Is Splice Free? What Splice Sounds Costs and the Cheapest Way to Try It

No, Splice isn't free. Splice's plans page lists two paid plans, Creator and Sounds, with no free tier; the cheapest way in is the Creator trial offer, $4.99 for the first month, as of October 2026.

Splice is the sample library music producers use for loops, one-shots, presets and MIDI, and it runs on credits. There's one free part worth knowing about, which I'll come to. Here's what the plans cost, how credits work and what happens to your sounds if you stop paying, all from Splice's own plans page, checked as of October 2026.

One quick check first: there's also a video editing app called Splice on the App Store, from Bending Spoons. This page is about Splice the music sample platform at splice.com.

Splice plans and prices

PlanPrice as listedMonthly downloadsBest for
Creator$4.99 for the first month, then a regular price of $19.99 a monthAbout 200Frequent creators
Sounds$12.99 a month, billed yearlyAbout 100Occasional makers

Both plans list full access to Splice's library of 3M+ sounds. Creator adds 1,000+ presets and Rare Finds. Every plan includes the desktop and mobile apps, DAW plugins, presets for Serum and Vital, new packs every week and curated collections.

How Splice credits work

Splice's FAQ explains it simply. You use credits to download samples, loops, one-shots, presets and MIDI. Every sample costs one credit, while MIDI patterns and presets use up to three credits each.

  • Unused credits roll over to the next month automatically.
  • Everything you download is yours to keep, even if you cancel.
  • Splice says its sounds are royalty free and cleared for commercial use.
  • If you upgrade, you're charged the new price straight away, your credits refill and your billing date resets.

The free part: auditioning sounds with Bridge

This is the detail most people don't know. Splice comes with Bridge, a utility that lets you audition sounds in the context of your own project without using credits. So you can hear a loop against your track before you spend anything on it. Splice says Bridge and its other plugins, such as Astra and Beatmaker, come in VST3 or AU format.

Splice also works with any DAW, and it lists deeper in-DAW integrations with Pro Tools 2025.6+, Studio One 7+ and Ableton Live 12.3, which was in beta when I checked.

Splice INSTRUMENT and rent-to-own plugins

Splice sells more than samples. Splice INSTRUMENT is a sample-based virtual instrument you load as a plugin in your DAW, then browse presets and play them on a keyboard, with 2 premium packs added every month. Splice says full access to its premium presets comes with the INSTRUMENT plan and is currently included on Creator and Creator+ plans too.

There's also a rent-to-own programme for well-known plugins, which Splice names as Serum, Arturia V Collection and Spitfire Audio instruments. You pay over time instead of buying outright.

Splice also makes three promises on its plans page that matter if you release music: it pays and credits the artists behind every sound in its catalogue, you own everything you make with Splice, and it says it will never train AI on your work.

What happens if you cancel Splice

Read this before you sign up. When you cancel, your plan stays active until the end of the billing period, and you can keep downloading until then. After that, Splice says your remaining credits expire 28 days after your final billing period ends, so you have that long to resubscribe and reclaim them.

  • You can put your plan on hold for up to two months if you don't want to lose the credits you've built up.
  • After cancelling you can still browse your sample library and re-download samples you've already paid for.
  • Everything you made with Splice sounds stays yours. Splice says no permissions are ever needed.

How to try Splice for the lowest cost

  1. Start the Creator trial offer at $4.99 for the first month.
  2. Install the Splice desktop app and Bridge before you download anything.
  3. Use Bridge to audition sounds against your track, so you only spend credits on what fits.
  4. Download the sounds you want; they're yours to keep.
  5. Before the first month ends, decide whether to stay on Creator, switch to Sounds or put the plan on hold.

Is Splice worth paying for?

If you make beats or tracks every week, Splice saves hours of digging for sounds, and the roll-over credits mean a quiet month isn't wasted. If you only make music now and then, Sounds billed yearly is the cheaper monthly rate. And if you're a creator who just needs background tracks for videos, a music library is probably a better fit than a sample library.

My verdict: is Splice free?

No. There's no free Splice plan, but you can audition sounds free with Bridge, and as of October 2026 the Creator trial was $4.99 for the first month before its regular price of $19.99 a month. Try it for a month, download what you need and keep it, then decide whether the credits are worth it for how often you make music.
