To send a Discord Nitro gift, open a DM, group chat or server channel, select the gift icon to the right of the text box, pick the gift, then review it and select Buy Gift. Send it in a DM if it's meant for one friend, because a gift link shared in a group chat or server channel can be claimed by anyone.
That's the catch with Nitro gifts. The link belongs to whoever claims it, a claimed gift can't be refunded or moved to another account, and if your friend already pays for Nitro, your gift lands as account credit that only works on desktop and browser subscriptions. Here's how sending and claiming work as of October 2026.
How to send a Nitro gift
You can gift monthly or yearly Nitro or Nitro Basic subscriptions from desktop or mobile, and buy them inside DMs, group chats, server channels or the Nitro page.
- Open the DM, group chat or channel where you want to send the gift.
- Select the gift icon to the right of the text box.
- Pick the gift you want and select Next.
- Review it and select Buy Gift. If you don't have a payment method saved, you'll need to add one first.
One exception on desktop and browser: you can't buy Nitro Basic as a gift through DMs, group chats or server channels. Use the Nitro page instead, which you'll find through the app icon in the upper-left of your DM list, or in User Settings.

Customising with a card design, a personal note, a soundboard effect and emoji confetti only works in DMs on desktop or browser. On mobile you can choose a gift card style in DMs, group chats and channels, but a custom message only works in DMs.
Revoking an unclaimed gift link
Unclaimed gifts sit in User Settings, under Gift Inventory. From there you can revoke a gift link and generate a new one, which is your safety net if you've pasted a link in the wrong place. Once a gift is claimed it disappears from Gift Inventory, and there's nothing left to revoke.
How to claim a Nitro gift
Inside Discord, press Open gift on the gift in the DM or server, then Accept gift. If you've been sent a link from outside Discord:
- Click the gift link.
- Log in, or register if you don't have an account.
- Check you're on the right account.
- Press I accept. You'll land on your Subscriptions tab.
Step 3 matters more than it looks. If you claim on the wrong account, Discord can't give you another code or transfer the gift. If a gift has already gone, you'll see a grayed-out Claimed button in Discord, or a message saying This gift has already been claimed in the browser.
When your friend already has Nitro
If the person you're gifting already has an active Nitro subscription, or the gift is a different plan from theirs, it's added as Account Credit. They can see it under User Settings, then Subscriptions. The rules are strict:
- Credit only works on desktop or browser subscriptions, not ones billed through Google Play or the iOS App Store.
- It only kicks in when their current subscription expires or is removed and they activate the matching subscription.
- Discord's own example: a 9.99 Nitro Monthly Credit needs a 9.99 Nitro Monthly subscription to apply.
So if your friend pays for Nitro through their phone's app store, ask before you gift. They'd need to end that plan first, and my guide on cancelling Discord Nitro covers each device.

Refunds, pricing and other ways to gift
- Refunds: support can't refund a claimed gift. Discord's standard refund policy applies only to unclaimed gifts, and gifts bought on iOS are refunded through Apple.
- Pricing: some gifts can be paid in local currency, but the price stays equivalent to the US dollar price.
- Amazon: Nitro digital gift cards on Amazon.com are available only in the United States and the EU, for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months of Nitro, not Nitro Basic. The code arrives by email and in Your Games Library, and you can apply it through Discord or send it on.
- Bulk Gifting: this is an experiment on desktop and isn't widely available. If you have it, you can choose several friends and send Nitro gifts to all of them at once.
My advice before you buy
Send gifts in a DM, never a busy channel, and check Gift Inventory if you're not sure a link reached the right person. If your friend already subscribes, ask how they pay, because credit doesn't work on app-store plans. And if you're buying for someone who mostly chats and rarely needs extras, they may be happy with what Discord gives everyone for free.
