Navigation on Instagram is a story insight that counts how people moved through your story: taps forward, taps back, exits and swipes to the next account's story. It's a count of actions, so one viewer can add several. A high back count is good news; lots of exits and next-story swipes mean people left early.
Open the insights on any story and you'll find a section called Navigation with a number that often looks bigger than your viewer count. That's not an error. Navigation counts movements, not people, and once you know what each movement means it becomes one of the most useful numbers Instagram gives you about your stories.
The four parts of navigation
Meta's developer documentation defines navigation as the total number of actions taken from your story, made up of four movements:
| Movement | What the viewer did | What it usually tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Forward | Tapped to see your next photo or video | They moved on within your story; normal behaviour |
| Back | Tapped to see the previous photo or video again | Something was worth a second look |
| Next story | Swiped to the next account's story | They skipped the rest of yours |
| Exited | Left stories altogether | They stopped watching stories at that point |
Add the four together and you get the navigation total. Instagram shows the breakdown when you tap into it.
How to read your navigation numbers
Look at where each movement happens, not just the total:
- Lots of back taps on one frame: people wanted to reread or rewatch it. Text-heavy frames and fast-moving videos often get these. Keep doing whatever that frame did.
- Lots of forward taps on one frame: it didn't hold attention. Try less text or a stronger first second.
- Next story swipes early in a sequence: your opening frame didn't give a reason to stay.
- Exits: people closed stories completely. A few are normal at the end of a long sequence; a spike mid-story is worth investigating.
Navigation versus interactions
Navigation is about movement. Interactions are about actions taken on the story itself. Instagram's story insights page lists interactions as replies, shares, sticker taps, link taps and other engagement, and accounts engaged as the unique accounts that interacted, for example by replying, sharing or tapping stickers.
A story can have strong navigation and weak interactions: people watched it all but didn't reply or tap anything. That usually means it was entertaining but didn't ask for anything.
What sticker taps mean on Instagram
Sticker taps count the times people tapped an interactive element on your story, such as a mention, a location, a hashtag or a product sticker. Instagram groups sticker taps inside interactions on story insights, next to replies, shares and link taps. Link taps are counted separately from sticker taps, so if you use a link sticker, check that line for clicks to your website.
| Story metric | Counts |
|---|---|
| Sticker taps | Taps on interactive stickers on the story |
| Link taps | Taps on a link on the story |
| Replies | Messages sent in reply to the story |
| Shares | Times the story was shared |
How to find navigation in your insights
- You need a public personal or professional account to see insights.
- Open your story and tap View insights (or Options, then View insights).
- Scroll to Navigation and tap it to see forward, back, next story and exits.
For past stories, go to your profile, tap View insights and find the story under Top content based on engagement. Stories disappear after 24 hours, but Instagram keeps their insights for up to two years after they're created.
If you pull insights through a tool
If you use a scheduling or analytics tool that reads Instagram data, there's a catch Meta's developer documentation mentions: through the API, story insights are only available for 24 hours, even if the story is archived or added to a highlight. Instagram's own app keeps them much longer. So if a tool shows blanks for older stories, check the app instead.
Navigation and the order of your viewers
Navigation tells you what people did, not who did it or in what order they watched. If you're wondering about the viewer list itself, that's a separate question, and if your view counts have fallen recently, my guide to why Instagram story views dropped suddenly covers the usual causes.

Turning navigation into better stories
- Find the frame with the most forward taps and cut or shorten it next time.
- Find the frame with the most back taps and make more like it.
- Put your most interesting frame first to reduce early next-story swipes.
- Keep sequences tight; exits often rise as stories get longer.
For reels, the equivalent number is watch time; here's how average watch time on Instagram reels is worked out. And if you're comparing story numbers with post numbers, my explainer on accounts reached versus impressions clears up the overlap.
A quick example
Say your story has five frames and 200 viewers. Frame two shows a burst of forward taps, frame three gets lots of back taps, and most next-story swipes happen on frame one. Reading that: frame one's opening isn't strong enough, frame two is skippable, and frame three is your best content. Next time, open with something closer to frame three and drop frame two.
My take
Don't read the navigation total on its own. Read the breakdown frame by frame. Back taps are compliments, forward taps are feedback, and next-story swipes and exits are where your story lost people. Fix the frame before the drop and the rest of your story gets seen.
Frequently asked questions
What does navigation mean on Instagram story insights?
It's the total number of movements people made through your story: taps forward, taps back, exits and swipes to the next story.
Is a high navigation number good on Instagram?
It depends on the breakdown. Back taps are a good sign; lots of exits and next-story swipes mean people left early.
What are sticker taps on Instagram?
Sticker taps count taps on interactive stickers on your story. Instagram includes them in story interactions with replies, shares and link taps.
Why is navigation higher than my number of viewers?
Navigation counts actions, not people. One viewer can tap forward several times, tap back and then exit.
How long can I see navigation for an old story?
Instagram keeps story insights for up to two years after the story is created, even though the story itself expires after 24 hours.
