Yes, Discord is free. You can create an account, join and run servers, send messages, make voice and video calls and share your screen without Nitro. Nitro is optional and mainly adds bigger uploads, longer messages, more servers and higher streaming quality.
Discord started with gamers, but it's now used for communities, courses, memberships and creator groups too. If you're thinking about starting a community for your business, the good news is that the core of Discord is free to use.
What free Discord includes
Discord's own support centre lists the limits for a standard account. On free Discord you get:
- Up to 100 servers you can be a member of.
- Up to 1,000 friends.
- Messages up to 2,000 characters.
- Group DMs with up to 10 people.
- Screen sharing in DMs at 720p and 30 frames per second.
- Voice channels with video for up to 25 people, and screen sharing without video for up to 50.
Free Discord vs Nitro
| Feature | Free | Nitro Basic | Nitro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Servers you can join | 100 | 100 | 200 |
| Message length | 2,000 characters | 2,000 characters | 4,000 characters |
| Custom emoji anywhere | No | Yes | Yes |
| HD streaming | No | No | Yes |
| Custom profiles | No | No | Yes |
Nitro Basic is the smaller add-on, and Nitro is the full version. Both are optional.
The upload limit is a moving target
This is the catch most people don't know. File upload limits on free Discord aren't fixed right now. Discord's File Attachments FAQ, updated in September 2026, says the maximum file upload for people without Nitro is 20MB, and that Discord is currently experimenting with file upload limits, so some users can upload larger files.
Its older Account Caps table still shows 10MB for a standard account. So if a friend says they can send bigger files than you, you're not imagining it. Check what your own account allows by trying a test upload before you plan to share large files.
There's a second route for communities: Server Boosting. Discord says boosted servers get higher upload limits for all members, rising with the server's boost level. That's useful if you run a community where people share videos or design files.
Nitro Basic and Nitro in plain English
If you're wondering what you'd be missing, Discord's Nitro page splits it in two. Nitro Basic adds custom emoji anywhere, bigger uploads and custom app icons. Full Nitro adds custom profiles, HD video streaming, bigger uploads again, longer messages of up to 4,000 characters, the ability to join up to 200 servers and two server boosts. Mostly, that's personalisation and quality. You don't need any of it to chat, call or run a community.
A limit to know if your community grows
Discord's caps also include one that only shows up at scale. For servers with more than 2,500 members, Discord doesn't send mobile push notifications for every message. If you're planning a big community, use announcement channels and role mentions for the posts you need people to see, rather than relying on everyone getting a notification.
Running a free Discord server for your business
A free server gives you a lot of room. Discord's caps show up to 500 channels, 250 roles and 50 emoji slots on a standard server, with audit log entries kept for 45 days so you can see what moderators have changed.
- Create a server from the plus button in the left-hand sidebar.
- Set up a welcome channel and a rules channel first.
- Create roles for members, moderators and anyone you want to give extra access.
- Add a few focused text channels rather than dozens of empty ones.
- Invite your first members personally and post every day for the first fortnight.
Once you're set up, a couple of good bots make moderation much easier. My guide to the best Discord bots covers the useful ones, and this explainer on the Discord server limit goes deeper on how many servers you can join.
Is Discord safe for a business community?
Discord gives server owners a lot of control: roles, permissions, an audit log and the ability to remove or block people. That makes it workable for a members-only course group or a client community, as long as someone keeps an eye on it. Write clear rules, give at least one other person moderator access and check new member settings so spam accounts don't get straight in.
Threads help too. Discord's caps show threads archive after 3 days by default, which keeps busy channels tidy without you deleting anything.

Who free Discord suits
Free Discord suits community builders, course creators and small businesses who want a live chat space with voice rooms and screen sharing, without signing up to another platform. It's also popular with younger audiences, so it can work well if that's who you're trying to reach.
It suits you less if your audience isn't comfortable with chat apps, or if you need to share lots of large files without boosting your server.
My verdict: Discord is free, and the free version is enough to run a lively community. Nitro is a nice extra for heavy users, not a requirement. Just test your upload limit before you rely on it, because Discord is still adjusting it.
