Biology Apps (2026): 10 Apps for Revision and Nature

A biology app helps you learn or revise biology with lessons, quizzes and flashcards, or gets you outside identifying real plants and animals. Some target a specific exam such as AP, AQA GCSE or CLEP, while others build general understanding. Ten apps follow, in no particular order.

Biology rewards two habits: regular recall of a lot of vocabulary, and real understanding of how systems work. Most apps lean one way or the other, so it helps to know which gap you're filling before you download anything.

The apps below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the app's own App Store listing, read this week. If homework is the sore point, my guide to making biology homework less stressful has practical tips.

Biology apps at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each app's own App Store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free tool, a free version or a free tier. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, even where there's a try-free button, so check the provider's own page before you sign up.

  • You're sitting AQA GCSE: BioQuiz - AQA GCSE Biology.
  • You want college credit by exam: College4Less: Biology.
  • You want real biology outdoors: iNaturalist.
  • You're exploring nature with children: Seek by iNaturalist.

Biology exams still need a calculator

It's easy to think of biology as a words subject, but exam papers include data, rates and simple statistics. College Board's calculator policy lists a four-function calculator with square root, or a scientific nongraphing calculator, for AP Biology.

It also says that for the 2027 AP Biology exams, handheld calculators with storage capabilities, such as graphing calculators, aren't allowed. Practise data questions with the calculator type you'll be allowed, and use apps for the content.

Recall, understanding and fieldwork

  • Recall: quiz and flashcard apps help with the heavy vocabulary of cells, genetics and physiology.
  • Understanding: tutor-style apps explain mechanisms and evidence, which helps with longer exam answers.
  • Fieldwork: nature apps turn a walk into practice at observing, classifying and recording living things.

A weekly biology revision plan

  1. Two short quiz sessions on the topic you covered in class.
  2. One session explaining a process, such as respiration or protein synthesis, out loud or on paper.
  3. One set of past paper data questions with your exam calculator.
  4. One walk where you identify and record three living things.

That mix covers the three things biology papers test: knowing the words, explaining the process and handling data. If one of the three keeps slipping, swap a quiz session for more of the weak one, and keep going until it stops being the part you dread. Little and often wins in this subject, because so much of it builds on the topic before.

Do you make biology, science or study apps? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on biology apps

Choose one app that matches your exam board or course and one that builds understanding, then add a nature app if you like learning outside. Short, regular quiz sessions beat a single long cram before a test.

Use the apps for content, but practise data questions with your exam calculator. For prompts that turn your notes into practice questions, my guide to ChatGPT prompts for studying and revision is a handy extra.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best app to learn biology?

It depends on your course: exam-board apps suit revision, while tutor-style apps suit learning new topics.

Are there free biology apps?

Yes, several apps here name free content or a free, nonprofit service on their listing, so check the free plan column.

Is there a biology app for AQA GCSE?

Yes. One app here is built around AQA GCSE biology, with hundreds of multiple-choice questions and past paper questions.

Which calculator is allowed in AP Biology?

College Board lists a four-function calculator with square root or a scientific nongraphing calculator, and no graphing calculators for 2027.

Can an app help me identify plants and animals?

Yes. Nature apps let you point your camera at living things to identify them and record what you find.

Can I earn college credit for biology with an app?

An app can help you prepare for the CLEP Biology exam, which is the route to the credit itself.
