To use Gemini Live, open the Gemini app and tap Live at the bottom, or swipe left, then start talking. It works in the mobile app on Android and iPhone, not in the Gemini web app. The detail people trip over: camera and screen sharing switch off whenever your screen locks.
Gemini Live is the part of the Gemini app where you simply talk, and Gemini talks back. If you've ever wanted to think out loud while you're driving to a client, walking the dog or standing in a stockroom, it's built for exactly that. I've read through Google's own help pages so you get the steps and the limits as they're written now.
What Gemini Live is, in plain words
Google's help page describes Gemini Live as a natural, free-flowing conversation with Gemini. You speak, Gemini answers out loud, and you can interrupt it mid-sentence, the way you would with a person. It isn't a different AI. It's a voice mode inside the Gemini app, so it sits alongside the typing version rather than replacing it.
If you're brand new to the app itself, my first-week guide to Gemini for business owners covers the basics before you start talking to it.
What you need before you start Gemini Live
According to Google's help page, you need all of these:
- The Gemini mobile app on an Android phone or tablet, or on an iPhone or iPad.
- To be signed in to Gemini Apps, with either a personal Google account or a work or school account that has access to Gemini Apps.
- To be 13 or over, or the applicable age in your country.
- The latest version of the Google app, if you're on Android.
Google also says it releases Live updates gradually, so a newer feature may not be on your phone yet even when a friend's has it. And Gemini Live isn't available in the Gemini web app or in Gemini in Google Messages, so it's a phone and tablet feature.
How to start a Gemini Live conversation
On an Android phone or tablet
- Open the Gemini app.
- Tap Live, or swipe left.
- Follow any first-time prompts on screen.
- Start talking.
Google's page also says you can say 'Hey Google, let's talk Live' on Android if Gemini is set as your mobile assistant.
On an iPhone or iPad
- Open the Gemini app.
- At the bottom, tap Live, or swipe left.
- Follow the first-time instructions.
- Start talking.
On either device you can't start Live from a locked screen. Google says that if a chat is put on hold or ends while the phone is locked, you'll need to open your phone again to carry on.
Showing Gemini Live your camera or your screen
This is the part that surprises people. Live can look at what you're looking at, which is handy for questions like what a label says or how to fix a settings screen.
- Camera: in your Live chat, tap the camera control, then use the switch control to move between the front and rear cameras. Tap the camera control again to stop.
- Screen sharing: turn on notifications for Gemini Live first, then tap the screen sharing control on the Live screen and follow the instructions. Google's help says that on iPhone your full screen is shared.
- Stopping: the camera switches off when Live is on hold, when you leave the app or when the screen locks, and it doesn't switch back on by itself. Screen sharing stops in the same situations and you have to start it again.
Because sharing is switched off whenever your screen locks, it's a safe default, but it does mean you'll sometimes need to restart it mid-task.
What Gemini Live can and can't do
Google's help page is upfront about the limits, which is worth knowing before you plan your day around it:
- Gems can't be used with Live for now.
- Farsi isn't supported in the Gemini mobile app, and changing Gemini's voice isn't available in some languages.
- With a work or school account, only Google Calendar, Google Keep and Google Tasks work as connected apps in Live, and your admin has to switch the apps on.
- You can undo actions only while Live is open on screen, not while it runs in the background.
- Running Live in the background needs the Live notifications turned on.
With a personal account, Google lists a wider set of connected apps on iPhone, including Calendar, Drive, Keep, Tasks, Gmail, YouTube and Spotify. Menus and the exact list change as updates roll out, so use the connected apps settings inside the app as your final word.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Using Gemini Live in a small business
Live is at its best for thinking jobs rather than precision jobs. Here are ways I'd use it, based on what the feature is designed to do:
- Talking through a difficult email before you write it, then asking Gemini to read back the main points.
- Rehearsing a pitch or a sales call out loud and asking for the weak spots.
- Planning a week by speaking your to-do list and asking Gemini to group it by priority.
- Pointing the camera at a shelf, a product or a handwritten note and asking questions about it.
- Practising a language you need for a supplier or customer.
If you want ready-made starting points for the typed side of Gemini, my Gemini prompts for business owners work just as well when you say them out loud. And if you'd like help working out where voice AI fits into your own business, that's what an AI consultant is for.
Privacy and safety when you use Gemini Live
Google's page makes one point very clearly: respect other people's privacy and ask permission before recording them or including them in a Live chat. That matters if you're a business owner who works with clients, staff or children. Don't point the camera at a customer's paperwork or a colleague without asking first.
- Gemini can use memories of past chats, and you can turn Memory off in settings. Live follows the same permissions as your regular chats.
- Muting keeps the session open, whereas ending a chat closes it and gives you a transcript.
- For how Google handles Live data, Google points you to the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, so read that page for your own account.
I'd also keep anything confidential out of a Live chat unless you've checked your account settings, and never read out passwords, card numbers or API keys.
Gemini Live compared with the usual Gemini chat

| Can you interrupt? | Not applicable | Yes, per Google's help page |
| Camera and screen | You attach photos or files | You can stream your camera or screen |
| Where it works | Mobile app and web | Mobile app only, not the web app |
