How to Clean Gutters Safely: Steps, Tools and Ladder Safety

To clean gutters, pick a dry, calm day, set a stable ladder at about a 75-degree angle and wear gloves and goggles. Scoop out leaves and debris from the drainpipe end outwards, rinse with a hose and check the downpipe flows freely. Do it at least twice a year, and leave tall or awkward gutters to a professional.

Gutters are easy to forget until the first heavy downpour, when water pours over the edge of the house instead of running down the pipe. By then the damage is under way: leaves, twigs and silt have built up, the channel can't carry the water, and the wall below gets soaked.

Clearing them is a simple job in principle, but it involves a ladder, so the safety side matters as much as the method. The steps below follow a UK home-insurance guide, and the ladder advice follows the Health and Safety Executive's own page on ladders and stepladders. Here's how I'd explain it, with the ladder part kept honest.

Signs your gutters need clearing

You don't need to wait for an overflow. Look out for these from the ground:

  • Water spilling over the edge of the gutter in rain instead of reaching the downpipe.
  • Gutters that sag or don't seem to be draining.
  • Rust, loose fixings or leaks along the run.

Overflowing gutters can also be the hidden cause of a stain inside the house, which is why they're one of the first things to check in our guide on how to find a roof leak.

Choosing the day and checking the weather

The insurer guide is clear on this one: pick a dry, sunny day, and avoid wet, icy or windy conditions, because they make the work dangerous. That's the first decision, and it's worth waiting for the right weather rather than getting it done in a hurry.

Gutter cleaning tools and safety gear

The insurance guide lists what you'll need:

  • Safety gear: goggles, gloves and sturdy shoes with good traction.
  • A ladder in good condition and tall enough for the job, plus a stabiliser.
  • A bin or rubbish bags for the debris.
  • A gutter scoop or small trowel.
  • A garden hose.
  • A plumbing snake, in case a blockage in the downpipe won't shift.

Ladder safety before you climb

The HSE says ladders and stepladders can be a sensible, practical option where the risk is low and the work is short, which it defines as no more than 30 minutes at a time. That guidance is aimed at workplaces, but it's a good yardstick for a home job too: if clearing the gutters is going to take much longer than that, or the ladder won't feel secure, stop and think about hiring someone.

  • The insurer guide says to put the ladder on a stable surface at about a 75-degree angle.
  • Have someone hold the bottom, or use a stability device.
  • Check the ladder first. If it's damaged or too short, don't use it.
  • Keep a handhold. The HSE page on stepladders says you should keep three points of contact, meaning a hand and two feet, or use your body, such as knees or chest, for stability when both hands are briefly needed.
  • Don't reach out sideways. Climb down and move the ladder instead.

If any part of the job needs you to lean out from a ladder at the top of a tall house, leave it to a professional.

How to clean gutters step by step

  1. Inspect first. Before climbing, look for loose fasteners, leaks or rust, and note any repairs needed.
  2. Put your gloves and goggles on.
  3. Set up the ladder as above.
  4. Start near the drainpipe and work towards the far end, scooping leaves, twigs and dirt into a bag.
  5. Rinse the gutter with the hose so that the last of the dirt flushes out and the water runs freely.
  6. Check for leaks or cracks while you're there and note any sections that need repair or replacing.
  7. Put leaves and twigs in garden waste and anything else in general waste.

What to do if the downpipe is blocked

A clean gutter is no use if the water can't get away, so check the downpipe too. The insurer guide says to look for anything blocking the flow, then flush it with a hose and spray nozzle, starting at the drainpipe and working up the gutter. If the clog is stubborn, a plumbing snake can help.

If water still backs up, or you can't reach the problem from the ground or the ladder, don't force it. A blocked downpipe is a good reason to call a professional rather than stretching further from the ladder.

How often to clean your gutters

The insurance guide suggests cleaning them at least twice a year as part of normal home maintenance, and stresses doing it before the cold, wet winter months. Gutter guards or screens are mentioned as a way of reducing future clogs, though they don't replace the check.

Your roof and gutters work together

Tiles shed rain into the gutters, so a tidy channel protects the roof edge as well as the wall. If you're curious about what's sitting above yours, I've put together a guide to the types of roof tiles found on British homes.

Sharing what you know about exterior maintenance

Plenty of people search for exactly this job each autumn. If you write about home exteriors and have advice to add, there are places that might welcome it.

Frequently asked questions

How often should you clean gutters?

A UK home-insurance guide says at least twice a year, and before the cold, wet winter months.

What do you need to clean gutters?

Goggles, gloves, sturdy shoes, a ladder in good condition with a stabiliser, a gutter scoop or small trowel, bags for the debris and a garden hose. A plumbing snake helps with stubborn downpipe blockages.

What is the safest way to use a ladder for gutter cleaning?

Use a dry, calm day, set the ladder on a stable surface at about a 75-degree angle, have someone hold it and keep three points of contact. The HSE says ladders suit short, low-risk jobs of no more than 30 minutes.

How do you clear a blocked downpipe?

Flush it with a hose and spray nozzle from the drainpipe upwards. If the blockage won't shift, a plumbing snake can help. If you still can't clear it, ask a professional.

Can I clean gutters in the rain?

No. The insurer guide says to choose a dry, sunny day and avoid wet, icy or windy conditions, because they make the job dangerous.
