To delete your Amazon account, go to Close Your Amazon Account, sign in, review what's linked, pick a reason, tick Yes, I want to permanently close my Amazon account and delete my data, and select Close my Account. Amazon then sends a confirmation by email or text, and you've got five days to reply and verify the request.
Here's the catch. Closing isn't limited to the Amazon site you're on. Amazon says the request also closes your account on amazon.fr, amazon.com.mx and every other global site that uses the same sign-in, and a closed account can't be restored. If you ever want to shop again, you start a brand new account with none of your history.
The close request, step by step
- Go to Close Your Amazon Account.
- Sign into the account you want to close.
- Review the products and services associated with your account.
- If you still want to go ahead, select a reason in the drop-down menu.
- Tick the box next to Yes, I want to permanently close my Amazon account and delete my data.
- Select Close my Account.
- Reply to the confirmation Amazon sends to your email address or by text message within five days.
You need that reply to verify the request, so keep an eye on your inbox and texts once you've submitted it. If you have more than one Amazon account, you need to go through these steps for each one. Amazon does that so it has the right authority to act on every account you want closed.
Save these before you close
Once the account is gone, you can't see your order history or print a proof of purchase or an invoice. Amazon recommends downloading any invoices you might need first, because without them you'll likely be unable to prove a purchase, and that could affect a warranty claim or getting product support from the seller or manufacturer.
Amazon also recommends downloading anything you've uploaded to its services, such as Amazon Photos. On Fire tablets, information stored in Amazon apps, such as saved contacts, calendar events, Maps bookmarks and device backups, goes too, so use the in-app download options for contacts and calendar events. If you've got Kindle books you no longer want on a device, you can delete books from Kindle separately, but closing the account removes your Kindle content and notes either way.
Getting a copy of your data
For personal data that isn't shown in Your Account, such as your search history, use Request your data:
- Go to Request your data and sign in. Signing in is required for security.
- Select the information you want to receive.
- Select Submit Request.
- Select the validation link in the confirmation email Amazon sends.
- Download your data using the secure link sent to your email address when it's ready.
What closing your Amazon account deletes
| Area | What you lose, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Shopping | Customer profile, reviews, discussion posts, returns, refunds for orders, order history and invoices |
| Memberships | Prime memberships of all types across all Amazon websites, subscriptions and wish lists |
| Digital content | Prime Video account and purchased videos, Amazon Music purchases and playlists, Amazon Photos, Kindle content and annotations, Audible credits and membership, Appstore purchases and coins |
| Business and work | AWS account and its resources, Selling Partner and Seller Central access, Associates, Amazon Business user account, Amazon Flex, Kindle Direct Publishing and Author Central |
| Devices and Alexa | Echo, Fire TV, tablets and e-readers are no longer registered to you; Alexa skills, alarms, lists and voice recordings go |
| Other linked services | comiXology, your wholefoodsmarket.com profile, your IMDb and IMDbPro accounts |
Sellers need to take this seriously. Amazon says that after closure you can't access or manage business accounts such as Seller, Brand Registry or Advertising accounts, and it can mean limited or no access to Fulfillment by Amazon inventory, payment transactions, orders and tax documents.
Gift cards, Amazon Pay and what survives
Your gift card balance won't be available after closure and you can't redeem more Amazon Gift Cards, so check the Gift Cards Balance and Ledger page and spend what's there first. Gift cards you've sent to other people can still be redeemed on their accounts, and third-party gift cards bought from Amazon stay valid on those third-party websites.
Amazon Pay needs care too. Purchases made with Amazon Pay that haven't been billed and closed may still be charged, because billing follows the merchant's shipping. Any subscription paid with Amazon Pay needs a new payment method, and it's on you to give the provider one. Amazon also keeps some data it's legally required to hold, such as order history, for tax, accounting and fraud prevention.

Can't sign in to the account you want to delete?
You need to sign in to close it, so fix access first. Accounts can use a password, a one-time security code sent to your phone or email, or a passkey. If you made the account with a mobile number, sign in with that number and include your country code. Passwords are case sensitive, so check Caps Lock. If a code doesn't arrive by SMS, select Resend OTP, or Send OTP by WhatsApp to get it on the WhatsApp account linked to your registered number. If you don't have an account, or you're an authorised agent under applicable state law, Amazon asks you to email it instead.
My verdict on deleting your Amazon account
I'd only close it once you've downloaded your invoices, your photos and anything you've bought digitally that you want to keep, because none of it comes back. If you just want to stop spending, removing your cards does far less damage than closing the whole account. And if the real goal is to stop Amazon storing a card, you can pay other ways too, here's what works with Apple Pay on Amazon.
