Discord Events: How to Schedule One and Who Can Create or Manage Them

To create a Discord event, click the arrow next to your server's name, choose Create Event, pick a Voice Channel, Stage Channel or Somewhere Else, fill in the details and press Create Event. You need the Create Events permission to do it, and members who press Interested get a notification when the event goes live.

The permission split is where most servers go wrong. Create Events lets someone make events and then edit or cancel only the ones they made. To edit, start or cancel anyone else's event, they need Manage Events. Give your hosts only Create Events and they can't cover for each other if someone's late on the night.

Create Events vs Manage Events

PermissionWhat it allows, as of October 2026
Create EventsCreate events, then edit or cancel the ones you created
Manage EventsEdit, start and cancel every event
Create Events, server-wideNeeded for Somewhere Else and Stage Channel events
Invite permissionNeeded to generate Event Server Invite links

Both permissions work at server level and channel level. To set them for a role, open Server Settings from the menu next to the server name, go to Roles, pick the role, open Permissions and toggle Create Events and Manage Events under General Server Permissions. You can also set them per channel with Edit Channel, or for a whole category with Edit Category. If roles are new to you, here's how to give a role event permissions.

The three places an event can happen

Event locationWhat you needWorth knowing
Voice ChannelCreate Events, plus channel permissions such as View, Speak and ConnectLimited to 99 participants, whatever your Boost level
Stage ChannelServer-wide Create Events and Stage mod status in that StageCreate it from inside the Stage or from the server menu
Somewhere ElseServer-wide Create EventsFree-form: a text channel, an external link or a physical location name

That 99 cap is the one to plan around, because Server Boosts don't raise it. Stage Channel events have their own capabilities and limits, which Discord covers in its Stage Channels FAQ.

How to schedule a Discord event

  1. For a voice event, set the channel's permissions first with the cogwheel next to its name, or right-click it and choose Edit Channel.
  2. Click the down arrow next to the server name and choose Create Event.
  3. Choose Voice Channel, Stage Channel or Somewhere Else, then select the channel or type the location.
  4. Fill in the event details. For a Stage event, press Next to see a preview.
  5. Press Create Event.

For a Stage event you can also start from inside the Stage itself: enter the Stage Channel and press Create Event there. There's no deadline for scheduling ahead, so as long as the event hasn't started, you can create it. A server can have up to 100 scheduled events at once.

Starting, editing and cancelling

Events don't start themselves. Go to Events in the server's channel list, press the three dots under the event and choose Start Event. That's what sends the notification to everyone who marked themselves Interested. Editing and cancelling work the same way, through the three dots.

Forget to start it and Discord removes it. Here's a detail Discord's own help page contradicts itself on: one section says an event that doesn't start within an hour of its scheduled time is removed from the list of Scheduled Events, and the FAQ on the same page says 8 hours. Plan on the hour and you're covered either way.

That notification is the real reason to schedule rather than just turning up in voice. Discord's point is that events give your community advance notice of what's happening, and anyone who presses Interested is reminded the moment it goes live, so fewer people miss it. Pressing Interested also tells the host they'd like to come, and pressing it again takes that interest back.

Sharing an event

  • Event Server Invite Links work like a server invite but show an event card with an RSVP button, and people outside the server can join through them. Only members with invite permission can create them.
  • Direct event links work like message links. They only open for people who are already in the server and can see the event.

Events in private channels can't generate Event Server Invites and fall back to direct links, and Discord notes that invite links to private channels for events currently show as invalid. Who can see an event follows the channel, too: in a restricted voice channel, only members with access can see the event or attend. Once it's all set, announce the event so people know it's coming.

When the Events tab shows up

In Community servers, members with Manage Events always see the Events tab. Everyone else only sees it when there's an upcoming event, so don't worry if a new member says they can't find it.

My advice for running Discord events

Give one or two trusted roles Manage Events, so someone can always start or rescue an event, and give your wider host team Create Events. Keep voice events for groups under 99, start every event yourself on time, and share the Event Server Invite rather than a direct link if you want new people to find you. If you're still building the space, set up the server first and add events once it's ready.

Frequently asked questions

Who can create events on Discord?

Anyone with the Create Events permission. Somewhere Else and Stage Channel events need it server-wide, and Stage events also need Stage mod status.

How many people can join a Discord voice event?

Scheduled events in voice channels are limited to 99 participants, and Server Boosts don't change that.

Why can't I edit someone else's Discord event?

Create Events only lets you edit and cancel events you created. You need Manage Events to edit or cancel everyone's.

What happens if I don't start my Discord event?

Discord removes it from the list of scheduled events. Its help page gives both one hour and 8 hours, so start on time.

How many events can a Discord server schedule?

There's a cap of 100 scheduled events in a server at one time.

Do members get notified when an event starts?

Yes. Members who pressed Interested get a notification when the event is started.
