Where to Get Free Kindle Books (2026): 4 Legal Sources and the File Format That Works

The short version: the best places to get free Kindle books legally in 2026 are your public library through Libby, Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks and the free titles in Amazon's own Kindle Store. Library books can go straight to a Kindle only in the US, and for the rest you'll usually send an EPUB file with Send to Kindle.

A Kindle doesn't mean every book has to come from a shop. Plenty of classics are out of copyright, and your library card works for ebooks as well as paper ones. The only real trick is knowing which file to download so it opens on your device first time.

In no particular order, each one best for a different reader:

  • Your library through Libby: best for new and popular books you'd otherwise wait to borrow.
  • Project Gutenberg: best for a huge range of classic books in the public domain.
  • Standard Ebooks: best for classics that are carefully formatted and look good on a Kindle.
  • Amazon's Kindle Store: best for free titles that land in your library with one tap.

If you're outside the US, the Libby app itself is the easy way to read your library's ebooks on a phone or tablet.

How each source gets books onto your Kindle

Libby's help centre says you can read most Libby books on a Kindle ereader, but that this is available in the US only. From the Loans tab on your Shelf you tap Read With, choose Kindle, sign in to Amazon and tap Get Library Book, and the book appears on the devices linked to your Amazon account. If you use a Fire tablet, Libby recommends reading in the Libby app instead.

Project Gutenberg says that since late 2022 Amazon has moved away from the old MOBI format and increased its support for EPUB. Its advice is to consider EPUB, specifically EPUB3, first, because the files are smaller and work with the Kindle app and most Kindle devices. You can use Send to Kindle with EPUB, or copy the file across from your computer, which it says usually works most reliably. It also points out that some libraries list free Project Gutenberg ebooks in their own catalogue.

Amazon's Send to Kindle page lists the file types it accepts, including PDF, DOCX and EPUB, with a maximum file size of 200 MB, and you need to be signed in to your Amazon account to use it.

The file format catch

This is where people get stuck. Standard Ebooks offers an azw3 file for Kindle devices, but it says plainly that you can't use Send to Kindle to transfer that azw3 file. You have to copy it across with a cable instead. It also mentions a long-standing Kindle bug: side-loaded ebooks don't show their cover automatically, so it offers a separate cover thumbnail you can add.

So the rule of thumb is this. If you're sending a book by email or the Send to Kindle page, use the EPUB. If you're plugging your Kindle into a computer, the azw3 from Standard Ebooks gives you the nicest result. Mixing those up is an easy way to end up with a book that won't open.

How to get a free Kindle book in a few minutes

  1. Decide whether you want a new release or a classic.
  2. For new books, sign in to Libby with your library card and borrow the title.
  3. In the US, choose Read With and then Kindle to send the borrowed book to your device.
  4. For classics, download the EPUB from Project Gutenberg or Standard Ebooks.
  5. Upload the EPUB on Amazon's Send to Kindle page while signed in.
  6. Sync your Kindle and the book appears in your library.

Keeping your free ebook library tidy

Once you start collecting classics, your Kindle library fills up fast. Project Gutenberg mentions Calibre as a good example of free software that works on many different devices and can help you manage your ebook library. It's handy for renaming files, adding missing covers and keeping a backup on your computer, so you're not relying on one device. Keep a folder for books you've finished and one for books you want to read next, and the free library stays easy to browse.

Which source to start with

Go to Libby first for anything recent, because borrowing from your library is the only legal free route to most new titles. For classics, Standard Ebooks is the one I'd open first because the books look so much cleaner, and Project Gutenberg fills in everything else. If you'd rather listen, my guide to free audiobooks covers the library apps for that too, and there are more options in my list of free ebooks sites. I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

A word on the sites that promise any bestseller for free: if the book is new and the site isn't your library or the publisher, it's almost certainly pirated, and those downloads are a common way to pick up malware.

My verdict: borrow new books through Libby, get classics from Standard Ebooks, and send EPUB files rather than anything else. That covers almost everything you'll want to read for free.
