When Gemini isn't working, read the error first: a number in brackets such as (5) or (7), or a four-digit code like 1099, means Gemini hit an unexpected issue and a retry or a new chat usually fixes it. Code 1060 is different: as of October 2026 Google says it means Gemini may not be available in your country or region, so retrying won't help.
The catch: some errors can't be fixed by trying again
Most people hit retry until something changes. For code 1060, nothing will. Google's help page links it to availability: Gemini Apps may not be offered where you are. The message 'Gemini is currently not supported in your location' has the same cause.
The fix there is to check whether the Gemini web app and the Gemini mobile app are available in your country or region, not to clear caches or reinstall.
The second surprise is 'I cannot fulfill this request'. It sounds like a refusal, but Google says it usually means a Connected App your prompt needs, such as Google Workspace, isn't connected. Switch it on in Connected Apps settings and the same prompt often works.
Gemini error decoder
| Code or message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1060 or 'not supported in your location' | Country or region not supported | Check web and mobile availability; retrying will not help |
| (2) (4) (5) (7) (9) (12) (13) (17), 1000+ | Unexpected processing issue | Retry, new chat, remove attachment, wait five minutes |
| Too many requests in a short time period | Busy, or temporary usage limit | Wait a few minutes |
| I cannot fulfill this request | Connected App not on | Open Connected Apps and connect it |
| Terms of service are updated | Terms refresh | Refresh or restart the app |
| I can't generate images, or I can't save in Sheets | A normal task failed in this chat | Start a New chat and enter the prompt again |
| I wasn't able to do what you asked because I don't have access to the information | No permission, or privacy protections block it | Check Connected Apps and device permissions |
The 1000+ group covers codes like 1099 and 1185. Google lumps them in with the bracketed numbers: something went wrong while Gemini was processing your prompt, and the general fix list below applies.
Google's seven fixes, in order
For the unexpected-issue codes, Google gives a fix list as of October 2026. I'd work through it top to bottom, because the early steps are the quickest:
- Retry your prompt.
- Start a new chat.
- Check or remove attachments: make sure the file type is supported and you haven't gone over the upload limit.
- If you're using voice or Gemini Live, switch to a typed prompt.
- Check your internet connection, and switch networks if it's slow.
- If traffic is high, wait about five minutes.
- Refresh the browser tab, or close and reopen the mobile app.
Step four trips up a lot of people. If a spoken request keeps failing in Gemini Live, typing the same request is one of Google's listed fixes.
Messages that point somewhere else
- Too many requests in a short time period. Gemini may be busy, or you may have hit a temporary usage limit. Wait a few minutes and try again. If it keeps happening, my page on Gemini's usage limits explains how the caps work.
- This feature only works with content that Gemini can access. Same cause as 'I cannot fulfill this request': a Connected App isn't connected.
- I can't generate images, or I can't save in Sheets. If it's something Gemini normally does for you, start a New chat and enter the prompt again.
- Terms of service are updated. Please restart the app. Refresh the browser or restart the mobile app.
When the problem is your account or your device
Some failures aren't faults at all. Google notes that some features aren't available on work or school accounts, or for users under 18 or under 13 (or the applicable age in your country). If a feature works on your personal account but not your work one, that's likely why.
The message 'Sorry, I wasn't able to do what you asked because I don't have access to the information' means Gemini doesn't have permission, or privacy protections are blocking it. Check device permissions too, such as microphone access for voice prompts, and the Connected Apps permissions your prompt depends on.
Reporting it to Google
If none of that works, tell Google. Under a response, click Good response or Bad response and pick a reason if you want. To report a wider problem, go to Settings & help > Send feedback on gemini.google.com and add a screenshot.

Put the error number in your description, because that's what maps it to a cause. One limit: work accounts with Pro access and school accounts can't add extra feedback or attach content.
My verdict on fixing Gemini
I'd always read the code before doing anything. If it's 1060, stop retrying and check availability where you are. If it's a bracketed number or a 1000+ code, run Google's seven fixes in order, starting with a new chat and dropping any attachment. If it's 'I cannot fulfill this request', go straight to Connected Apps. And if you're getting 'too many requests' every day, the problem isn't a bug, it's your limit.
