Form T2125, the Statement of Business or Professional Activities, is the CRA form self-employed Canadians use to report business, professional or commission income and expenses with their tax return. You need a separate T2125 for each business, and it covers sharing-economy and influencer income, including gifts of goods or services received in the course of the business.
If you freelance, drive for a ride-share app, rent out space through a sharing platform or earn from social media in Canada, the T2125 is the form that turns your year into a business profit or loss. It replaced two older forms, and it asks for more than many people expect, especially about income that wasn't paid in cash.
Who files a T2125
| You earn from | T2125? |
|---|---|
| Freelancing or a sole proprietorship | Yes |
| A profession, such as consulting or design | Yes, the professional income part |
| Self-employed commission sales | Yes |
| Ride-sharing or accommodation sharing | Yes, as business income |
| Social media influencing | Yes, including some gifts |
The CRA encourages the T2125, though it accepts the same information on other financial statements. It combines what used to be two forms: T2124 for business and T2032 for professional activities.
The influencer and gifts rule
This is the detail that surprises people. The CRA says business income includes monetary and non-monetary income. Its own example is a social media influencer who gets monetary amounts, including donations, gifts or tips, or non-monetary gifts such as consumer goods or services, in the course of their business. Free products sent to you because of your channel can count as income. Keep a record of what you receive and its value.
Bartering counts too
Sales include everything you receive for your goods or services, whether that's money, services or goods with a bartering or monetary value, such as credit units. Swapping design work for a website build isn't tax-free just because no money changed hands.
Filling in the income section
- At amount 3A, enter gross sales, commissions or fees, including GST/HST you collected or will collect.
- At amount 3B, enter the GST/HST, PST, returns, allowances and discounts included in 3A.
- If you use the quick method for GST/HST, work out the government assistance amounts the CRA describes.
- Enter adjusted gross sales on line 8000.
- Then list your expenses in the expenses section and work out your net income.
More than one business
If you have both business income and professional income, the CRA says to fill in a separate T2125 for each. The same goes if you run two separate businesses. Commission income from influencing or ride-sharing is treated as part of your business income on the same form.
Expenses you can claim
The expenses section is where you bring your taxable profit down. You deduct the costs of earning the business income, and only the business share of anything you also use personally. Every figure needs a record behind it: a receipt, invoice or bank statement. Mixing personal and business spending is the most common reason expense claims are hard to support.
The CRA's guide for self-employed people, T4002, explains each expense line and the special situations, such as using part of your home for the business. If you're filing a T2125 for the first time, it's worth reading the chapter on expenses before you start.
Sharing economy income
Ride-sharing and accommodation-sharing income are named in the CRA's instructions as business income for Part 3A. If you drive for a ride-share app, the commission-style earnings are treated as business income on the T2125. If you rent out a room or property short-term through a sharing platform, check how the CRA classifies it for your situation before you file, since rental income and business income are reported differently.
Practical tips
- The fillable PDF needs Acrobat Reader 10 or higher. Most people complete the T2125 inside certified tax software instead.
- Keep invoices, platform statements and receipts for every figure.
- Record non-cash income, such as gifts and barter, as you receive it.
- Separate GST/HST you collected from your sales figures before you reach line 8000.
Common T2125 mistakes
- They report only what's on their T4A slips, and forget clients who didn't send one.
- They leave GST/HST inside their sales figure, which overstates income.
- They don't record gifted products or barter because no money arrived.
- They put two different businesses on one form.
- They wait until June to find out they owed tax back in April.
None of these are hard to fix, and they're all easier if you keep records as you go rather than reconstructing the year in spring. It's the boring habits that save you money here.

When it's due
Self-employed Canadians have until June 15 to file their return with the T2125, but any balance owing is due by April 30. Interest runs on unpaid tax from the day after. If you expect to owe, estimate and pay by April 30, then finish the form.
T2125 vs a T4A
A T4A slip from a client shows what they reported paying you. The T2125 is your own full account of the business: all your income, slip or no slip, and your expenses. Use slips as a cross-check against your invoices, but report everything on the T2125.
My verdict
The T2125 is straightforward once your records are organised and your business and personal money are kept apart, but don't miss the non-cash income: gifts, free products and barter are where people under-report.
