.
Should you cancel Kindle+?
I'd pause for a month if you're just busy, because you keep everything set up and it restarts on its own. I'd cancel if you've stopped reading the Kindle+ catalogue, but do it a few days before the billing date, finish what you've borrowed first, and remember you keep reading until that date. If cost is the reason, check the current Kindle Unlimited price first, and if you want to keep reading without a subscription, here's where to find free Kindle books.
