To make a transparent background in Canva, set the page background to white or delete it, choose Share, then Download, pick PNG and turn on the Transparent background toggle. Canva's help says this is available on Canva Pro, Teams, Business and the Education and Nonprofits versions.
You've made a logo in Canva, saved it, dropped it onto your website, and there it sits inside a white rectangle. Every small business owner I know has done this at least once. The cause is nearly always the export settings, not the design.
Canva does let you save a see-through file, but it's a specific switch in the download panel and it comes with a few conditions. Here's what Canva's help centre says.
Downloading a Canva design with a transparent background
These are the steps from Canva's help article:
- Set the page background to white, or delete the background. To delete it, select the background and click the trash icon on the toolbar above the editor.
- Select Share, then Download.
- Choose PNG as the file type.
- Set the size and quality you want.
- Turn on the Transparent background toggle.
- Click Download.
New designs start with a white background by default, which is why step one matters. If the page still has a coloured fill, a photo or a big shape sitting behind your artwork, Canva has nothing to make see-through.
Who can use Canva's transparent background download
Canva's help says this feature is only available on Canva Pro, Canva Teams, Canva Business, and the Education and Nonprofits versions. If you can't see the toggle and you're on the free version, that's almost certainly why.
Two more limits are worth knowing. Only PNG supports a transparent background, so choosing JPG or PDF won't give you one. And Canva's help says downloading Canva Docs with a transparent background is not possible.
Getting a transparent background on a photo in Canva
A photo is different from a logo, because the background is part of the picture rather than a page colour. Canva's help says to use the background remover first. Select the photo, choose BG Remover from the toolbar, wait for it to process, and then follow the download steps above.
The background remover has limits of its own. Per Canva's help, photos need to be under 9MB and it isn't available for vector images. I've covered the whole tool, including the brushes for tidying edges, in my guide to removing a background in Canva.
Downloading several pages with a transparent background in Canva
If your design has more than one page, say a set of logo variations, Canva's download panel lets you choose All, This Page or Custom before you click Download. Choose All to get the lot in one go, or This Page when you only need the one.
There's also a Save download settings switch. Turning it on keeps your choices, so you don't have to re-tick the transparent background toggle every time you export. For anyone making a batch of logos or stickers, that's a handy time-saver.
Where a transparent Canva PNG earns its place for a small business
- Your logo on a website header, where the page colour shows through behind it.
- A watermark or badge you drop over photos.
- Stickers, labels and packaging mock-ups that sit on different coloured backgrounds.
- Social graphics where you layer a cut-out over a brand colour in another design.
- Slides and videos where a logo needs to sit on top of footage.
If you'd like a view on whether Canva is the right tool for your branding work, my Canva review sets out who it suits. And if your cut-outs are headed for image boards, my walkthrough on making a collage on Pinterest shows one way to use them.

Picking the right Canva file type when transparency matters
It's tempting to download everything as a PNG just in case, but Canva's help says only PNG supports a transparent background, so the choice is really about what you're making. A logo for a website header wants a PNG. A flyer for printing at the shop probably doesn't, because a flyer is meant to have a background.
Keep a master copy of the original design in your Canva account too. A transparent PNG is a finished file, so if you later want a new colour or a different layout, you'll want to edit the design and export again rather than start from the PNG.
If your Canva download still has a background
Canva's help names the usual culprit: the background wasn't deleted or set to white before you downloaded. Work through these in order:
- Click the page background and check whether it holds a colour, photo or graphic. Delete it with the trash icon or set it to white.
- Look for a large shape or frame covering the page and remove it if it isn't part of the artwork.
- Make sure PNG is selected, since no other file type keeps transparency.
- Confirm the Transparent background toggle is on, then download again.
If the toggle is greyed out or missing, Canva's help says check three things: your version, whether you've selected PNG, and whether you're working in Canva Docs.
Checking a transparent Canva PNG before you use it
Open the downloaded file on a coloured background, not on a white page. Plenty of image viewers show transparent areas as white or as a chequered pattern, so the quickest honest test is to place it over a bright colour in a new design or on your website and look at the edges. If you see a pale halo, go back and tidy the original with the Erase and Restore brushes.
