Discord connections link your other accounts, such as Spotify, Xbox, PlayStation and Steam, to your Discord profile so your communities can see what you play or listen to. Add one in User Settings, then Connections, by clicking the app's icon and logging in to that app, and you don't need Nitro for any of it.
Two traps catch people, as of October 2026. Qualifying for a Linked Role in a server isn't enough: you have to opt in yourself, and the first time that needs the desktop flow. And a payment-provider connection only counts as verified if that account has a bank account on file, not just a card. One more: the Instagram connection has gone, so it can't power anything any more.
Discord connections in five answers

| Does Instagram still work? | No, it was removed |
How to add a connection
On desktop or in a browser:
- Open User Settings and go to the Connections tab.
- Press the View More icon to see the full list of apps.
- Click the app's icon and log in on that app's own screen.
- Look for the confirmation that you've connected that account to Discord. That's how you know it worked.
- Choose whether to switch on Display on profile and Display details on profile.
On mobile, tap your avatar at the bottom right, then the cogwheel at the top right, then Connections, then Add at the top right, and tap the app's icon. For the step-by-step on specific apps, see my guides to connecting Spotify to Discord and using Discord on Xbox.
Controlling what other people see
Any user can see the connection details you choose to display. You've got two switches, and they do different things:
- Display details on profile off: people still see that you're verified with that connection, but the personal data from it stays hidden.
- Display on profile off: the connection is hidden completely.
Both are on by default for most connections. The exceptions are connections tied to real names, and Discord gives Facebook and Spotify as examples. Here's a useful detail: you can hide a connection's details and still be eligible for roles that check those details.
Connection details are the richer data some apps show, such as Steam. If you set up a connection before details existed, you'll need to disconnect and reconnect it to get them.
Steam: why your games aren't showing
Discord can only see public information from Steam. If you want your game data on your Discord profile, your Steam profile has to be public. Discord refreshes details on a recurring basis, and you can force an update with the Refresh button in the Connections tab.
Linked Roles: the opt-in step people miss
Some servers give roles to members who have a particular connection. Having the connection and qualifying isn't the end of it. You have to opt in by going to the gated channel and clicking to join.
You can add connections on mobile, but the first opt-in for a Linked Role needs the desktop flow. After you've done it once, the gated channel works on mobile.
Payment-provider connections have their own rule. To be verified, the other payment account needs a valid bank account on file. A credit or debit card on its own doesn't qualify, so a role that checks a payment connection won't recognise you without one.
Third-party app connections
Discord lists these third-party app connections as available: Jefit, Bloxlink, Solana, DeviantArt, Charlemagne and Captcha.bot. Their connection details are only visible in the beta servers.
How to remove a connection
Go to User Settings, then Connections, press the X icon on the one you want gone, and confirm with Disconnect. Discord Support can't remove a connection for you, so you have to do it while logged in to the account.

Fake accounts, privacy and your data
Discord has safeguards against people using one social account to verify a pile of fake Discord accounts. A connection can only be added to another Discord account after a certain period, and account age and age in server show next to connection details.
On data, Discord says it stores connection data securely, won't share it with third parties without your permission, and doesn't sell it.
I've covered the related side in the Discord Events guide.
My verdict
Connect what helps people know you, and switch details off for anything that shows your real name. If a server role won't arrive, open that gated channel on desktop once and opt in. That fixes more 'broken' Linked Roles than anything else. Playing on console? Here's how Discord works on PS5.
Frequently asked questions
How do I connect accounts to Discord?
Open User Settings, then Connections, click the app's icon and log in to that app. Discord confirms on screen that the account is connected.
Can other people see my Discord connections?
Yes, if Display on profile is on. Turning off Display details on profile hides your personal data but still shows you're verified with that connection.
Why am I not getting a linked role on Discord?
Linked Roles are opt-in. Go to the gated channel and click to join, using desktop the first time.
Can I connect Instagram to Discord?
No. Discord removed the Instagram connection, and it can no longer power Linked Roles.
Do I need Nitro for Discord connections?
No. Nitro isn't needed for connections or connection details.
