To find old Facebook friends, search their name, open the People results and add filters for city, education, work or mutual friends. You can also check People You May Know or upload your contacts. If there's no Add friend button, their privacy settings are the usual reason.
Everyone has a name they've lost track of: the school friend who moved away, the first colleague who made work fun, the neighbour you swapped Christmas cards with. If you run a small business or a side project, those old connections can be handy too, because people who already know you tend to be the first to cheer you on.
I've pulled this together from Facebook's own help pages, so every step below matches what the platform says. There are three routes: searching by name, narrowing the search with filters, and letting Facebook suggest people. I'll take them one at a time, starting with the simplest.
Searching for an old friend by name on Facebook
The help centre says you can find friends through search and through People You May Know suggestions. Search is the quickest place to start. On a computer, the steps are:
- Log into your Facebook account.
- Click the search bar in the top left of the screen.
- Type your old friend's name and click Search.
- When you spot the right person, click Add friend next to their profile picture.
On the phone app, tap Search in the top right of Facebook, type the name, tap Search, then tap Add friend next to their name. Facebook adds a small warning here: some people won't show an Add friend button at all, depending on their privacy settings. That isn't a glitch. It means they've chosen to limit who can send them requests.
Using Facebook search filters to narrow down old friends
A common name can bring back pages of results. Facebook's help page for this problem suggests filtering by city, education, work and mutual friends. Here's how, on a computer:
- Click Search Facebook in the top left and enter the name, then press Enter.
- Click People in the left menu.
- Choose the filters you want: city, education, work or mutual friends.
On the phone app the filters sit behind a Filters button in the top right once you've tapped People, and the options are City, Education, Work and Friends of Friends. You can use as many filters as you like. Facebook also says that depending on the filters you pick, you may need to enter more of your friend's details.
For school friends, the education filter is the one I'd try first. For a former colleague, try the work filter with the old company name. If you remember a friend of theirs you're still connected to, the mutual friends filter often cuts the list to a handful of people.
Why an old Facebook friend might not appear in your search
Facebook lists a few reasons that apply to old friends in particular:
- If you've blocked them, or they've blocked you, you won't see their profile at all.
- If you search by network, such as a school or workplace, some people won't show up because of their privacy settings for the About section of their profile.
- Their name may have changed, so try a maiden name, a nickname or a shortened version.
The third point is common sense rather than something Facebook states, but it's a very common reason old friends go missing. If a straight name search fails, try a different spelling before you give up.
Letting People You May Know suggest old friends
Facebook describes People You May Know as a list of people you might want to be friends with because you have things in common, such as a mutual friend, school or workplace. You can send a friend request to anyone on the list by selecting Add Friend. If a suggestion isn't useful, you can remove it and see fewer like it.
This is surprisingly good for rediscovering old contacts, because it leans on the same shared schools and workplaces you'd search for by hand. If you want to know how it decides, my explainer on adding friends on Facebook through search and suggestions covers the everyday side of it.
Finding old Facebook friends by uploading your contacts
There's a fourth route that works well if you still have an old phone book or email contacts. Facebook says you can upload contacts from your mobile device or your Google account to improve friend suggestions. On the phone app, Facebook's steps are:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Tap Menu in the top left of Facebook.
- Tap Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Tap Meta Account, then Your information and permissions.
- Tap Upload contacts and choose your Facebook profile.
- Switch on the toggle next to Contacts and tap Continue.
Once contact uploading is on, Facebook uploads your contacts automatically. Facebook also points out that turning off contact access in your phone's own settings doesn't delete what was already uploaded. To delete uploaded contacts, use the settings inside the Facebook app. Because this shares address-book details, I'd only switch it on if you're comfortable with that, and you can turn it off again later.
What to know before sending requests to old Facebook friends
A couple of Facebook limits are worth knowing so your requests don't quietly disappear:
| Situation | What Facebook says |
|---|---|
| Lots of requests waiting | You can have up to 1,000 sent requests waiting for a response. If you send more, the oldest request will be deleted. |
| No Add friend button | Some people don't show one, depending on their privacy settings. |
| Can't add someone | Facebook has a separate help page listing the reasons a request can't be sent. |
My own habit is to send a short message with the request when it's someone I haven't spoken to for years. A line like 'It's Lilach from school, it's been ages' avoids the awkward moment where they don't recognise the name. Facebook doesn't require this, it's just a courtesy, and it makes a request far more likely to be accepted.
Old Facebook friends for small business owners and creators
If you're building a business or a creator profile, reconnecting with old contacts is a gentle way to widen your circle without any pressure. Keep it personal first. People who knew you years ago usually care more about you than about what you sell, and the relationship tends to repay itself naturally.
If you're hunting for old posts or photos that mention someone, my walkthrough on finding archived Facebook posts might help you track down the name you're missing.
If you still can't find your old Facebook friend
- Check the spelling, then try a nickname, a shortened name or a former surname.
- Add a filter for the city, school or workplace you remember.
- Look through the friends lists of people you both know, since Facebook says people can see mutual friends when they visit a profile.
- Check whether you've blocked them in the past by reviewing your blocked list in Settings.
- If they really aren't there, they may have a different account or no account. In that case, try another route such as an email or a mutual friend.

Frequently asked questions
What's the easiest way to find old friends on Facebook?
Type their name into the Facebook search bar, open the People results and add filters such as city, education or work. Facebook's help page says these filters help when a name is common.

Does Facebook suggest old friends automatically?
People You May Know suggests people who share something with you, like a mutual friend, school or workplace. Facebook says you can remove suggestions you don't want.
