To connect Spotify to Discord, open User Settings (the cog next to your name), choose Connections, click the Spotify icon and log in to Spotify. Then switch on Display Spotify as your status so friends can see what you're playing. On mobile, tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner, then the cog, then Connections, Add and Spotify.
Once it's linked, the song you're playing shows on your mini profile and full profile, and friends with Spotify Premium can join you with Listen Along. Discord's help page adds a quirk worth knowing early: if you talk with your mic in a voice chat for 30 seconds while Spotify is playing, Spotify pauses.
The catch: connected doesn't mean visible. If your Discord status is set to Invisible, or you've switched off Share my activity in your privacy settings, your music won't show to anyone, even though Spotify is linked. Discord also says a game it detects takes priority, so Spotify won't appear as your status while you're playing one.
Connect Spotify on desktop or in a browser
- Open Discord and click the cog icon next to your username at the bottom left. This opens User Settings.
- Choose Connections from the menu on the left.
- Click the Spotify icon. If you can't see it, open the View More option to show every service.
- A Spotify login window opens. Sign in and agree to link the accounts.
- Back in Connections, find Spotify in your list and switch on Display Spotify as your status. Switch on Display on Profile too if you want the account shown on your profile.
- Play a song in Spotify. Within a few seconds your status should change to Listening to Spotify.
Show Spotify on Discord mobile
- Open the Discord app and tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner to open your profile.
- Tap the cog icon in the top-right corner.
- Tap Connections, then Add in the top-right corner.
- Choose Spotify and log in to your Spotify account.
- Return to Connections, tap Spotify and make sure Display Spotify as your status is on.
Once the accounts are linked, the status comes from your Spotify account rather than the device, so music you play in the Spotify app on your phone can show on Discord too. If it doesn't appear, play a track, wait a moment and reopen your profile. Discord rearranges menus now and then; if Connections looks different, search the app's settings for the word.
What your friends see
Friends see the song title, artist and album art on your profile card. If they open your profile while you're listening, Discord gives them a Play on Spotify option and a Listen Along option. Listen Along plays the same track in their Spotify, in sync with yours.
You can also invite people. While Spotify is playing, click the plus in the message box and pick the Spotify invite. You can send it in a direct message, a group chat or a server channel. The invite updates when you change songs and shows the session has ended when you stop. You'll see who's listening with you at the bottom left of the app.
Free Spotify vs Premium on Discord
Here's how the two Spotify accounts compare, based on Discord's help pages. Features only; check Spotify's current terms for plan details.
| Feature | Free Spotify | Spotify Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Link Spotify to Discord | Yes | Yes |
| Show what you're playing as your status | Yes | Yes |
| Show Spotify on your profile | Yes | Yes |
| Join a friend's Listen Along session | No, Discord shows an error | Yes |
So if a friend can't join your session, it's almost always because they're on free Spotify, not because of anything on your side.
Spotify not showing on Discord? Try these fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Status set to Invisible | Click your avatar and choose Online or Idle instead. Invisible makes you appear offline to everyone. |
| Activity sharing switched off | Go to User Settings, then Activity Privacy (sometimes shown as Activity Sharing), and turn on Share my activity. |
| Server-level sharing off | Discord lets you choose activity sharing per server. Check the privacy settings for that server. |
| A game is running | Detected games take priority over Spotify. Close the game or stop it showing as your activity. |
| Display toggle off | User Settings, Connections, Spotify: switch on Display Spotify as your status. |
| Spotify pauses during voice chat | That's the 30-second mic rule. Use push to talk or mute while music plays. |
| Link seems broken | In Connections, press the X next to Spotify, choose Disconnect, then connect again. |
| Listen Along keeps stopping on a phone | Discord says the session ends if the phone sleeps at the end of a song. Keep the screen on. |
Two more from Discord's Spotify FAQ: if Listen Along won't start, pick a playback device in Spotify or play any song first so Discord knows which device you're on, and if the music drifts out of sync, check that the clock on both devices is set correctly. If Spotify itself is misbehaving, clearing the Spotify cache often sorts it out.

Keep your listening private without unlinking
You don't have to disconnect Spotify every time you'd rather keep a playlist to yourself. There are three gentler options, and each one leaves the link in place so you can switch back in seconds.
- Turn off the status only. In User Settings, Connections, Spotify, switch off Display Spotify as your status. The account stays linked, and you can still join friends who invite you.
- Hide activity from one server. Discord's activity settings let you choose where you share, so you can keep a work or school server from seeing your music while friends still can.
- Pause sharing everywhere. Switch off Share my activity in your activity privacy settings. This hides games and other activities too, not just Spotify.
Remember that profiles are seen by people in every server you share, not only friends, unless you change those defaults. If you're in big public servers, it's worth a quick look at who can see your activity before you start a late-night playlist.
My advice
Connect it on desktop first, switch on Display Spotify as your status, then check your online status isn't Invisible. That covers almost every "it's connected but nothing shows" problem. If you want sound in a voice channel rather than a status, the Discord soundboard is a different tool for that.
Frequently asked questions
Is connecting Spotify to Discord free?
Yes. Linking accounts and showing your music as a status works with a free Spotify account. Only joining a Listen Along session needs Spotify Premium.
Why does Spotify stop when I talk on Discord?
Discord says that if your mic transmits in voice chat for 30 seconds while Spotify is playing, Spotify pauses. Push to talk avoids it.
How do I disconnect Spotify from Discord?
Open User Settings, then Connections, press the X next to Spotify and confirm with Disconnect. Discord support can't remove it for you.
Can I listen along in a voice channel?
Listen Along runs through invites in text chats and from profiles. Your mic still triggers the 30-second pause, so keep it muted if you want the music to keep going. For more Discord basics, see the Discord help hub.
