A transparent background maker removes or clears the background of an image so it can sit on any colour, which is what you need for logos, signatures and product cut-outs. Most work in a browser and many are free for basic use. The file format you save in matters as much as the tool. Ten tools follow, in no particular order.
Transparent images are one of those small jobs that'll come up again and again in a small business: a logo for a slide deck, a signature for a document, a product shot for a listing or a headshot for a website header.
The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If you'd prefer a full background remover rather than a transparency tool, my roundup of background removers compares the bigger names.
Transparent background makers at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free tool, a free version or a free tier. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, even where there's a try-free button, so check the provider's own page before you sign up.

Save it in the right format, or the transparency disappears
The most common mistake isn't the cut-out, it's the save. The image format guide on MDN Web Docs, Mozilla's developer reference, says PNG is preferred over JPEG when transparency is needed, and that WebP and AVIF also support transparency with better compression, though browser support for them is more limited.
So export your finished image as a PNG for the widest support, or WebP if you know where it's going. If your logo suddenly has a white box around it on a coloured page, the file has almost certainly been saved or converted as a JPEG somewhere along the way.
Automatic removal or a magic wand?
- Automatic AI removal works best on people, products and anything with a clear subject.
- Magic wand tools work best on logos and graphics with one flat background colour.
- Manual erasers fix the edges, hair and fine details that automatic tools miss.
Five steps to a clean transparent image
- Start with the largest, sharpest version of the image you have.
- Pick automatic removal for photos, or a magic wand for flat colours.
- Zoom in and clean up the edges.
- Export as PNG, or WebP if you know the platform supports it.
- Test it on a dark and a light background before you use it.
That last test catches most problems: stray edge pixels show up on a dark background, and missed shadows show up on a light one. It's quicker to fix them now than after you've uploaded the file everywhere.
Do you make background removal, photo editing or design tools? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on transparent background makers
Use an automatic tool for photos and a magic wand tool for flat logos, then always zoom in on the edges before you export, because that's where cut-outs go wrong. Save as PNG unless you're sure WebP is supported where the image is going.
Test every transparent file on a dark and a light background before it goes on a website or slide. If you're working in Canva, my step-by-step guide to making a transparent background in Canva shows the built-in route.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free transparent background maker?
It depends on the image: automatic tools suit photos, while magic wand tools suit flat logos and graphics, so there isn't one tool that's right for every job.
Are transparent background makers free?
Many tools here name a free tool or free use on their page, so check the free plan column for each one.
Which file format keeps a transparent background?
MDN says PNG is preferred over JPEG when transparency is needed, and WebP and AVIF also support transparency.
Why does my transparent logo show a white box?
The file has usually been saved or converted as a JPEG. Export it again as a PNG.
Can I make a signature transparent?
Yes. Some tools here have a transparent signature option built for exactly that job.
What is a PNG maker?
It's a tool that turns an image, often a JPG, into a PNG, and it'll usually make the background transparent at the same time.
